OLA, PALMA SOLA! I’m writing these words on August 21st, and I realize as I do so that I’m now in my third month with you as your transitional pastor. I’ve gotten to know quite a few of you, and shared a meal with several of you. I’ve served communion twice, once by intinction and once in the traditional manner. I’ve conducted a Celebration of Life service. I’ve moderated three Session meetings, attended a Deacon’s meeting and several meetings of teams and committees. I’ve met with the Book Club, the Men’s Ministry, and the Prayer Group. I’m learning about all of the programs, all of the activities, all of the groups that utilize the facilities at Palma Sola Presbyterian Church. I know now what the Creative Arts Academy does, and what the BUMS are. I’ve seen the Scouts (Cubs, Boys, and Girls) coming and going. I rejoice that this church hosts the Samaritan Counseling Center for Bradenton. That the West Manatee Fire and Rescue folks share our office space is a blessing. I’ve come to value the church staff. Sue is a blessing and a joy to work with in the office. Our worship leadership team of Elenita, Mark, Billy, John, and Tony, are wonderful! We’ve been singing some old favorite hymns. Some of them are old favorites of mine that nobody else knows. Some are like “Amazing Grace”, “Rock of Ages”, and “Just a Closer Walk With Thee”. We’ve been singing praise songs. Mark and Elenita have played beautiful classical music for offertory, prelude, and postlude. I am preaching on the New Testament Epistles from the Lectionary for the Christian Year this summer. Starting in October, I’ll be teaching a series on the Old Testament prophets on Wednesdays. I call it Profiles of the Prophets: From Amos to Zephaniah. We will look at the life and times and ministry as well as the words of the prophets. I am enjoying my ministry among you. I have found this to be a warm, welcoming church. September 2019 Page 2 Polly and I are enjoying living on an island for the first time in our 51 years of marriage. I enjoy seeing the water, the birds, the boats, the jet skis, the paddleboards, the kayaks, and especially the horses! As I drive the Causeway in the morning and in the afternoon, there is always something to see. A couple of mornings I’ve seen a woman with about half a dozen dogs on the causeway. The dogs swim and play in the water, and she gives them hand signals to come to her, or to go away. They are big dogs, like Labradors or German Shepherds, and they romp and splash and play, but they always respond to the woman’s signals. I said in a sermon recently that I wish I could be as faithful and obedient to my Master as a good dog is. I told the story of watching a woman walking two dogs, one of which was on a leash, and fighting and pulling and tugging. The other was walking free and easy, totally obedient and faithful to its owner. The dogs on the causeway are not on leashes. They are free to run off if they choose, or to chase a car, or a jet ski. But you can tell that they love the one to whom they belong, and that even when they are playing, they are watching and listening for her commands. May we always be as attentive to the one to whom we belong. Blessings, Ted Land
September 2019 Page 3 July 22, 2019 My dear Palma Solans! Greetings in the Lord! I do apologize for taking so long to send out a note thanking you for all your wonderful gifts to us on my retirement. I literally slept for 10 days after retiring (I was flat worn out!) and then had to get the house ready to be listed and shown. It went on the market on June 28th and we got a cash offer for close to the asking price 2 weeks later on July 12th-God has been so good to us! The couple who’s purchasing our condo wants to move in August 7th. Because the move is so quick, I went to Greenville last week to find a temporary place to live. We’ll rent a small furnished apartment for the first few months at the address below: 427 Crestmont Way Greenville, SC 29615 This apartment is 2 minutes off of I-85 about half-way between Atlanta and Charlotte. If any of you are heading up that way, just give us a holler; we’d love to see you. Of course, I’ll notify you when I have our permanent address. Now that you have that information, I must express our deepest gratitude for your generosity in the wonderful financial gift you sent us off with-not to mention the sweet, tear-inducing cards; the thoughtful individual gifts and gift cards, and MOST OF ALL, all the love you’ve poured out on me and my family since our lives connected with yours in August 2000. I can’t really believe how the Lord blessed me/us by allowing me to serve as your pastor not once, but twice! This happens so rarely in ministry that I know the Lord called me to you from the beginning and bound our spirits together in a deep commitment in Jesus Christ. Besides all of the temporal gifts you’ve bestowed on us, the greatest gift is this: YOUR PATIENT, JOYFUL, FORGIVING LOVE IN CHRIST! May the Lord continue to bless you, guide you, keep you and provide for all your needs. In the Lord’s grace and peace, Ron and Indy

Page 5 September 2019 Outreach Ministry Team Update During the summer, Palma Sola focused on supporting the critical need for food security in Manatee County. Through our Outreach Offering and non-perishable food drive for The Food Bank in June, July and August we were able to donate hundreds of dollars and hundreds of pounds of food for those in need. Through our pocket change collection for F.E.L.T., school children will take home weekend backpacks of food. Teams were also out in the community serving food at Our Daily Bread and Meals on Wheels. These events helped PSPC stay connected with each other and the community during the long, hot summer months. The Outreach Team has been busy planning a variety of exciting ways Palma Sola can reach out in love and service in the coming months! Mark your calendars and be on the lookout for more information about these events: SEPTEMBER: RALLY DAY IS COMING!!! Join us on Sunday, September 8th from 8:30-10 am as we “RALLY” around the Lord! Gather in Fellowship Hall for a potluck breakfast and browse our Ministry and Mission Fair to see all the wonderful opportunities there are to reach out to others through Palma Sola. Visit with our mission partners and enter a drawing to win fun prizes. Sign up in the Narthex or contact Sue in the church office by 9/5. Hope to see you there! Our Palma Sola DOES It! project for September is collecting new and gently used children’s picture books for Reach Out and Read. Reach Out and Read is a school readiness program that incorporates books into pediatric care. Pediatricians serving primarily low-income communities provide and distribute developmentally appropriate books for children ages 6 month to 5 years old and advise parents about the importance of reading aloud. Bins will be in the Narthex through 9/29. Our Outreach Offering for September will go to Bible Mission USA. Founded by Dr. Paul Eckel, this ministry is dedicated to spreading God’s Word by providing free Bibles and religious materials with all who are in need. Use the envelopes found in the pews and make your check out to PSPC, memo line “Bible Mission USA.” As part of our Elderly Connection and Support Ministry we are very excited to present The ABC of Dementia program on Saturday, September 14th from 9:30-11:30 am in the Sanctuary. Certified Dementia Practitioner Debbie Selsavage will speak on the philosophy and techniques of person-centered compassionate care, using humor, empathy and personal experience as a care-giver for her husband Albert. The program is free and open to the public. By signing up to attend, you will also help Palma Sola become a certified “Dementia Friendly” congregation which will allow us to further minister to those members and families affected by dementia and other age related illnesses. Sign up in the Narthex or contact Sue in the church office by 9/12.
Page 7 September 2019 Outreach Ministry Team Update Habitat for Humanity is celebrating its 25th year in Manatee County. As part of this milestone event, Palma Sola is proud to partner with Habitat and the Interfaith Build and donate $5,000 toward the construction of the 135th house built by Manatee Habitat. Building will start in early September and be completed by June 2020. An onsite groundbreaking at 2207 11th St. West in downtown Bradenton is scheduled for Thursday, September 12th at noon, and all faith partners – that’s you! - are invited to attend. This is the Harris family who has been qualified for this home. More information about volunteer opportunities that will be available for us will be shared in the months ahead. This is an exciting way to be out in the community, sharing the love of Christ with others! Get a L.I.F.E.!!! In response to requests for more opportunities to connect with members of the congregation as well as to include friends to join us, the Outreach Team is happy to organize four new L.I.F.E. (Living In Faith Everyday) Groups for the fall. L.I.F.E. Groups are designed to offer informal gatherings where people of faith can socialize with others in a common interest. New groups being organized are: Table for L.I.F.E. (dinner group); Active L.I.F.E. (recreation group); Single L.I.F.E. (separate group outings for men and separate group outings for women); and the Get Up and Get Out in L.I.F.E. group (movies, game nights, holiday events, etc.). Visit the table at Rally Day to sign-up and to join together for a free kick-off dinner on Saturday, September 28th at 5:30 pm in Fellowship Hall where you will hear more and meet and plan with your group. The cart for non-perishable food donations for Our Daily Bread is back and has a new look! Fill the cart with pasta, rice, cereal, canned food/drinks and more to help provide food for those in need. We continue to collect Campbell’s Soup labels and Box Tops for Education to donate to Palma Sola Elementary School. See the display and collection box in the Narthex for specific information. Pocket Change for Missions envelopes are always available in the pews with proceeds benefitting F.E.L.T. (Feeding Empty Little Tummies). OCTOBER: We will be continuing our partnership with Palma Sola Elementary School for the fourth year! In August we collected needed items for the clinic and classroom through our Palma Sola DOES It. Our beloved Pen Pal program with the 2nd grade students will kick-off in October as well as opportunities to sign up to support the school through blessing dinners for teachers, Parent/Teacher Conference night treats, and test proctoring in the fall and spring. Rise Against Hunger Meal Packing Event - Saturday, October 12th 9:30-11:30 am in Fellowship Hall – Invite your friends and family to help pack over 10,000 meals to help fight hunger all over the world. See the attached information for more details about Rise Against Hunger and how you can be involved. The Bradenton Ukulele Movement (BUMS) will be leading a jam session/sing along on October 22nd at 6:30 pm in Fellowship Hall. Join member Janice Saylor and her group for an evening of fellowship and fun with others in the community. No experience necessary and song books provided. You won’t want to miss it!
Page 8 September 2019 Coming Soon… Meal Packing Event in Fellowship Hall Saturday, October 12th , 9:30-11:30 am Mark your calendars and please come join us! How many people are needed? Approximately 60 people will be needed – 52 to pack meals from 9:30-11:30; 4 to help set up from 8:00-9:30; and 4 more to help take down from 11:30 until done. Friends, family members, and children over 5 (accompanied by an adult) are all welcome! What is Rise Against Hunger, who do they serve, and what kind of meals are packed? We are partnering with the Tampa branch of Rise Against Hunger, a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide food to those most in need around the globe. They are experienced in organizing and directing meal packing events like ours, so we’re in good hands. Both sitting and standing jobs will be available. In two hours, in a fun and educational assembly-line process, we’ll pack thousands of life-giving soy and rice meals. Rise Against Hunger will send them to one of their international partners, who will then distribute the meals to those in need. Our church will later learn where our meals were sent and how many people could be fed. Why are we participating? This event gives us the opportunity to answer God’s call to serve those less fortunate than we are. By lending a hand to feed the hungry, we show our love and concern. Sign-up sheets will be at Rally Day and in the Narthex.
Page 9 September 2019 Mission Update... We were thrilled to have the Norton’s, our sponsored missionaries in Guatemala, in worship with us in May. In July, Palma Sola sent support in the amount of $3,134: $2,250 designated from our mission budget and $884 from our special collection. Below is an update from them since their visit: Dear Palma Sola Family, Hello! Hope this finds everyone doing well. We so enjoyed seeing so many of you in May. We have had a crazy couple of months. We found out that our rental contract was not being renewed so we began searching for another house to rent. It is extremely hard to find something big enough for our family and ministry within our budget! But we finally found a house to rent and have moved in and are getting settled. It is in a safe neighborhood of only 7 houses and there is a park right next door for the kids to play in. We need to buy screens to keep the bugs out and the kids in but besides that it is great! We were excited to spend a day with a team from Jacksonville. They treated one of the orphanages that we work with a day of fun. We took all 9 special needs girls to a giant ball pit play area. We ended the afternoon with an ice cream treat at the food court! The team did a great job playing with the girls and sharing the love of Jesus with them! It is so good for the girls to get out and experience different things. All the girls and the team had a great time! Prayer requests: *Lacy has turned in her visa application to join her fiance in England. Please pray for God's perfect timing and for peace for her while she waits. Also, she was recently in a car accident. She is fine, but is still a little unnerved by the whole event, from dealing with insurance to purchasing another car. It has been very difficult for Carl and me not to be there with her during this time. *Financially, we still do not have the monthly support that we need. We are trusting God to supply our needs. *Our adoption: we are still waiting to be matched with our newest little one. Thank you so much for your continued support for our family and ministry. We are so appreciative of the generous donation that you all sent to us! Thank you for loving the children in the orphanages of Guatemala! We are so thankful to serve Jesus alongside of you! I am attaching a photo of a picnic our girls had with 4 of the girls from one of the orphanages tonight! Special memories! Blessings, Carl and Lisa
Page 10 September 2019 Summer Session Highlights The Session approved Palma Sola becoming a Certified Dementia-Friendly Congregation by completing a workshop on the philosophy and techniques of person-centered compassionate care. The workshop is scheduled for Saturday, September 14th from 9:30-11:30 am at the church. All are encouraged to sign up for this timely workshop. Approved the annual Per-capita on September 15th for the support of our Presbytery, Synod and Denomination. Approved designating two additional rooms beginning this Fall for the addition of Girl Cubs to the Scouting program supported by the church. On the recommendation of the Outreach Team, approved joining the Faith Build planned by Habitat for Humanity this Fall. Several churches will combine to construct a Habitat House in the community, and there will be ample opportunities for volunteers of all ages. The Communications Team reported that the church website (pspchurch.org) has been refurbished, up-dated and is operating smoothly. The congregation is invited to sign-on and check it out. Suggestions for further improvement are solicited. A Stewardship Team has been formed and begun work. Consecration Sunday, followed by a Congregational Luncheon, has been set for November 17th. All Teams are beginning to work on their new preliminary operating budgets. Session is grappling with how to manage the cleaning and maintenance of our campus facilities while the Chair of Property & Grounds is recovering from health issues. It appears that this work should be restructured with an expanded Team put in place. Suggestions are solicited. Pastor Ted will present a study on Profiles of the Prophets, beginning on Wednesday, October 2nd . He will offer the study at both an afternoon and an evening session. The Session-appointed team to propose a slate of nominees to serve on the Pastor Nominating Committee has completed its work, and a slate of nominees will be proposed for congregation election as soon as a meeting of the congregation can be scheduled. Thank you to all members who suggested individuals to serve on this committee.
Page 11 September 2019 Fall’s Wednesday Classes: ‘PROFILES OF THE PROPHETS’ Starting October 2nd, Transitional Pastor Ted Land will teach a Bible Study looking at the lives, ministry, and messages of the Old Testament prophets from Amos to Zephiah. The text book will be the Old Testament, New International Version. Each session will stand alone, and a synopsis of each will be made available. Pastor Land extensively studied the Old Testament prophets while completing his Doctor of Ministry degree at Columbia Seminary. He received the only doctorate on the Old Testament ever given in Columbia. He studied under Old Testament scholars, A. B. Rhodes and John Salmon, at Louisville Seminary, and James Newsome and Walter Bruggemann at Columbia. Plan to participate, and bring your friends to this exciting opportunity to learn about the key figures of the Old Testament. Classes will be held in the Parlor on Wednesdays at 1:30pm and 6:15pm. Starting Sunday, September 15th, from 9:00—9:45 am, in the church parlor, I’ll be leading weekly discussions on Christian Living in Today’s World. Hope you’ll join us!!
