 What is the Cricketers Corner
        Memorial Park?
Having recently been asked this question I thought it was
a great opportunity to include this in our regular column
in the Times.
On Lumley Road behind the new shops on Braidwood
Road is the corner piece of the Tarago Recreation Area
known as the Cricketers Corner Memorial Park. This
Park was officially opened on 25th May 2019 by Henry
and Jack Gundry representing the Veolia Mulwaree Trust
who generously granted the TSAI the funds to develop
this corner of the Rec Area into a beautiful garden with As this park is designed to be a living memorial, families

of the park as follows: “This park is built on the area
of the Tarago Recreation Area known as Cricketer’s
Corner, which was officially opened as part of the Tarago
Centenary of Federation celebrations on 15th April 2001.
At the opening Don Woodhouse paid special tribute to
past Tarago Cricketers and recalled some of their glory
days. A special cricketers bench and plaque was unveiled
by family members of the McAlister and Leahy families
in recognition of these past cricketers and in memory of
Frank McAlister and Jim Leahy. The match was won by
those who returned and is considered to have been the
inaugural annual match of Tarago vs Legends (organised
by Scott Woodhouse of Goulburn complete with the
awarding of the McAlister/Leahy Memorial Cup. On 17th
April 2011 a second bench and plaque was dedicated to
the memory of David Charles Wilkins (Wilko) by his family.
With the deterioration of the original benches a more
permanent memorial was planned by the TSAI committee
and this park is now dedicated to the memory of past
residence, members and friends in the Tarago area.”

Know what your trigger and your escape routes will be

closures can easily block access to first option.
Prepare your home by clearing combustible material
from its immediate surrounds. Mow your lawn, clean your
guttering and trim back vegetation that might be growing
over or near your home. Remove material that can burn
like wood piles, mulch, leaves, door mats and
outdoor furniture. Have a sturdy hose that can reach all
around your house, along with a reliable source of water.
A simple watering can may be a water efficient option for
dealing with small spotfires.

The ASC has decided to start a conversation about the
value of local Shows and the connectivity of our Show

are asking all Shows to come together and acknowledge
the Show movement across NSW and Australia by creating
a No Show Scarecrow initiative to prominently display in
our community from 1-31 October 2020. The colourful

for each other as a reminder that each Show is part of a
bigger picture.
It’s a great community idea that would be a lot of fun to
create and you are all invited to join in and contribute to
the display. Our No Show Scarecrows need to be in place
by 1 October 2020 so members of our Show Society will
get it started. Look out for them and help our No Show
Scarecrows to be as creative and colourful as possible
by adding to it – let your imagination go, who knows we
could end up having a whole heap of scarecrows.
Ideas for some of the things we’ll need to create the No

My wife Lois and I moved to the Tarago district from
Canberra about five years ago. We were inspired to make
a tree change following a visit to a friend who had just
retired to Bowraville, to a spacious rural block with
chickens, alpacas, sheep and lovely views. It took us
six months to find our piece of paradise within one hour
drive of Canberra. As soon as we saw the view at the
back of the humble abode in Lower Boro we knew we had
found our new home. We made the right decision and are
grateful every day to be here.
I was born in the late 50’s in the rural country town of
Elliston, located on Eyre Peninsular, South Australia.
I am the youngest of four children. My family farmed
there until 1962 when we moved to Adelaide. I grew up

There are trillions of pieces of plastic estimated to

It’s that time of the year again. Baby bird season is
well underway. Wildcare is always on the lookout for
new recruits to help rescue and rehabilitate injured
