Moodle for KIPAM Draft for discussion Dr. Sergio Miranda University of Salerno
The Moodle homepage… as is
Examples of custom interfaces
What kind of personalization? • The homepage for unlogged users • The homepage for logged users • Learners • Teachers/Learning Designer • Admins • Responsive interfaces (?) • Course page (index, content, …) • …first: choosing a Moodle theme
The Moodle Theme • The Moodle community keeps many themes available and a wide set of them are free!
The homepage for unlogged users • Layout? Header • Header • Bootstrap based slider Bootstrap based slider • Footer • What to show? • Course catalogue • News Course Catalogue •… • The login… Footer
The login • Where? • Box • Link/Button • Single Sign On (SSO)? • No SSO: all users have to fill in forms to register themselves • Facebook… • Google… • Other Identity Management Systems…
The homepage for logged users • Layout? • Header Header • Navigation bar Navigation bar • Columns 1/2/3 • Footer • What to show and to which kind of users… • Course catalogue and time scheduling Column 1 Column 2 Column 3 • Online exercises • Messages • Notice board where users may share pictures, documents etc. • Calendar • Activities/Progresses Footer • Online colleagues…
Navigation inside courses • People • Content • Activities • Progresses (milestones and awards) • Calendar • Taxonomy or Steps of the learning path
Our proposal to design Moodle interfaces for “50+” users • We would like to: • Keep in mind suggestions from partners • Keep in mind studies on how to make interfaces simpler by reducing the visual “overload” • Select 5 themes and arrange possible layouts • Follow a User-Centred Design by involving partners (KIPAM OR3…) in the definition of the Moodle interface (by means of on-line questionnaires, surveys and tests) • Collecting partners’ feedback on themes and layouts • Releasing a draft version of the KIPAM platform • Collecting partners’ feedback on the draft version • “Launching” the final KIPAM platform • Testing, review and last release
Survey (1/…): themes and layouts 1 2 3 4 5 • A) Select the theme you would prefer for the KIPAM learning platform: 1 2 3 4 5 • B) Select what you would show to unlogged users: Bootstrap based slider Course catalogue Calendar Login box (do not check this if you would prefer a link to a login page) News
Survey (2/…): homepage for learners A) Header: Header Yes No Navigation bar B) Navigation bar Yes No C) How many columns? 1 Column 1 Column 2 Column 3 2 3 d) Footer Yes No Footer
Survey (3/…): course page A) Progresses? Yes 4 No B) Content index navigation? Yes No C) Learning path? Yes No
Survey (4/…): homepage for teachers • …and so on
Other businesses… • Integration of the e-learning platform into the KIPAM project portal • Administration of the e-learning platform • Future “migration” • SMS service
Conclusions …from wsb.poznan.pl 1. Dedicated Moodle KIPAM theme for U3A students could be created using Essential Theme as a base: (https://moodle.org/plugins/theme_essential / http://gjb2048.github.io/moodle-theme_essential/). 2. Course backups that are available to be downloaded and restored on ? Moodle site of each partner’s LMS. 3. Courses need to be open to modifications and translation, so that the university participating in KIPAM project could adapt them to cultural ? and language differences. 4. If a university uses Moodle platform the KIPAM Theme could be used on category and course level. Dedicated Moodle site is not necessary. If a university does not have a Moodle site – we should prepare a recommendation with files on how to install and configure Moodle site, theme and courses to launch U3A. 5. Essential Theme should be simplified and prepared for people 50+ in the UX field. 6. Example of Moodle site should be launched for presenting how such site and online courses look like. This site can be linked within the guidebook.
