Welcome Dear runners, Welcome to the 2021 Blue Cross Broad Street Run! The health of our community, and the resilience of our city, are the twin pillars of this year’s race. Working hand in hand with the Philadelphia Department of Public Health and our partner Independence Blue Cross, race organizers put the health and safety of runners at the heart of every aspect of race planning and preparation. Thanks to these efforts, we are celebrating a return to Broad Street for the 2021 race! To keep runners and volunteers safe, you will notice some important changes this year: • The first hybrid Broad Street Run – The 2021 Blue Cross Broad Street Run is offering a hybrid in-person and virtual race for the very first time. This flexibility means runners can put their health first when deciding how to participate in this year’s race. • A COVID-19 vaccination requirement – The 2021 Blue Cross Broad Street Run was one of the country’s first and largest urban road races to require proof of vaccination for in-person participation. • Masks throughout – Runners are required to mask up at the start and finish of the race, while staff and volunteers will be masked throughout. Lost your mask along the course? Look out for volunteers handing out Blue Cross Broad Street Run masks at the finish line. • Virtual cheering squads – The best way for spectators to support runners this year is to join a virtual cheer squad. Fans can watch the race live on sponsor station NBC10, and cheer runners on from the couch. The pandemic has challenged us to find new ways to honor old traditions, and the Blue Cross Broad Street Run is no exception. I hope we can build on the familiar traditions of past races while making new memories from ‘the year everything changed.’ Whether you are running in person or virtually, the training, commitment, and time you’ve put in will propel you forward. Whatever new opportunities race day brings, you are ready! Sincerely, -Kathryn Ott-Lovell Commissioner Parks & Recreation Commissioner 2021 Blue Cross Broad Street Run 3
“Every year, I’m impressed by the spirit and endurance of our runners, and I’m so excited that this special event is back. Philadelphia is proud to host the nation’s largest 10-miler, and I look forward to welcoming all the in-person and virtual participants to the race.” -Mayor Jim Kenney “The Blue Cross Broad Street Run is such an exciting time for Philadelphia! This year it’s an especially great way to celebrate both the strength and endurance of our city and of our runners. I wish all participants a healthy and safe race.” -Deputy Mayor Cynthia Figueroa 4 Race Program and Information Guide

“Independence Blue Cross is pleased to sponsor our region’s premier running event and the nation’s best 10-mile race once again. This is our 25th year as the title sponsor of this iconic event. Our support of the Blue Cross Broad Street run is an example of our commitment to the health and well-being of all our neighbors in Greater Philadelphia. Over the past year and a half, that commitment has driven our efforts to help communities address the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as to advocate for health equity so that everyone has the same opportunity to live a happy, healthy life. Whether you’re running on Broad Street or participating virtually, I wish all this year’s participants a safe run and a personal best!” -Gregory E. Deavens President and CEO Independence Blue Cross “NBC10 and Telemundo62 are proud to welcome back the thousands of participants and volunteers taking part in this year’s Blue Cross Broad Street Run. As we celebrate the return of Philly’s iconic 10-miler for all who are vaccinated, we look forward to sharing the local stories of their journey back to Broad Street as well as those who will participate virtually. While this year’s event will be slightly different, the focus on health and wellness will be top priority. In an effort to keep everyone safe, there will be no spectators at this year’s event. Viewers can still watch the Blue Cross Broad Street Run live in its entirety on Sunday, October 10, from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on NBC10 and Telemundo62, and streamed live on our digital platforms. Wherever you are, NBC10 and Telemundo62 will bring you all the action, the stories, and celebrations around Philly’s iconic 10- mile race. Count On It!” -Ric Harris President and General Manager NBC10 and Telemundo62 6 Race Program and Information Guide
