           NOT QUITE BUSINESS AS USUAL

Anybody looking at this picture of the Ladies Beach on Monday last, would
think it was business as usual in Ballybunion as the town was drenched in
brilliant sunshine over the Bank Holiday weekend.
Sadly, the town’s pubs and restaurants were unable to capitalise because
of the current lockdown situation, as many people ignored the travel
restrictions to visit our beaches and soak up the sun, .
I am sad to report however, that some didn't have the manners to take
home their rubbish, particularly cans, bottles and disposable barbeques,
which could have posed a potential danger to other beach users, were it
not for some community-minded locals who did a voluntary clean up each
evening.
Public toilets were not open, because the country is supposed to be still in
lockdown and people were meant to remain within 5km of their own homes,
but several over the weekend were seen “relieving” themselves behind the
toilet buildings in full view of those on the pathways overhead, which is
totally unacceptable, so maybe its time to open the toilets to the public?

 A Note from the Editor

Hello and welcome to another edition of
Ballybunion News.

Things are slowly but surely going back to a
“new” normal (whatever that is) as Ireland
prepares to enter phase two of the road to recovery
on Monday next and we are so fortunate here in
Kerry, that we are one of the least affected
counties, with no new case of the virus in over
two weeks.

My sincere condolences to our local Garda
Sergeant Mick McCarthy and his family on the
death of his father Florence in Cromane, on
Friday last. May he Rest in Peace.

I would like to thank on behalf of us all, those
people who voluntarily cleaned up the beaches
over the weekend, when several “dirty”
individuals used them as a dumping ground and I
believe the situation was the same in Beale, where
there are also some great people who care about
their community and did the same.

Stay Safe everyone and enjoy the weekend

                                               Ger

     A CLUB WITH NO HOME
L.B. Rovers (Liselton/Ballybunion) the grass roots
soccer club in our community are currently seeking
a home in the Ballybunion/Lisselton/Ballydonoghue
area. The club had until now, been playing their
home games at a pitch located next to the local
primary school Scoil Íosagain on Church Road, but
the school are planning an extension, which will
encroach on to the playing pitch and this means
that the club can no longer use it.

Set up as a grass roots club to develop under-age
soccer in 2012 by Eoin O’Mahony, a former player
who enjoyed a trophy-laden career with both Asdee
and Lisselton, L.B. Rovers currently looks after 170
boys and girls at every age level from Under-7 up to
Under-16.

A dedicated team of some twenty volunteers and
coaches look after everything including training,
transport to matches, fund-raising etc for these
kids, and they recently purchased at a cost of over
€20,000, a converted container (below) that houses
dressing rooms and toilet facilities for two teams.

Eoin takes up the story : “Changing facilities are
something we really needed to provide for our
players because we do not have any access to the
school changing facilities, so it has been very
difficult for both our own players and visiting teams
to contend with up to now, but we managed to raise
over the last two years the €20,800 required to
purchase the container facility, but unfortunately,
unless we attain our own ground, we cannot avail of
its use as it would not be permissible to put it on
school grounds”.

The container is currently awaiting dispatch from
the suppliers base, so if anybody with around three
acres of land lying idle around the Ballybunion/
Lisselton area could help, it would be very much
appreciated by these kids and their parents.
It really would be a terrible shame to see all these
efforts go to waste and the club go under, because
of the lack of playing facilities.

If you can help, please contact Eoin at : 087–
2254837.

St John’s Parish News with Fr Seán Hannafin

Ballybunion News is pleased to bring you news and readings from St John’s Church and our Parish
Priest Fr Seán Hannafin, for the duration of the current restrictions while parishioners cannot attend
mass. The following are the readings for mass on Sunday next June 7th “Trinity Sunday”.

First Reading : A reading from the Book of Exodus 34:4-6. 8-9

With the two tablets of stone in his hands, he went up the mountain of Sinai in the early morning as the
Lord had commanded him, and the Lord descended in the form of a cloud, and Moses stood with him
there. He called on the name of the Lord. The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, the Lord, a God
of tenderness and compassion, slow to anger, rich in kindness and faithfulness; And Moses bowed down
to the ground at once and worshipped.
“If I have indeed won your favour, Lord” he said ‘let my Lord come with us, I beg. True, they are a head-
strong people, but forgive us our faults and our sins, and adopt us as your heritage.’

The Word of the Lord.

Second Reading : A reading from the second letter of St Paul to the Corinthians 13:11-13

Brothers, we wish you happiness; try to grow perfect; help one another.
Be united; live in peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you.
Greet one another with the holy kiss. All the saints send you greetings.
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
The Word of the Lord.

GOSPEL : John 3:16-18
Jesus said to Nicodemus, God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son,
so that everyone who believes in him may not be lost but may have eternal life.
For God sent his Son into the world not to condemn the world, but so that through him the world might be
saved.
No one who believes in him will be condemned; but whoever refuses to believe is condemned already,
because he has refused to believe in the name of God’s only Son.
The Gospel of the Lord.

A Message from Fr Sean : The Paschal Candle (right) is a large white candle
used in Christian Churches.
A new one is blessed and lit each year at Easter and is used throughout the
Easter season and then only at Baptisms and Funerals. The Candle displays
symbols of the Cross, the Greek letters Alpha and Omega signifying how God
is the beginning and the end.

It also displays this current year 2020 representing God in the present, amidst
the community, while five grains of incense are embedded in the Candle to
represent the Five wounds of Jesus and Three nails that pierced his hands and
feet, the spear trust into his side and the thorns that crowned his head.

                                  DARREN NOONAN RIP
Many of us in Ballybunion were deeply saddened to hear of the death of
Darren Noonan from Limerick who passed away suddenly at his parents
home in Keane Street, Kilalee, in the early hours of Monday last.

The Noonan family have been coming to Ballybunion in the summer months
for over thirty years to their mobile home at McMahons on Church Road and
would be well-known to many locals, while Darren who had a great love of
music, was hugely popular among the regulars at the Cliff House Hotel
where he would socialise regularly with his family and loved to be invited to
sing by his great friend and favourite performer, Noel Nash.

Very occasionally, maybe once or twice every summer, the family would
venture down town and visit me at the Railway, but Darren would always tell
me that Noel Nash was his favourite and I didn't have a problem with that.

Pre-deceased by his brother Robert, Darren is survived by his father Mike,
mother Kathleen (pictured left with Darren), brother Edward, his fiancée Rachael
and her daughter Anna, aunts, uncles, cousins, other family members and a
Cahill’s huge circle of friends both in Limerick and Ballybunion.

He was a lovely gentle soul who will be missed by all who had the good
                              fortune to know him.
                              Rest in Peace Darren.

  DRAMA IN THE ESTUARY

Shortly after Ballybunion News went live online last
Thursday, a drama was unfolding in the Shannon
Estuary a few short miles up the coast from
Ballybunion.

A 5-year-old girl from Limerick who was visiting
Hannon’s Strand in Beale with her family, drifted
out into the estuary from the strand on an inflatable
lilo. The alarm was raised and officers at the Irish
Coast Guard’s marine rescue centre in Valentia
tasked the Shannon-based Marine Rescue
helicopter 115 to the scene.

Fortunately, the helicopter with full crew had just
taken off from Shannon on a training exercise and
was on the scene in a matter of minutes, by which
time the child on the lilo had drifted more than one
kilometre from the shore and was heading for the
mouth of the estuary in the strong winds.

A winchman was lowered and the child was
air-lifted and placed aboard the Kilrush-based
RNLI lifeboat which had also been tasked to the
scene. The child accompanied by her mother was
then taken by helicopter to University Hospital
Kerry in Tralee as a precaution but was released
later that evening having suffered no serious injury.

This was one of several incidents country-wide
over the weekend involving children and inflatables
as one five year-old boy sadly lost his life in
County Mayo when he was swept out into the
waters of Lough Mask in an inflatable boat.

Here in Ballybunion, four local swimmers got into
difficulty off the men’s beach over the weekend
when they were caught in a Rip Tide, but
thankfully, they managed to swim out of it and the
Ballybunion Sea & Cliff Rescue who had been
alerted were stood down.

All four were checked by paramedics when they
reached the shore and were thankfully safe and
sound.

    THE BIG BALLYBUNION
            QUIZ
The Big Ballybunion Quiz sponsored by Cahills
Supervalu and Fox McFadden’s Funfair, has
certainly generated a lot of interest locally and
there’s a bit of rivalry and banter going on between
some of the contestants. There are two more
rounds including this week’s, with 40 more
questions, so a lot can happen.

Here is the leader board after three rounds :

Billy Brosnan (59)
Gary Scanlon (59)
Tom Kennedy (58)
Mary Phelan (58)
Clodagh Meehan (57)
Patricia Boyle (55)
Conor Liston (54)
John Hannan (54)
Phillip Julian (48)

The rest gave up as they were too far behind, so
its now down to those above, to make a dramatic
bid over the final two rounds to win the title.

There was a little bit of controversary last week
over the answer to one question which asked :
" What was the exact population of Ballybunion
according to the 2016 Census?" to which I gave
the answer 1,854 as correct.

Those who answered 1,854 I suspect "Googled"
the answer, as I will confess that I did when setting
the question, but it was pointed out to me that
according to the Official 2016 Census, the
population of Ballybunion was indeed 1,431 not
1,854 (as Google and Wikipedia suggest).

As the question clearly stated "According to the
2016 Census" I had no choice but to award an
extra point to those who answered 1,431 and take
away a point from those who had 1,854 in the
interest of fairness and this did affect the
leader-board but to give the contestants their due,
they all accepted the decision without question
(pardon the pun) and of course it wouldn't be a
proper quiz without a bit of controversary anyway.

There are just two rounds to go and I am going to
have to make the tougher over the final two weeks
to determine the ultimate champion who will take
the title and the €200 Supervalu Voucher first
prize.

Second place gets €100 in Cash and third gets a
€50 Supervalu voucher.

                     ANTOINETTE RAISES OVER €4,000
Congratulations and well done to our own
superhero Antoinette O’Sullivan of Doon
Road who at the time of writing, had raised
in excess of a whopping €4,000 for Temple
Street hospital in Dublin.

We featured a story in a recent issue of
how Antoinette who has Apert syndrome,
was running 100 miles over the whole
month of May to raise money for the
hospital where she has attended for
treatment over the years.

Antoinette’s run came to an exciting end on
Saturday where she received a Garda
Escort on her final lap around the town and
her parents, sisters, friends and work
colleagues turned out to see her cross the
finishing line while even Disney character
Minnie Mouse also made an appearance.

It was a super achievement by the very
determined 29 year-old who has won many
admirers on social media as she tracked
her journey during the month.
Antoinette’s “Go-Fund-Me” page is still
open if anybody would like to contribute.
