GRADUATE AND PROFESSIONAL COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER JAMES H. JOHNSON JR., PH.D., is the William R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship in the Kenan- Flagler Business School and director of the Urban Investment Strategies Center in the Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Johnson earned his Bachelor of Science degree from North Carolina Central University in 1975, a master’s from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1977 and a Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 1980. He began his teaching career as assistant professor geography at the University of California, Los Angeles. In 1993, he accepted a position as a senior researcher at the Carolina Population Center at UNC Chapel Hill. Many other UNC posts he has held through the years include serving as the E. Maynard Adams Distinguished Professor of Geography from 1992 to 1999 and director of the Elder Care Economy Innovations Hub at Kenan-Flagler from 2016 to the present. Johnson’s teaching and research interests include sustainable community and economic development, poverty and public policy in urban America, workplace diversity and entrepreneurship. He has published more than 100 scholarly research articles and three research monographs. Johnson also has co-edited four theme issues of scholarly journals on these and related topics. Currently, he is researching strategies to combat hyper-segregation, persistent and concentrated poverty, and gentrifcation- induced residential and economic dislocations in U.S. cities. Fast Company profled him in “Hopes and Dreams.” He received the Kenan-Flagler Business School Leadership Award in 2019 and was the 2018 Distinguished Senior Fellow for the Education Commission of the States. Johnson is a past recipient of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill’s General Alumni Association Faculty Service Award. 8
BACCALAUREATE COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER North Carolina Central University alumna JASMINE CROWE is an award-winning social entrepreneur, TED Speaker, and leader who is working to make the world a better place one cause at a time. In 2017, Crowe launched Goodr, a sustainable food surplus management company that leverages block-chain technology to combat hunger and reduce waste. Goodr has provided more than 12 million pounds of surplus food to millions of food-insecure people. Te Atlanta-based company’s clients include Turner Broadcasting Systems, Hartsfeld- Jackson International Airport, the Georgia World Congress Center and more. During the pandemic, Goodr also introduced pop-up grocery stores for the community along with a grocery delivery program. A communications major who earned her bachelor’s degree from NCCU in 2005, she also obtained a master’s degree in nonproft management at the University of Arizona. In 2011, she launched her frst company, Black Celebrity Giving, or BCG, partnering with celebrities to raise funds and support for a variety of causes. Crowe’s other accomplishments include creating and producing Change Makers, which profled how celebrities use their star power for social change, on Magic Johnson's network, ASPIRE!, and a four-part Little Miss Atlanta series that appeared on the TLC channel. Her TED talk, “Hunger is not a Scarcity Issues, it's a Logistics Issue,” addresses the challenges of sustainable waste management. She also has a children's book series titled Giving is Good. Her work has been featured in Hufngton Post, on CNBC, Oprah Magazine, Forbes, Te New York Times. Crowe named by Entrepreneur Magazine as one of the top 100 infuential female founders. She describes her overarching goals as to fostering change and creating awareness about the socioeconomic challenges of today, including poverty, food waste, and hunger. In her spare time, Crowe enjoys reading, traveling and spending time with friends and family. 9

THE FOUNDER JAMES E. SHEPARD was born Nov. 3, 1875, in Raleigh, the son of the Rev. Augustus and Mrs. Harriet Whitted Shepard. He received undergraduate and professional training at Shaw University, from which he graduated in 1894. Te next year he married Annie Day Robinson, a descendant of Tomas Day, a famed North Carolina furniture maker. Te Shepards had three daughters, Marjorie A. Shepard, Annie Day Shepard Smith, and Marion Shepard, who died in infancy. Te family legacy continues through the two daughters of Annie Day Shepard Smith, Annie Day Smith Donaldson and Carolyn Marie Smith Green, their children, and Mrs. Green’s grandchildren. Soon after his graduation, Shepard opened a pharmacy business in Durham, and he continued his education in theology and related studies. From 1905 to 1909, he traveled nationally and internationally as feld superintendent for the International Sunday School Association, whose goal was a standardized Christian education curriculum across denominational lines. By 1909, he had decided to start his school to train pastors and educate African-Americans, who were shut out of most opportunities for higher education by Jim Crow laws. Te frst 130 students arrived in 1910 when the school opened as the National Religious Training School and Chautauqua for the Colored Race. It was supported by the philanthropy of Dr. Shepard’s numerous black and white friends in both the North and the South. Te institution struggled in its early years and sufered two devastating fres. Undeterred, Shepard would reconfgure the school and press on. He was a constant presence on campus. He demanded decorum and stellar behavior of students and faculty. From his home and from his ofce, he kept a close watch on the students’ comings and goings. Shepard also played key roles in the founding of major fnancial institutions that serve African-Americans to this day. He became a sought-after speaker nationally. He lent his infuence at the state and federal levels to increasing public aid to African-American education. He died in his NCCU home on Oct. 6, 1947. Te tiny enterprise had grown to a physical plant worth $2 million, with state appropriations that year of an additional $2 million. At the time of his passing, African-Americans could earn an array of degrees from then North Carolina College at Durham, including law and nursing. 13

UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA BOARD OF GOVERNORS AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING LENORA HELM HAMMONDS is a tenured associate professor in the Department of Music and Jazz Studies Program at North Carolina Central University who considers herself a “global disciplinarian.” Her academic interests and research lie at the intersection of intercultural development, jazz pedagogy and digital humanities. A former U.S. Jazz Ambassador and appointed twice as a Fulbright senior music specialist, Helm Hammonds teaches graduate and undergraduate performance in vocal jazz performance, ear training and songwriting. She also directs the NCCU Vocal Jazz Ensemble. She was a founder of the National Endowment of the Arts-sponsored NCCU Teaching Artist Certifcate Program and was leader of a 12-person international team authoring globally networked learning environments, and pioneering the Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) methodology for NCCU’s College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities. A native of Chicago, Helm Hammonds worked as a teaching artist for arts organizations including Carnegie Hall and the Brooklyn Philharmonic before coming to NCCU in 2005. She is a past president of International Women in Jazz and a board member of New York Arts-in-Education Roundtable and GRAMMY in the Schools programs. Helm Hammonds is a sought-after guest lecturer at international universities and conferences as a jazz education expert. Her academic award highlights include being the 2021 Board of Governors Excellence in Teaching Award for the UNC System. She holds a Bachelor of Music in flm scoring and voice from Berklee College of Music, a Master of Music in jazz performance from East Carolina University and is a candidate for a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in music education from Boston University. Helm Hammonds has been a performing artist for more than three decades, known professionally as Lenora Zenzalai Helm. She continues to perform and tour as a jazz vocalist, vocal musicianship coach, composer, lyricist and big band bandleader and has seven commercially released recordings to her credit. 18
