Nordic Algae Network Value chain development and commercialization of algae in Norway – Norges Vel´s approach, Ås 16.11.12 Eva-Mari Rahkola 1
The Royal Norwegian Society for Development (Norges Vel) Norges Vel has for 200 years been working with innovative consulting in nature and culture-based Kunnskap development Through sustainable projects, the Society is concerned with the creation of communities Nyskaping Vision: thriving communities Core Areas • Food, culture and adventure Organisering • Energy and Environment • Entrepreneurship and business organization 35 employees Samarbeid • Offices Hellerud in Oslo, Bergen, Levanger, Kosovo and Tanzania «Grønne» verdier 2
Development goals Norges Vels development project, aims to find and map the potential regarding a Norwegian algae cultivation, processes and products- The vision Is to contribute in the establishing of a competitive Norwegian industry with growing, processing and products algae as a recourses • Locate opportunities to use algae direct or indirect as a new resource in products, processes • Work to enhance the blue - green cooperation that require knowledge of plant and marine technology knowledge 3
Project goals- how to operationalize these goals?? • Norges Vel take initiative to be partners in projects with producers, users and research and development relevant to local communities • Commercialization of R & D results • Work towards a long-term and favorable framework conditions for the algae industry 4

Value chain development- what's our role? • coordinate relevant actors and networks • aims to be the bridge between research and industry by applying research results in the development of eg algae industry in Norway • support the small, medium and existing companies to develop the sector further, based on research results • Developing pilot that can be models for future entrepreneurs. 7
Pilots Pilots demonstrates very effectively if research and development results are ready for commercialization regarding different value chains; products, production processes, raw materials, etc. The pilots also provides knowledge and data concerning future use of resources, knowledge, needs and interpersonal skills between the involved actors. Pilots demonstrates effectively how value chains can develop, both high end products and volume based products. 8
Pilots The pilots we are engaged in includes all parts (algae) value chain, with the aim to demonstrate the production cycle, production processes products ready for market. mapping the extent to which coastal industries, agricultural sector and (other) producers can be involved as potential growers and markets for algae products. We search for both local entrepreneurs and bigger ventures 9
PILOT VAL vgs. 10
Preliminary Val vgs. pilot project The pilot project will prepare the ground for a pilot plant to demonstrate algae cultivation in the sea in the direction of Val vgs, educational, industrial development in the region. Project partners: Bellona and Bioforsk nord Use in teaching in Val vgs. • Tracing how the pilot can be adapted for instruction on Vg1/Vg2 • Planning how the pilot can be used to build up expertise and networks within algal cultivation Future industrial development • Estimation of the potential for local economic development in the region and new jobs for algal cultivation and supply chain • Initial assessment of the actors in the region who are interested in algae cultivation, and the involvement of the most relevant actors. 11
Another pilot: eg. valuechain food 12
For the future Challenges- What we need to solve to break the barriers from research to commerce marked Who is the potential producers? Small scale vs. industrial scale production High value products vs. low value products Norwegian marked? Is there a will? Marked- Access to information and technology Efficiency knowledge transfers Upscale? Marked? Value? 13
NORSK ALGEFORENING- join us! Norges vel is currently administrering Norsk Algeforening (Norwegian algae network) Formally established an interim board 14.11.2012 • The Association shall collect and involve stakeholders and decision makers in the algae industry. • Integrating R & D and industry with the goal of technology, economic development and wealth creation in the algae industry.
