STATEMENT OF PURPOSE Leadership Training for Christ is an organization designed to stimulate and encourage spiritual, mental, and social growth among young men and women in grades three through twelve. Its mission is to achieve this growth by developing skills in leadership, Bible knowledge, and Christian servanthood. Skill development in each of these areas will be accomplished through participation in a variety of individual and group events. These events will take place within the context of a wholesome and supportive environment designed for the purpose of fostering enthusiasm and high achievement among the participants. CODE OF ETHICS FOR CHURCH COORDINATORS 1. LTC is for the growth and spiritual development of our youth. The CTLTC preparation must be the student’s own work. Guidance, resources, and encouragement must be provided so that students can develop their own ideas. 2. Church Coordinators must place their emphasis on participation and effort rather than on competition and winning. Lesser value comes from winning; maximum value comes from hard work and best efforts. 3. Church Coordinators must emphasize servant leadership. It is not enough to teach public communication skills, but additionally, we must model and teach leadership through servanthood. 4. Church Coordinators must find important and needed areas for our youth leaders to be integrated into the overall leadership of the church. Our youth need responsibilities now that give them important roles and contribute to the church. USE OF MATERIALS BY CTLTC Individual participants retain all ownership of ideas presented as a part of CTLTC events. By submitting their work in any CTLTC event, the participant authorizes the use of that material (written, audio-taped, video-taped, photographed, digitally or electronically imaged) by the CTLTC Board of Directors in any way the Board may deem appropriate, including promotion or fund-raising for Christian leadership training of youth. This use may include books, audio or video tapes, CDs, DVDs, multi-media presentations, anthologies, or other media. Copyrighted material received as an entry will not be judged. It will not be accepted for any event and will be returned to the sender. 2019 CTLTC MANUAL / No Greater Love Page 4
CONVENTION ETIQUETTE GUIDELINES 1. All Church Coordinators are responsible for ensuring that these guidelines are reviewed with each member of their group and that each person fully understands what is expected. 2. It is expected that all convention participants will be on their best behavior. Remember that we are guests of the hotel and the Convention Center. 3. Always be aware of your noise level in the hallways, foyers, and rooms. 4. Always walk in the corridors and other public places. 5. Allow others plenty of access to public facilities by properly using elevators and corridors. 6. Take special care to protect the hotel, Convention Center, and CTLTC property. 7. Stay on the hotel and Convention Center property unless accompanied by an adult sponsor. 8. Remember, there is a general curfew of 11:30 PM for all convention participants, both Friday and Saturday night. This will be strictly enforced by convention and hotel staff. Students must be in their rooms after curfew unless accompanied by their adult sponsor. 9. Your CTLTC bracelet serves as your credentials for the convention. It must be worn at all times, during convention hours even when you are not currently involved in an event. No one (student, adult or guest) will be allowed to enter an event area without a CTLTC bracelet. 10. It is recommended that participants locate the rooms in which they will participate at least 30 minutes prior to the starting time of each event. 11. Stay in the event room during the time when students are participating. Each event area will have specific rules about entering and exiting the room. 12. The Convention Registration/Information Booth will be staffed until 9:00 PM Friday night and until 4:30 PM Saturday afternoon. REMEMBER THAT PEOPLE’S IMPRESSIONS OF CHRIST AND HIS CHURCH ARE DIRECTLY AFFECTED BY YOUR BEHAVIOR. CREATE A POSITIVE REFLECTION OF YOUR CONGREGATION, YOUR FAMILY, AND CHRIST BY MAINTAINING HIGH STANDARDS OF CONDUCT. THE CHURCH COORDINATOR SHOULD COPY THIS PAGE AND GIVE A COPY TO EACH PERSON COMING TO THE CONVENTION 2019 CTLTC MANUAL / No Greater Love Page 5
ADULT VOLUNTEERS Adult volunteers are crucial to a convention that runs smoothly, is safe, and allows each participant to be encouraged and uplifted in showcasing his/her talents to glorify God. There are many positions that we need adult volunteers to fill at the convention. If each congregation will provide the number of volunteers asked, all events will run efficiently and with a minimum of confusion. It is suggested that your FIRST duty would be to select someone to serve as a Congregational Volunteer Coordinator and make that name known to: Current information listed @ http://www.ctltc.net There are three main functions that volunteers serve at the Convention. We will try to give all volunteers the task they prefer but do ask that everyone is flexible enough to serve in any of these areas: 1. Event Monitors: These individuals work with the Event Directors to move participants and observers smoothly into and out of the events, help maintain order, and any other functions that the Event Director requires. We need one or two monitors for each room of every event. 2. Event Judges: Volunteer judges are vital to the success of CTLTC. We are not looking for experts in each field but rather adults with loving hearts who have the ability to encourage children. Except for Sign Language, NO EXPERIENCE IS ANTICIPATED OR REQUIRED. Each Event Director will provide these individuals with ample materials and guidance to help them fairly evaluate each participant. Two to four judges are needed for each room of each event. 3. Security or Floor Monitors: These individuals will work with the Security Director to keep the children safe and the Convention secure. A congregation may choose to dedicate all of their adult volunteers to this need to provide a more coordinated and cohesive effort. Before registration begins you should have a meeting of all adults that will be attending the Convention. At that meeting you could invite those who are working with the children or coming to observe, as well as anyone else desiring to volunteer. Each volunteer is asked to work at least one event for one full timeslot. You might make those folks aware of the congregation’s responsibilities. Those obligations include: 1. Determine how many participants your congregation will have in individual convention events (Bible Reading, Christian Art, etc). Then look toward providing at least one (1) volunteer per four (4) entrants. 2. Determine how many teams your congregation will have enrolled in each team event (Puppets, Drama, Chorus, etc.). Look to provide at least one (1) additional volunteer for each and every enrolled team. (Please note that Bible Bowl requires each team to have an adult scorekeeper. This individual need not be registered as a volunteer.) 3. Following that, each congregation will need to provide a list of those volunteers to CTLTC Registration no later than final registration deadline. They will be registered via the web as are the participants. 4. Next, each congregation’s event monitors and event judges should receive training in the event for which they volunteered, regardless of their preference for monitoring or judging. Please review the rules in the manual and download the appropriate information for each event from the “Volunteer Information” section of the CTLTC Website. 5. The day of the convention, each Event Director will have a plan of action concerning his/her event. Therefore, each judge and monitor should check in at the volunteers table near the Convention Registration area for final instructions and room assignments. 6. If a volunteer is unable to perform his/her duties, it is each congregation’s responsibility to find a replacement. ”Volunteer Information” is available on the CTLTC Website. This information should be shared not only with all of the volunteers but also with those working with the children to help them to understand how their event will be judged. Please remember that your volunteers could also come from people within your congregation who don’t have participants but want to help. For instance, how about grandparents, deacons, elders, or others who may have moved on from direct parenting or who have never parented but love (or at least like) children. College-age students are also welcomed! CTLTC has strong hopes of encouraging former participants to remain active in the Convention. They are designated as “Torchbearers” and will receive a special welcome and T-shirt. Not only are they blessed by their own participation and fill a great need, but their presence is a great encouragement to our older participants. 2019 CTLTC MANUAL / No Greater Love Page 6
The Board wishes to thank those of you involved in working to provide volunteers, as well as the volunteers themselves. We are all part of a larger picture (John 15:4). All the Board’s planning does not work unless everyone does his/her share. As the EVENT GUIDANCE SHEETS will remind you, we are doing this (LTC) to encourage our young people to use their talent to glorify God, and your role is vital to that success. 2019 CTLTC MANUAL / No Greater Love Page 7
JUDGING & THE PHILOSOPHY OF CTLTC PURPOSE: The purpose of this form is to make your job as a judge easier by informing you of your duties. From this form you will learn what you are to do, as well as when and how you are to do it. WHAT YOU HAVE AGREED TO DO: CTLTC has many activities in which a child can participate. To encourage each participant, CTLTC has his/her efforts reviewed by older, more knowledgeable Christians, namely you, the event judge. As a judge you are agreeing to provide positive and constructive feedback, thus helping the young person want to continue in CTLTC. Also you are agreeing NOT to corrupt this process by either over-emphasizing performance based on your personal criteria for excellence, or by devaluating achievement with blanket gold awards. Encourage rather than discourage. If your mind is open to the presentation of each child or group of children, desiring God’s wish that they be motivated, then you will do well. SO…WHAT DO YOU DO: FIRST You familiarize yourself with the event you have agreed to judge. There is a section dedicated to your event in this manual. That section should include the technical rules and regulations for that event. You should be familiar with this element. In the case of convention events, there will be an EVENT GUIDANCE SHEET in the ”Volunteer Information” section of the CTLTC web page with which you should become familiar. This guidance is from past experience. If you have ideas for judging that conflict with this information, then you should make your feelings known to the Event Director for that particular event. Also, you should find an example of a scoring sheet. You should become familiar with this sheet because, in some cases, you will have a limited amount of time to fill it in. SECOND You should, if possible, visit with some of the young people who are working on the same event and witness what they do, and how they are taught. This should increase your insight. THIRD Ensure your name is submitted to your Congregational Volunteer Coordinator. The Volunteer Coordinator for your congregation has the responsibility of submitting your name to CTLTC Registration, but you might make sure it occurs. FOURTH Your next responsibility is to check in at the VOLUNTEER TABLE once you arrive at the Convention Center. At that time you will receive any last minute instructions concerning your event. Most Event Directors hold an informal meeting BEFORE the event begins to insure they have sufficient volunteers who know what they’re doing. FIFTH You are to report to your event in plenty of time to discharge your judging duties. You should now be familiar with the event and what’s expected to insure that the lives of these young people are positively affected. If you are prepared, you will enjoy this experience, especially if you rely on the Lord to guide you in what you do. ONE LAST ITEM Make sure you give yourself a round of encouragement. Although you may not receive anything else for your efforts, know that serving others in His name brings blessing on all involved. ADULT VOLUNTEER REGISTRATION Adult Volunteers should register via the web through your Church Coordinator, same as participants. Adult Volunteers should be registered by the final registration deadline. http://www.CTLTC.net/ 2019 CTLTC MANUAL / No Greater Love Page 8

To discover God’s passion for sharing His story with those wanting salvation; to learn what role we play by ourselves and what role we play with God’s help in teaching others the Good News of God’s plans for their lives. To prepare the participant for a ministry that fits his/her life and create ministry strategies that blend his/her calling and his/her career. To encourage Christian young people to work with others in teaching non-Christians about Jesus and His plans for their lives. PROCESS: Each participant shall: - Register as a web teacher with World Bible School (www.worldbibleschool.net) - Engage ten (10) students in online study (minimum to participate in this event) - Help your students move through the WBS material - Secure a mentor from your congregation - Submit an essay to determine your level of award before the Pre-Convention deadline The Church Coordinator shall: - Register only high school students for this challenge PROJECTS: While we encourage all Challenge participants to focus on teaching their WBS students as the main exercise for this event, each participant may also supplement his/her WBS teaching with one of the following projects: 1. Arrange, prepare, and conduct one-on-one study with a non-Christian 2. Participate in a church-led mission trip 3. Plan and join in an evangelistic outreach in your school AWARDS: The ultimate reward for this Challenge event is the satisfying thrill of helping someone make that eternal decision to become a baptized follower of Jesus Christ. However, a more practical reward is learning how to appreciate our role as “planters” of the Word in someone’s life as God grows his/her faith. As an event, the award will be based on the participant’s essay submitted to the CTLTC Evangelism Challenge Event Director. This paper will answer specific questions which will be distributed after registration, covering topics such as, how the participant learned from his/her mentor about how to teach others and how the participant understood his/her mission of evangelism as a lifestyle more than simply an event. The participant’s essay will be distributed to a three-member panel for review and consideration, consisting of the WBS Church Coordinator, a CTLTC Board Member, and one elder from the participant’s congregation. The weight of this essay is the content, not style, grammar, or writing ability. The event reward is based on what the participant learned and how the participant plans to use this knowledge for the rest of his/her life. Evangelism Challenge can only be submitted by EMAIL: using the link on the CTLTC home page: http://www.ctltc.net/ 2019 CTLTC MANUAL / No Greater Love Page 17

General Information for Fiction Writing: 1. Fiction is what it says. It is make-believe. The writer is free to construct his/her own reality. However, he/she must be careful that his/her fiction is believable. If one aspect is totally unable to ever happen or if it is just not ever likely to happen that way, then we suggest it be revised to accommodate believability. 2. To be a story it must have certain elements. It must have a beginning, middle, and a conclusion. That seems rather basic, but surprisingly this is often forgotten. 3. The writer must have a main character (called a protagonist), one with whom the reader can empathize or identify. This character must be likable but should have at least one human frailty. Also, he/she should have something he/she wants or needs desperately or a goal he/she must attain. 4. Then problems must arise in the path of the protagonist - events that keep him/her from his/her wants, needs, or goal. These can be incidents or people who stand in his/her way (antagonists). 5. The main character must then overcome these problems and, if it is to be inspirational, along the way his/her inner character must change for the better or there must be changing of the frailty already mentioned. 6. To accomplish describing the protagonist or telling the story, one good way is to let dialogue reveal what needs to be known. Another way is to appeal to the reader’s senses. For example, let him/her hear the background noises or the knife cutting through the leather jacket; let him/her smell the cafeteria or the wet dog; let him/her feel the cold and rough concrete wall or that velour sweater; let him/her see a character slip the money into a pocket or the tears in the teacher’s eyes. Don’t TELL what is happening, SHOW it. 7. CHOOSE A VIEWPOINT. The writer may tell the story from a character’s viewpoint, but remember the reader can only know what that particular character can see, hear, touch, smell, or find out from dialogue with others. The writer can use omniscient viewpoint which gives a broader scope, but it will not be as personal as a character’s viewpoint. 8. The writer needs to know when to end. Let our characters and what happens to them illustrate the principle we are trying to get across. If I have done my job as a writer, the reader will already know the principle or truism I’m telling. A writer’s job is finished when the characters and what happens to them illustrate the principle or truism that was intended by the writer. 2019 CTLTC MANUAL / No Greater Love Page 31
