Although he still fails quite frequently, he is incredibly fortunate to work in a hospital full of the best young minds in veterinary medicine. He is also fortunate to have married way above himself, to the much smarter and better looking, Dr. Tracy Webb. 2021 New Conference Information Registration Details This year’s 2021 Veterinary Education Conference has been redesigned to safely accommodate attendees by adhering to hotel, state, and CDC guidelines for COVID-19 protocol. Due to these restrictions at this time, registration is limited to 205 attendees. Should capacity limits be increased, registration limits will also increase. It is the top priority of the NJVMA to offer an innovative and robust program while following current safety guidelines. While general sessions will be open to all attendees, breakout sessions will have limited seating based on current hotel restrictions and will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that breakout sessions will be monitored, and in the case of full seating capacity, attendees will be asked to join another session where seating is available. Registration will not be overbooked; a seat is available to every attendee, but plan to arrive early if you’ve identified a must-see session! Despite our unique challenges this year, the NJVMA anticipates another memorable meeting with plenty of networking opportunities, valuable programming, and exhibitor presence. We hope to see you there! RACE Standards New! RACEtrack® is a free service that allows veterinary professionals the chance to record all continuing education (CE) course work in a single centralized database. This system easily communicates your CE to your credentialing agencies while also allowing those authorized agencies to retrieve your CE. You can visit the website here: https://aavsb.org/ce-services/racetrack. As a participant in this new program, NJVMA is required to upload an attendee roster to this platform. This attendee roster requires your license number and licensing state and we are therefore asking for this information when you register for the conference. Attendees will be identified by license number and the licensing jurisdiction with no other personal information. 5 New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association 2021 Veterinary Education Conference

There are some commercial formulas available on the market today and even more recipes for homemade milk replacements available online and in books. This lecture will explain the key nutritional requirements of neonatal puppies and kittens. We will discuss the pros and cons of some diets intended for supplementing or feeding newborn puppies and kittens. 11:00 – 11:50 am G Canine Pancreatitis: A Painful Problem, Dr. Craig Webb This continues to be a frustrating problem to understand, diagnose, and treat...you are not alone. KEY: G GASTROENTEROLOGY E EMERGENCY/CRITICAL CARE Session Abstracts I INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE TD TECHNICIAN-DENTISTRY P PAIN MANAGEMENT TN TECHNICIAN-NUTRITION B SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2021 continued 11:00 – 11:50 am P Pain Management: Drug Interactions & Co-Morbidities, Dr. Mark Epstein continued While “multi-modal” pain management by definition is not strictly limited to drug therapies, pharmacologic interventions will inevitably play a central role. With polypharmacy comes the risk of undesirable drug interactions. Furthermore, pain exists in the entire spectrum of veterinary patients, including those with comorbid disease states. This session will focus on commonly-encountered potential drug interactions and drug risks in patients with renal disease, liver disease, heart disease, and others, and practical tips for avoiding adverse drug events in these circumstances. E Insidious & Deadly: Diagnosis & Management of Hypoadrenocorticism, Dr. Elisa Mazzaferro Hypoadrenocorticism is a disease that is fairly easy to treat once you make a diagnosis. Pathophysiology, diagnostic testing, emergency and long-term management of the patient with hypoadrenocorticism will be discussed. TD Feline Dentistry, Vickie Byard, CVT, VTS (Dentistry) This presentation will focus on the issues specifically related to our feline friends. The focus will range from their special handling needs to species specific dental related medical challenges. The objectives of this session are to show the differences in the triadan numbering system as compared to the canine patient, to understand the importance of appropriate use of the dental explorer, to discuss current investigations in tooth resorptions, to outline the protocol for crown amputations with intentional root retention as a treatment for tooth resorptions, and to provide the attendant with a deeper understanding of the critical need for intraoral radiographs especially in this species. TN Approaches to Feeding the Finicky Patient, Ed Carlson, CVT, VTS (Nutrition) Do your clients complain that their pets are finicky eaters? Do you have poor compliance rates when you recommend a diet change or prescribe a veterinary therapeutic diet? P Focus on Feline Pain Management, Dr. Mark Epstein Evidence-based protocols for the trans-operative period, and for degenerative joint disease/osteoarthritis-related chronic pain in cats will be I discussed. Insofar as possible this will be an interactive session to benchmark audience members’ own protocols in practice. E Approach to the Collapsed Patient: Seizures, Syncope & More, Dr. Elisa Mazzaferro Causes of collapse include cardiovascular or neurologic disorders. Diagnosis and treatment of hypovolemia, pericardial effusion, dysrhythmias, syncope, hypoglycemia, and neurologic disorders will be discussed. TD Regional Nerve Blocks in Small Animal Dental Patient, Vickie Byard, CVT, VTS (Dentistry) This session will provide the information needed to understand how regional anesthetic blocks provide an important part of the multi-modal approach to anesthesia in the dental patient. Doses, techniques, and contraindications will all be covered. The objectives of this session will be to outline the benefits versus the risks and to give technicians greater confidence in placement. TN Nutritional Management of Pancreatitis, Ed Carlson, CVT, VTS (Nutrition) Pancreatitis is the most common exocrine pancreatic disease in both dogs and cats. Nutritional support of these patients is considered a key B component of successful treatment. This lecture will explain the clinical signs and the key nutritional factors of the disease. A variety of diet options will be discussed. A case of a patient with severe pancreatitis is used to demonstrate the severity of the disease and encourage discussion of a variety of nutritional support options. The objectives of this session will be that attendees will learn the key nutritional factors for pancreatitis patients, understand the importance of nutritional support of pancreatitis patients and how to select an appropriate diet for patients suffering from pancreatitis. 2:20 – 3:10 pm G Failed Therapy: Embrace the Opportunity, Dr. Craig Webb Right?! Don't think of it as “failure,” think of it as an opportunity to not fail so badly next time! TN Nutritional Support of Gastrointestinal Disease, Ed Carlson, CVT, VTS (Nutrition) Acute or chronic diarrhea are common symptoms associated with many diseases that fall under the category of gastrointestinal disease; vomiting and anorexia are also seen in some cases. Dogs and cats suffering from a variety of these diseases benefit when medical management is combined with the proper nutritional support. The gastrointestinal tract plays an important role in the digestion and absorption of nutrients. Therefore, nutritional support for these diseases is essential for our patients! The timing, frequency, route of feeding, and nutrient composition of the diet also plays an important role in intestinal health. Key nutritional factors to consider when making a dietary recommendation for patients suffering from various GI diseases will be explained. Common nutritional misconceptions and myths will also be discussed.
