4 www.sedibengster.com SEDIBENG STER 24 February - 2 March 2021 ‘Can’t be business as usual’ Zacharia Nale EVATON.- With the number of gender- based violence (GBV) on the rise in the community, the Tosunga Baninga Orga- nisation has embarked on a ‘Can’t Be Business as usual’ Campaign. The Tosunga Baninga Organisation is a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) that fights for the rights of women in the Vaal. Their campaign follows after a number of cases of gender-based vio- lence (GBV) that either have been with- drawn from court or are left unattended. Sedibeng Ster was referred to, and recently visited two women who are victims of gender-based violence (GBV) but their cases apparently fell on deaf ears. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Suzan Masitha (35) and Malebusetsa Chakane (46) said they want the perpe- trators behind the bars. The two women from Evaton shared their experience on how their partners abused and assaulted them without remorse. To make it worse, Masitha said that she miscarried twice because her boyf- riend had assaulted her while she was pregnant. This is part of originations’ national cam- paign to collect one million garbage bags in the country. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, the MoveOne Million CEO, Derek Holmes said the cam- paign has gained massive momentum and his organisation is delighted with the positive res- ponse they receive from the communities they engage with. “We are driving pride, passion and purpose with all South Africans. We are also simultane- ously combining our efforts with other groups who wish to participate. Lebohang Mofokeng, who is the Project Coordinator said that as part of their awareness, they could not wait for the local government to clean all the dumping sites in La- keside Proper, Zone 3 and Evaton. “We started to clean the area in the beginning of February, aiming for a duration of up to six months. We contributed amongst ourselves and hired TLBs as the garbage was too much to handle with the shovels and wheelbarrows and we appeal to the community members in Ward 41 to join hands and stop dumping everywhere they see an open space. This has nothing to do with politi- cal parties. “We are here wishing to do good for our community. We will appre- ciate any mechanism that support the idea,” she said.
