These countries are primed to benefit economically. The initiative aims to enhance regional connectivity, involving a series of infrastructure development and investments. Meanwhile, as a dynamic hub for global commerce, the UAE has strategic advantages in uniting regional countries for a new journey under the Belt and Road Initiative, becoming a force to boost regional sustainable development. This panel will enable participants to understand how the UAE can provide connectivity for businesses worldwide, especially among countries in Asia and Africa. [Key Areas] Infrastructure, Engineering Equipment Infrastructure is fundamental to economic development, such as roads, bridges, water 7
supply, electrical grids, and telecommunications (including Internet connectivity and broadband speeds). This means huge opportunities for relevant equipment manufacturers and traders. Energy Industry An increase of more than a quarter of energy demand globally by 2040 is foreseeable, mainly because of rising incomes and rapid urbanisation in developing countries, according to the latest world energy outlook released by the International Energy Agency in 2018. In particular, there has been a profound shift in energy consumption to Asia and it now covers all fuels, technologies, as well as in energy investment. For instance, Asia now makes up half of the global growth in natural gas, 80 percent of the increase in oil, and more than 100 percent of the growth in sectors of coal and nuclear, according to the energy outlook report. Against this background, this panel will enable participants to learn more about their business environment and explore cooperation opportunities with their partners, especially Chinese companies. It is particularly meaningful since currently six of the world’s top power companies measured by installed capacity are Chinese utilities. Industrial Investment This panel provides excellent opportunities for enterprises and individuals who are prepared to invest in local relevant industries and foster regional sustainable development. High-quality cooperation and investment projects on the basis of sharing experience and resource are expected during this session. Moderator: Hon. Dubai Creek Tower, which is under construction, is expected to become the tallest tower across the world when it is completed. The observation tower is located in Dubai, the first Arab city ever to hold the World Expo event. The UAE is expected to welcome 25 million visits between October 2020 and April 2021, according to the expo’s official website. It is estimated that 70 percent of the visitors are coming from outside the country. This will be the first major world exhibition where most visitors will come from other countries. [Key Areas] Innovative Talents To build smart cities, just like Dubai, has emerged as a centre of opportunities. Cities could find new solutions to social and economic development by encouraging collaborative work and the application of talent for innovation in science and technology. Discussions in this panel will focus on “Opportunity”, one of the three themes of the upcoming World Expo which encourages creative thinking and 9
innovation, a better response to the growing challenges of economic globalisation. 2020 Expo Discovery This panel enables participants to better seek business opportunities related to the upcoming World Expo, the first of this kind to be held in West Asia, Africa and South Asia region. Participants do not have to wait until October next year to get involved. For instance, the panel will provide a dialogic platform for international companies that are looking to set up a business in Dubai, helping them to seek the assistance of a local corporate services provider with relevant knowledge and experience. 2. Rundong Xu, Under Secretary General of China International Public Relations Association. 14:00-16:00 Plenary Theme Discussion 3 “Looking into the Future: New Lifestyle” [Al Ain D] -- Scientific and Technological Innovation, Finance Support The lifestyle in this panel refers to the ways for both working and living. For instance, there is a notion that the artificial intelligence sector now plays a crucial role in a new round of industrial revolution. To be specific, AI-related tech has rapidly changed people’s lifestyle and production mode, with wide applications in the fields of city planning, intelligent transportation, social management, and healthcare. In practice, a growing number of companies globally have pledged to bring more of their latest high-tech products to customers. Most of them are targeting countries with great potential markets because of the growing middle-income groups. For instance, China has been listed among these countries since the country’s middle-income group is estimated to increase to 630 million people by 2022, according to consulting firm McKinsey. The dialogic platform provided in this panel serves as a bridge connecting innovation businesses with its targeting markets and customers and will help them gain vision of the future. [Key Areas] Artificial Intelligence Society is on a shift from " Internet plus" to "AI plus". "AI plus" means to integrate artificial intelligence into various traditional industries and transform these industries and create new business formats based on the old. The field of artificial intelligence faces some challenges. The first challenge is product responsibility. Due to the questionable reliability of technology and the inherent design defects of intelligent systems, the problem of product responsibility comes with the development of artificial intelligence. The second challenge is privacy. When we enter a time when everything is interconnected with big data and machine learning, privacy will become a "luxury". The third challenge is the ethics issue. The development and popularisation of artificial intelligence have great impact on traditional social ethics. Blockchain Blockchain is dedicated to solve the credential problem between entities. It challenges 11
our understanding of the existing organisational model of society. There are many challenges to blockchain today, such as how to integrate with the existing legal system and potential bubbles. What we need to do now is to continue addressing the issue of matching blockchain applications with market value. Finance Support Dubai has been selected as their West Asia headquarters by many global enterprises. Options for further finance support will be discussed as an effort to deepen the UAE’s relationship with the international financial system. Moderator: Hon. The Belt and Road Initiative is a solution proposed by China to address the current worldwide challenges. Under the initiative, economic globalisation will become more inclusive and beneficial to all. On the other hand, the UAE is strategically located at a junction among Europe, Asia, and Africa. In particular, Dubai has risen to become an international trade hub and a place of cultural symbiosis, hosting diverse nationalities and covering every corner of the globe. Meanwhile, most New Zealanders value a robust multicultural society and believe that it is a positive trend for a community to be made up of residents coming from regions with different cultures. Immigrants maintain their original culture while also adopting the culture in New Zealand. Against this backdrop, discussions in this panel will focus on further strengthening cooperation in the international community while maintaining cultural diversity among different nations. [Key Areas] Travel Industry China has become a leading source of visitors to many countries, including the UAE and New Zealand. As many as 875,000 Chinese tourists paid visits to Dubai in 2018, a 12 percent year-on-year increase, according to the city’s tourism office. Also, New Zealand welcomed more than 450,000 Chinese visitors in 2018. This figure is expected to increase to 800,000 by 2024. It has been highlighted that tourism is a major engine to advance local industries, such as investments in real estate and high-class hotels. Contributions of tourism to stimulating consumption and GDP growth are also significant. This panel will enable participants to take part in tourism-related international cooperation and development programmes. They will also share opportunities to explore how to boost tourism in the future and how they can use it as a path to foster 13
international cooperation. Cultural Exchanges Cultural exchanges are playing an important role in bilateral relations given that the economic interactions and people-to-people exchanges have intensified dramatically thanks to globalisation. At the same time, societies have become increasingly multicultural. People living in many countries, such as the UAE, New Zealand, and China, now have easy access to multiple cultures. In a metropolitan city, different languages, religions, art, music, films are the richness on offer. Discussions in this panel will focus on how to share different cultures with visitors across the world and will provide an opportunity to exhibit cultural works of participating countries in an effort to further encourage their connections. Capacity building Human resources are the most important part of many production factors. China, Indonesia, New Zealand, the United Arab Emirates and other countries have complementary human resources. Through global human resource capacity building, we encourage the development and strengthening of the skills, intuition, practical capacity and resources needed by organizations and societies to survive, adapt and prosper in a rapidly evolving society. We hope to strengthen the interconnection of human resources around the world and guide the society to actively learn how to solve problems in the current globalized context and bring about comprehensive and sustainable development.
