It is named after former Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike and located in a suburb of Negombo, 32.5 kilometres (20+1km;4 miles) north of the historical and commercial center of the nation, Columbus. It is operated by Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd and acts as hub of SriLankan Airlines, the Sri Lankan national carrier, and the national carrier Cinnamon Air. The other airport that serves the city of Colombo is Ratmalana International Airport, which serves primarily national destinations. SriLankan Airlines has its main base at the internal area of CMB Terminal departments Apron view on the apron from the inside. History The airport began as Royal Air Force airport in 1944 during World War II, the Black RAF station. In the 1957, Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike removed all British military airports from Ceylon (Sri Lanka), and the airfield was handed over to the Royal Ceylon Air Force (RCyAF) and renamed Katunayake; Part of it remains a military aviation field. In the 1964's Anil Moonenenghe, Minister of Communications, began the construction of a new international airport to replace Ratmalana with Canadian aid. The airport was completed in the 1967 and Air Ceylon, the national carrier, began international operations from it using a Hawker Siddeley Trident and a British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) British Aircraft Corporation (BAC) VC-10. The name was given by former SWRD Prime Minister Bandaranaike in the 1970s. It was renamed Katunayake International Airport in 1977, but was changed to Bandaranaike International Airport in 1995. [3] At the 7th of November 1971, the first Boeing 747 will land at the airport. The Boeing 747-200B was operated by Condor, which carried German tourists from Frankfurt. In the early 1990s the location of the airport runway (04/22) was moved north and the old runway was transformed into a taxi for landing and arrival of planes. I airport expansion projects were recently started at the airport as part of the Phase 1 expansion project, Phase II. November 2005. It is proposed to build a new terminal with eight additional gates under Phase II of the Phase II expansion project. The construction of the new Phase II, the Phase II expansion project is expected to start in April 2017 and should be completed by 2020. As of 7 May 2007, the Government of Sri Lanka moved military aviation operations out of the space adjacent to SLAF Hingurakoda Airport, thus paving the way for the expansion of civilian operations. As part of the airport’s development program, a passenger rail service between the airport and the Colombo Secretariat Station was launched in June 2010. [4] The airport is used by the Emirates as an alternative emergency airport for its Airbus A380 aircraft. [4][5] On January 9, 2012, an Airbus A380-800 operated by Emirates landed at Bandaranaike International Airport. This was the first time in history that an Airbus A380 had landed at an airport in Sri Lanka. SriLankan Airlines is the largest airline operating at the airport, with a fleet of 27 Airbus aircraft. [7] In the past, British Airways, KLM, LTU International, Royal Jordanian Airlines and Swissair were the airlines that previously served Colombo for many years. Bandaranaike International Airport Terminals (airport code CMB[8]) in Katunayake, Sri Lanka, is 32.5 kilometers north of the capital of the island of Colombo. Thirty-seven (37) airlines currently serve more than ten.79 million annual passengers. The airport has three passenger terminals. Terminal 1 is the current international terminal, built in 1967. Terminal 2 is the new international terminal, which should be completed in 2019. Terminal 3 is the new internal terminal, opened in November 2012. Terminal 1 opened in 1967 and is the oldest and largest terminal of the airport. It’s got 12 doors. arrival and departure areas are separated horizontally. All international flights currently use this terminal, until Terminal 2 opens in 2019. the terminal consists of a main terminal building directly connected to a single building housing all the doors. Once past security, passengers pass through the long, armrest-shaped door housing 6⢠128;. On the top level of this room, there are two lounges. In the main body of the terminal there is the Serendib Lounge of SriLankan Airlines and the Palm Spirit lounge. This area has duty-free shops, a tea shop, a cafeteria, a smoking room and day showers. Terminal 2 is scheduled to open in 2019. It is planned to have eight doors, with vertically separated arrival and departure areas. It is proposed to build a new terminal with eight additional gates under Phase II of the Phase II expansion project. The construction of the new Phase II, the expansion project of Phase II was started in April 2017 and is expected to be completed in 2019. A new pier with eight boarding gates and fourteen passenger boarding decks, with an additional gate including two boarding decks for Airbus A380, will be included in the proposed new development. Terminal 3 opened in November 2012 and manages all domestic flights. The arrival and departure areas are separated horizontally. [10] The Cargo Terminal opened in October 2009 and manages all cargo flights. The arrival and departure areas are separated horizontally. Aprons Apron Alpha: This is the oldest apron in existence at the airport. It has nine parking bays, including five remote parking bays and four boarding decks equipped bays. It is capable of handling 4 Boeing 747 and 5 Airbus A330-200 aircraft simultaneously. Apron Bravo: It has eight parking bays, including four remote parking bays and four boarding decks equipped bays. It can handle all eight large bodies such as Airbus A330, Airbus A340, Boeing 777 or Boeing 747 simultaneously. The four remote bays will be converted to 4 A380 capable boarding bridges under the phase II development project. Apron Charlie: It has eight bays of parking, all are currently remote bays. Can handle any 8- wide-body like an Airbus Airbus Airbus A340, Boeing 777 or Boeing 747 immediately. The remote bays will be converted into 8 Airbus A380 capable boarding decks under the Phase II development project. It is the only apron capable of handling the Airbus A380-800. It was used by Emirates Airbus A380s three times. Apron Delta: It has four parking bays capable of handling small-body aircraft. Apron Echo: is currently[when?] under construction, will have 17 parking spaces. Bandaranaike International Airport has only one runway (04/22), with an asphalt surface. The take-off and landing distances are 3,441à ̈ 160m and 3,350à ̈ 160m respectively. [11] In addition, Phase II of the BIA expansion project is to have a second track, also able to accommodate the A380, with another roller towards the second track. Frequencies available Bandaranaike International Airport Approach – 132.4Mhz Bandaranaike International Airport Tower – 118.7Mhz Expansion projects The airport is re-emerging its runway. Future projects include a second runway to support the Airbus A380, eight additional passenger doors, an internal terminal, a five-storey car park and a five-star hotel near the airport. Construction of the new approach channels to the airport will begin in April 2017 and are expected to be completed by 2020. [12] The proposed new complex will include a new two-storey passenger terminal building, which separates arrivals and departures vertically, a new pier with eight boarding gates and fourteen passenger boarding decks, with a dedicated gate including two passenger boarding decks for the new Airbus A380. There would also be a remote apron and an additional nine parking lots to facilitate the movement of air traffic. In the Katunayake BOI Zone there would be a duty-free shopping mall to attract more business visitors to Sri Lanka. The mall must be adjacent to the arrival terminal and connected a celestial bridge. The second phase will involve the acquisition of 600 600 On public land, the construction of a runway to accommodate new generation aircraft, an aircraft repair and maintenance centre, an arrival and departure terminal, a shopping arcade, an airport freight complex with rail links and a multistory car park. As part of the development project Phase II, Phase 2, a second passenger terminal will be built and a necessary utility for the second terminal will be built. Work will also be carried out to expand the terminal, the aerial parking apron and the public utilities. The existing airport terminal will be converted into a national and regional terminal when the new complex is ready. There will also be built a two-level passenger terminal with physically separate arrivals and departures as found in most modern airports. A quick exit to Colombo Road â Katunayake will be provided directly from the terminal. Stage 2 itself is to be implemented in two stages, with the first stage expected to be completed by 2020. The project was divided into 2 packages and the offer was completed for both packages.
