Association of Occupational Therapists of Ireland AOTI launch LGBT+ Guidelines for Occupational Therapists The Association of Occupational Therapists of Ireland (AOTI) recently launched LGBT+ Awareness and Good Practice Guidelines for Occupational Therapists to promote the highest standards of practice when providing an Occupational Therapy service to clients who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. LGBT+ is used in the guidelines to capture everything on the gender and sexuality spectrum that letters and words cannot yet describe. The guidelines were written by occupational therapists: Dr Mark Brown, Jane Freeman, Vanessa Jordan, Niall Kirrane and Odhrán Allen, and have 3 objectives: 1. To clarify language, concepts and good practice principles to enable occupational therapists to provide an LGBT+ inclusive service, 2. To assist occupational therapists to understand how particular life experiences (such as discrimination and fear of coming out) can affect some LGBT+ people’s physical and mental health, as well as their occupational and social identities, 3. To describe specific Occupational Therapy practices which enable LGBT+ clients’ occupations and social engagement, and support their full occupational identity. Underpinning these new guidelines are the following core principles: • Sexual orientation and gender identity are core parts of everyone’s sense of self and therefore are key considerations in the person-centred practice of every occupational therapist. • AOTI see lesbian, gay, bisexual, asexual and pansexual identities as part of the spectrum of normal human sexual orientation. • AOTI see transgender and non-binary identities as part of the spectrum of normal human gender identity. • There is an ethical requirement for occupational therapists to respect and affirm the identity of LGBT+ individuals and to provide them with appropriate support. • With the right support, LGBT+ people, like all people, can thrive and flourish, and live satisfying and meaningful lives. News from Member Organisations – June 2019 9 | 21
AOTI see these new guidelines as a valuable resource for Occupational Therapy practitioners, managers, educators, researchers, policy- makers and students to make our profession a fully LGBT+ inclusive one. Given the client-centred and holistic nature of our profession, occupational therapists have huge potential to be leaders within their own services and to become advocates of LGBT+ inclusive practice. AOTI hopes that these good practice guidelines will inspire and empower occupational therapists to do so. AOTI encourages other WFOT Member Associations to reflect on how their members can be supported to be true to the ethos of our profession by being LGBT+ inclusive in their practice. A copy of the LGBT+ Awareness and Good Practice Guidelines for Occupational Therapists can be downloaded from the AOTI website here: http://bit.ly/AOTILGBT Korean Association of Occupational Therapists A ceremony of the 50th year of occupational therapy in Korea was held on April 3 rd in Seoul with WFOT executive management team, Korean occupational therapists, government officials, senators, and presidents of 7 other health care professionals. WFOT President, Marilyn Pattison, congratulated achievement of the KAOT in the provision of services in healthcare and presented awards to recognize the work of supporting occupational therapy and disability rights. There are 23 WFOT approved occupational therapy education programs out of 60 OT programs in Korea with more to follow in 2019. WFOT President, Marilyn Pattison presented WFOT certificates to six recently approved programs. A special award, Marion Current Award, was established to commemorate Professor Marion Current and celebrate the 50th year of occupational therapy in Korea. This award is to remember Marion Current, her Korean name is Ae-Ryun Ku, who started occupational therapy education in Korea. Professor Current first came to Korea in 1959 as a Canadian missionary, and for 37 years, she lived a life of commitment and sacrifice as an occupational therapist, physio-therapist, educator, and a missionary. As a faculty of Yonsei University, she bridged Korea to many countries such as Canada and US to train many Korean OTs as educators and researchers, and actively supported KAOT to be a full member organization of WFOT. She was also an activist against the Korean dictatorship and human rights in the 70s. Moving back to Canada in 1997 after her retirement, she worked as a human rights activist for North Korea and people with disabilities. When she passed away on November 18th 2013, she donated her possessions to Yonsei University and other organizations and her will was to use them for the improvement of educational environment for students with disabilities and scholarships for students who are in need. Celebrating 50 years of occupational therapy in Korea, the KAOT initiated to commemorate the great deed of Professor Marion Current recognizing one person every year who have advanced Korean occupational therapy in various clinical, policy, research and educational areas. This year Dr. Eun-Young Yoo was the first recipient of the award for her contribution to advancing occupational therapy academically and clinically as a devoted editor-in-chief of Korean Journal of Occupational Therapy for nearly 20 years. During this conference 13 specialist lectures were held, read more about our Specialist standards for Swedish Occupational Therapists. The key note speakers were Lena Borell and Birgitta Bernspång that were awarded Honorary awards and made a retrospective reflection on the history of Occupational Therapy. Other key note speaker was the Minister of Health and Social Affairs Lena Hallengren. Code of Ethics for Occupational Therapists in Sweden was developed in 1992 and has been revised on several occasions, most recently for The General Assembly in 2018. The Code of Ethical for Occupational Therapists is one of the union's most important documents. It provides guidance by specifying obligations that the occupational therapist must relate to in the profession. News from Member Organisations – June 2019 16 | 21
The biggest changes in this revised version are that the profession's objectives, basic assumptions and tasks have been given another writing that better harmonises with other important documents such as the WFOT's Code of Ethics. In addition, the ethical obligations have been given a clearer writing and ethical obligations towards students have been added. What does digital competence mean for occupational therapists? At the General Assembly, the council also decided on a revision of Competence Descriptions for Occupational Therapists. One novelty is that they now include digital skills for occupational therapists. In the Swedish Occupational Therapists' vision, knowledge-based Occupational Therapy is a recognized path to an equal and sustainable society. In the union's endeavour to realize the vision, it is important that we can describe and communicate the competence that the profession possesses. Therefore, The Swedish Association Occupational Therapists have developed competence descriptions for occupational therapists. The updated Descriptions for Occupational Therapists will be published in June, you will find it on our English pages. New online-course in English In May 2019, The Swedish Association of Occupational Therapists launched their first online course in English.
