Spring 2020 Issue No: 657 #EACHFOREQUAL - CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY CYCLE NEW Q&A DRUG GAISCE SAFETY FOR LEADERS AWARENESS ADVENTURES
From the Chief Commissioner Spring 2020 Issue No: 657 Hi all, In December 2019 I had the pleasure of taking over the role of Chief Commissioner from Helen Concannon. I was presented with a Gold Trefoil pin and I am honoured to have this valuable piece of our history and tradition entrusted into my care. My leadership journey takes on a new path and will be shared and supported by many amazing women along the way, just as you are supported on your leadership journey in your Units on a weekly basis. The role of the Chief Commissioner involves ensuring the strategic direction of the organisation and that we are meeting the relevant standards in the charity and youth work sectors. UNIT SPOTLIGHTS Unit Spotlights If your Unit has done something interesting that you would like spotlighted, drop an email to communications.igg@gmail.com with a couple of lines about what you did and a good quality photo or two with the girls in full uniform. We love to hear what impact the activity or trip had on the girls so quotes or pieces written by the girls are always welcome. You never know, your contribution could make it into the next Trefoil News or the ‘Latest News’ section of the IGG website. To check out previous blogs, follow this link https://bit.ly/2OPlu1W. Here are some Spotlights we received since the last Trefoil News Clogherhead Brownies and Guides Clogherhead Units embarked on selling cookies this year and, instead of selling to family and friends as they had done before, they decided to sell locally. The girls came up with a few locations as possibilities including school, the Credit Union and the local shop. We had plans to sell on Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday mornings. The roster was done out and the girls were excited about selling. However, the Friday evening sales went so well, they started running out of cookies! There was a last minute scramble to fellow Leaders in Drogheda to 'borrow' cookies so they would have something for the girls to sell the next day. Sales on the Saturday morning also went better than expected and more cookies had to be sourced! By Sunday morning they had almost sold out. The Ladybirds sold the remaining packets at their meeting. Overall it was a positive experience for the girls. It was great to see their confidence grow the more they interacted with the public. They counted the money and used the profits towards their trip to the Gaiety panto. Tivoli Guides Tivoli Guides sold cookies at the Design Centre in Dún Laoghaire (which is owned by a past Tivoli Guide) in aid of two charities. They broke up some biscuits as tasters to encourage sales. The older Guides were asked to nominate a charity and the rest of the Guides voted for which they would like to support. The vote was very close so they decided to choose two charities: a) The Alzheimer Society - one of the Guides had experience of the support they give to families as she had two grandparents die this year that had Alzheimer’s and b) The National Association for Housing for the Visually Impaired (NAHVI) - two of the Guides have a sister who is visually impaired, has an intellectual disability and is living in housing provided by NAHVI.
