Brito 505-983-4430 larrybrito@hotmail.com State Secretary Bernard Ela 505-331-4504 (Cell) elafamily@hotmail.com State Treasurer Sam Serna 505-503-9013 samuelserna@msn.com State Advocate Chuck DuBois 5 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD PRAY THE ROSARY 505 400-3917 by Andrew Fowler crd007@aol.com State Warden Anthony Salazar October has many traditions. There’s post-season baseball, tailgating at football games, apple 505-319-3233 picking and, of course, Halloween. But most importantly, there is the Rosary. Salazaranthony79@yahoo.com As decreed by Pope Leo XIII, October is the Month of the Rosary. For Knights of Columbus, this Immediate Past State Deputy has a special significance. When a man joins our Order, he receives a Knights of Columbus rosary – John Brault at 1.9 million members, that’s a lot of rosaries. And praying the rosary is an activity that our 505-453-0158 jrbrault0@gmail.com members do communally as part of council life. Vice Supreme Master According to Catholic traditions, St. Dominic was given the rosary by the Blessed Virgin Mary in Richard Espinosa 1214 in the Monastery of Prouille. 505-796-2280 coachespi@yahoo.com Since then, it has become one of the Catholic Church’s powerful tools of prayer. But why pray the Rosary? Here are 5 of them. One for every decade. District Master New Mexico 1) The Blessed Mother gave us 15 Promises if we prayed the rosary Clinton Deeley 575-749-3014 Alanus de Rupe, a 15th century Dominican preacher, claimed that he was visited by the Blessed deeleyx4@msn.com Virgin Mary, who gave 15 promises to Christians who prayed the rosary, including the Blessed Mother’s special protection and greatest graces, the light of God, a powerful armor against Hell, as Insurance General Agent well as dominance over misfortune. James McCabe 2) To obtain world peace 505-830-5770 505-830-5769 (Fax) “Continue praying the rosary every day in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary, in order to obtain peace james.mccabe@kofc.org for the world and the end of the war, because only She can help you.” This is what Our Lady of Fatima said to three children, Lucia dos Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto in June 1917. The Blessed Mother visited the children in Fatima, Portugal from May 13, 1917 to October 13, 1917 a period that culminated in the Miracle of the Sun, otherwise known as, “The Day the Sun Danced.” 2
3) Time to reflect on the Gospel mysteries The rosary consists of the Apostle’s Creed, the Hail Mary, the Our Father, the Glory Be, along with other prayers. However, in between each decade, we are invited to reflect on the Mysteries of the Gospel: Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, and Luminous. Become a Knight In these mysteries, we rediscover, examine, and ponder the stories from the Gospel, and discover the Join Online real meaning of those events in the silence of our hearts. 4) Spiritual healing And speaking of silence, another purpose of praying the rosary is to allow the repetition of the prayers enter into the silence of our hearts, where Christ’s spirit dwells. CLICK It is in that silence, we become more connected with the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Not only that, but Jesus reveals to us that “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, SUPREME WEBSITE and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind.” WWW.KOFC.ORG But to do so, we must make time for Him. The rosary is the perfect way to make time to connect with God, and for spiritual healing. Take 15 minutes a day to be one with Him. STATE WEBSITE 5) Prayer works! WWW.NMKOFC.ORG The power of prayer is unspeakable. The answer to every prayer is a miracle, in and of itself. It is STATE DIRECTORIES our lifeline to Him, to our souls, and to each other. But the reason why October is the Month of the Holy Rosary is due to the power of prayer. RESOURCES/FORMS In 1571, Pope St. Pius V organized a group of Christian forces, known as the Holy League, in defense of an imminent invasion by the Ottoman Empire. Before a battle with the Ottoman fleet in the Gulf of Patras, in the Ionian Sea, the pope called on all of Europe to pray the rosary for victory. SAFE ENVIRONMENT These prayers was answered, with the Holy League defeating the much larger Ottoman forces on October 7 at the battle of Lepanto. FRATERNAL TRAINING To commemorate the victory, Pius V established the feast day of “Our Lady of Victory” – also known as Our Lady of the Rosary. KNIGHTLINE EDITIONS Hundreds of years after the battle of Lepanto, Pope Francis is now calling all Catholics this month to pray the rosary daily to “protect the Church from the devil, who always seeks to separate us from God and from each other.” So, in solidarity, let us pray to our most gracious advocate, the Blessed Mother, for peace throughout the world, and within our souls. It only takes 15 minutes. WWW.KOFC.ORG/EN/NEWS/RELEASES/OCTOBER-IS-THE-ROSARY-MONTH.HTML 3

State Deputy Daniel Vigil My Brothers All, Knights of Columbus, building a culture of life in New Mexico, from conception until natural death. “As Knights we seek nothing less than the transformation of today’s culture into a new culture of life. And the foundation of this effort must be the bedrock of the inviolable dignity of human life at every stage and the realization, that in the great family the Lord intends for his people, we are all our brother’s keeper.” kofc.org Throughout New Mexico, Knights continues to support a culture of life through prayers and through our many programs; the ultrasound initiative, coats for kids, community food drives, youth activities, marches for life, novenas for life, support of pregnancy care centers, support of Special Olympics, the Silver Rose pilgrimage for a culture of life, support for Habitat for Humanity, support of the domestic church, our families and more all lay witness to this fact. All achievements that we should be proud of, yet there is still much work to be done in building a culture of life in NM, work which requires many hands. The recent attack on the Hyde amendment in congress (which has prevented the use of public funds to subsidize abortions) and the passage of anti-life bills in the NM legislature have highlighted the need for us to be vigilant in the building of a culture of light and life here in New Mexico. Without our willingness to stand for life, in our prayers, in our words and in our deeds, we will continue to lose ground. With our mission in mind, I encourage you to begin with prayer for a culture of life and continue building your programs at the council level, knowing that with each event you are planting the seeds of dignity of human life. Additionally, reach out to the Catholic men in your community and invite them to strengthen their faith and grow closer to God; invite them to evangelize the truth so that all may know not only by our words but by our actions; invite them to join us in our mission to transform today’s culture into a new culture of life through acts of charity, unity, and fraternity. Vivat Jesus! Daniel S. Vigil State Deputy NM Knights of Columbus 6
State Secretary Bernard Ela October 2021 My Dear Brother Knights: October 12th is of course Columbus Day, which was declared a federal holiday in 1937 following the strong urging of the Knights of Columbus. Christopher Columbus—why the namesake of our Order The genius of Blessed Michael McGivney is evident in naming our Order after Christopher Columbus in 1882: - First, Columbus brought our Holy Catholic faith into the New World; for example, naming the island he landed on, San Salvador in honor of Jesus Christ the Savior of the World - Second, at the height of the nativists (anti-immigration) and anti-Catholic sentiment in the U.S. at the time, Columbus was one of the few Catholics universally considered a hero of American history - And third, Blessed Michael McGivney wished to show that faithful Catholics can also be patriotic American citizens The strong Catholic identity of Columbus Day led the Ku Klux Klan to denounce the holiday, disparage Columbus, claiming that he was not a hero, but rather just another foreign conqueror who was guilty of genocide, slavery, and oppression. In today’s cancel culture, do these repeated claims sound all too familiar? Rather than succumb to the cancel culture pressure, let’s defend our Catholic heritage and let’s pray for greater civility, peace, and understanding between all peoples, asking the intercession of our Blessed Mother, Patroness of the Americas, and the namesake of Columbus’ lead ship on that historic voyage to the New World. Blessed Michael McGivney—Pray for us! Bernard Ela State Secretary (Excerpts from Resolution in Honor of Christopher Columbus, adopted at the 139 th Supreme Convention 2021) 7
State Treasurer Sam Serna Hello Brother Knights, We just finished the first quarter of the Fraternal Year. I hope the COVID Recovery Program is working for your Council as well as your Parish. The second quarter begins with Columbus Day and we will begin our preparations for the Thanksgiving, Advent and the Christmas Season as well. As part of my Hispanic Council Growth Coordinator duties, I’m pleased to announce that we’re making progress with the Hispanic Councils around the state. Brother Rudy Archibeque and I met with Fr. Francisco at Mission San Juan Diego, in Meadow Lake (Council 15690), where he is very supportive of the Knights. Hispanic Development Field Coordinator Brother Marty Yzaguirre and I met with Fr. Lalo from San Jose Church in Albuquerque (Consejo San Jose Council 11964). He offered us a 30minute slot at the Men’s Retreat on September 12, at 10:30 am. State Secretary Bernard Ela joined me at the Men’s retreat. The theme of the retreat was regarding “Service”. The first question I made to the group of men, was “who remembered the 2nd reading”. I quoted the beginning of the 2nd reading (James 2:14) “What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone says he has faith but does not have works?” I spoke about Into the Breach and Faith in Action. I explained the four categories, Faith, Family, Community and Life. As I explained the Faith category, I spoke how we support vocations. I used State Secretary Bernard, who was present, as an example of vocations and how he will become a Deacon in less than 2 years and hopefully serve as our State Deputy and as a Deacon. What a Blessing for the New Mexico State Council. In the end, we obtained 35 names out of the 65 men in attendance. On Monday, September 13, I stopped in Hatch and met briefly with Fr. Ivan Torres, about reactivating Council 15152. Later that evening, Council 14949 in Anthony had a meeting, which I attended. They had a quorum and the first order of business was the election of Council Officers. We are hoping to get them installed as soon as possible. At this point the Chaparral Council will be a Round Table until we meet with the parish priest and hold church drives to re-activate it. Brother Rudy and Brother Bernard were out in the field and came across a point of contact for St. Francis Xavier in Albuquerque as well. State Warden Anthony supplied me with Fr. Anuta’s phone number, from Holy Ghost (Council 151830). At this point, the 2nd half of our Fraternal Year is looking very optimistic in the Hispanic Council Growth. It may seem a slow start, but as I’ve mentioned to our State Deputy, we can’t have too many irons in the fire. We have to dedicate enough time to get each council going, and make sure we “Leave No Neighbor Behind”. Reflecting on the second reading of the 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time (James 2:14), ask yourselves “What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone says he has faith but does not have works?” Our pastors need us more than ever. Whether it’s as simple as being a crossing guard for Mass and/or religious education, ushering, helping at missions, catechists, etc. I wish you a successful second quarter of the year. Vivat Jesus! Samuel Serna State Treasurer / Hispanic Council Growth Coordinator 8
State Advocate Chuck DuBois My Brothers All. The month was a very busy month for the State Officers. We were able to travel to Silver City for our Officers meeting, which was in person and virtual. Marcos Quinteros the Grand Knight of the Council hosted this event. After the State Officers meeting, we broke into two groups and one attended St. Francis Newman Center for Mass, and the other group went to Saint Vincent De Paul Church for Mass. After Mass on Saturday and Sunday, we did some recruiting. On Sunday, at 10:30 at Saint Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, we held a Charity, Unity and Fraternity Degree. The degree was conducted by the State Officers. Two Priests and two young men were brought into the Brotherhood. What a great weekend in Silver City, thank you Marcos for doing such a good job. Chuck R. DuBois State Advocate N.M. State council State Warden Anthony Salazar My brothers all and family members, Fall is upon us the leaves are fixing to start changing colors, we are so Blessed to live in such a beautiful state. As an officer in the New Mexico State Council, I am honored to be traveling around the state visiting councils with other state officers attending meetings, masses and assisting with delta church drives it is so inspirational to see the enthusiasm that brothers around the state have as they get back into the swing of things. This past weekend a few of the state officers, our District Master, 4th degree members and a few knights on bikes joined our Worthy State Deputy in participating in the state fair parade again an honor to be representing the knights. As always if I can be of assistance in any way, please reach out to me. Anthony Salazar Warden NMSC Central N.M. Membership Director 9
Membership Director Jimmy Beasley October 2021 Christopher Columbus was one of the greatest and most celebrated explorers of all time. In 1492, his voyage to the New World expanded the view of the world and forever linked Europe with the Americas. His discovery and the age of exploration that followed changed the course of history. Columbus Day falls on the second Monday of October and marks the anniversary his arrival to America on October 12, 1492. So, why would Fr. Michael McGivney choose Columbus as the namesake for his new benefit society? Why him instead of a Saint? By accidently landing in the Americas, Christopher Columbus brought with him our Catholic Church through his faith and courage. In a time when anti-Catholic and anti- immigration hostilities ran strong, Fr. McGivney understood that by using Columbus as the Order’s namesake, there was a place for all Catholics and immigrants within the American society. Both Christopher Columbus and Fr. McGivney had great faith and courage in their paving the way that developed into the diverse society we have today. Recruiting new member families into your council also takes faith and courage as well. It’s not at the level of our founder or namesake but, for many of us it can be a stressful and uncomfortable moment. How do I begin a conversation with this guy about joining the Knights? What if he says “No” or “I don’t have the time”? What I try to do while recruiting is to simply pray for the Holy Spirit to give me the words to say and… a little push to open up the conversation with that prospect. I also pray that he and his family are open to getting more information about the Knights. That’s pretty much it. Some will, some won’t, and some will later if we just keep on planting those seeds. October is a great time for each of us to grow in our own faith and courage while inviting men and their families to join our council. New member families are always a blessing to the council, parish, and community. By recruiting new members into the Order, we are honoring Blessed Michael McGivney’s vision for the Knight of Columbus. We are also celebrating our Order’s namesake, Christopher Columbus and his faith and courage of coming to this New World. Let’s continue to recognize his accomplishments by safeguarding our very own “Keep Columbus in Columbus Day”. Who’s in? 10

Program Director Anthony Romero My Brothers All I recently had the privilege of helping out at the local Food Depot, which serves Central, and Eastern New Mexico. There were several volunteers, and I was assigned to the Kids Corner area, which was responsible for packing after school meals. At first, I thought this was a once a week event, only to find out this happens every day of the week. This day, we packaged 906 after school meals. I was happy that such and organization exists which feeds our youth, but at the same time, I was saddened to know that such a demand for after school meals exists. My Brothers, we are a PRO-LIFE organization. We support the unborn from conception to a person’s natural death, but we sometimes forget of what is in-between. Our youth, from toddlers to High schoolers need our support and guidance. Every morning I pick up the local newspaper and read about the shootings that take place, and the sad part is that a lot of these are now being perpetuated by kids as young as 12. I look at the obituaries and see beautiful young faces, which are no longer with us because of drugs or violence. When did our society change which has become desensitized to this? What ever happened to "It takes a Village to raise our Youth"? We can still make a difference Brothers. This is why we have our programs. Our Community, Family and Youth events bring together the family unit and shows them, that there are people out there who care. Our Faith and Life Programs show that we respect life and that with Christ in our daily lives, great things can be accomplished. Our Coats for Kids Program will be starting soon. Have you ordered your kits? Have you ordered your Coats? This is a featured program and counts for two credits towards the Columbian Award. Coordinate with your local school counselors and gauge the need, you will be sadly surprised at the amount of children who through winter without a warm coat. Advertise your event. Order your posters from Supreme. Announce it on your Church Bulletins; obtain your banners from your District Deputies. I ask, No I BEG, every council to take an active role in helping our youth. Participate at your local food distribution centers. See firsthand the need that has always been there, but has doubled due to the pandemic. Will things ever get back to normal? I hope not, we need to care, we need to make a difference, we need to show the parish and our communities that with a little effort, a positive impact is made is the lives of our youth. We do not want to go back the old attitude of letting others take care of it, we cannot be bothered. Many food pantries are not accepting food items due to covid, but we can help financially. Set aside part of your fundraising proceeds to feed our youth. To clothe our youth. To let them know, that we care. My family and I pray that you and your families are safe. May God continue to Bless you for everything that you do. You do make a difference. VIVAT JESU! Anthony L. Romero NM State Program Director Knights of Columbus 505-231-4080 12

Jim McCabe, General Agent Knights of Columbus Insurance Jim McCabe Agency – Serving New Mexico & El Paso Every sport, every enterprise, every organization, every industry has their top reps, their all- stars and their most valuable players. They are the ones who give their all 100% of the time; they represent their companies masterfully, they get customers and retain them, they provide extraordinary service, they inspire their colleagues to reach heights no one thought attainable. Well, the insurance industry is no different and I’d like to take a few minutes to tell you about that. The life insurance industry has an organization called the Million Dollar Round Table or MDRT. It is an international organization that was founded in 1927 and it recognizes agents for their commitment to excellence, professionalism, outstanding service and the highest ethical standards. In our industry, these are the hallmarks of the all-stars. “Big deal!” you might say. “What’s so special about that?” Let me tell you what is so special about membership in the Million Dollar Round Table. Across the industry in a normal year, only about 2% of agents meet the stringent requirements to become an MDRT member. We’ve had a great track record at the KofC over the last four or five years where 10 or 11% of our agents qualified for membership. That’s about five times the industry average…pretty impressive! But last year was anything but normal and we had an anything but normal group qualify for MDRT: 38%, yes, you read correctly, 38% of our field force qualified for membership in this prestigious organization. There were only three other companies in the USA that had a higher number of qualifiers, but none came close to our percentage of qualifiers. Imagine that, the KofC beat out some of the biggest names in the industry. What’s all this mean to you? This kind of result doesn’t come about by accident. It demonstrates the Knights of Columbus commitment to give you, our members and your families, a highly trained, qualified and committed financial services professional. My job is to use my skill and knowledge to make sure you understand the issues of protecting your family from the unknown. Let’s get together soon…and I’ll tell you about my Million Dollar Round Table journey. Vivat Jesus! 15

From First Lady Martina Hi, Hope this message finds you well. As I remember 911, it seems like it happened yesterday. Driving my daughter Jade to preschool and when we walked into the facility some of the teachers were talking about what was happening the first tower was hit. This still did not register in my brain, I was late for work, so I kissed Jade goodbye and went on my way. Arrived at work the second tower was hit and then the pentagon and flight 93. Everyone was astonished and shocked that this was happening in the greatest country in the world. Our supervisor told us to get back to work or take vacation time and go home so I did that picked up my two children and went to be with my family. I don’t think my supervisor was being unsympathetic he just did not know how to handle the situation. So here we are 20 Years later sending workers home because they don’t want to take the vaccine, you can’t go shopping without a mask and abortion is still legal. Please pray for us all and God Bless Us. First Lady Martina Vigil 18

OCTOBER 2021 Supreme Chaplain's Monthly Challenge One of the scribes came to Jesus and asked him, “Which is the first of all the commandments?” Jesus replied, “The first is this: ‘Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’” (Gospel for Oct. 31, Mk 12:28b-30) Among religions in the ancient world, Judaism stood out in its monotheism, the belief in one all- powerful God. The Greatest Commandment, which Christ gives us here, follows from this truth. The forces of Satan oppose God, but God is infinitely more powerful. The battle cry of St. Michael when he defeated Satan and his rebel angels was “Who is like unto God?” It is, of course, a rhetorical question. There is only one God; may we love him completely and totally. Challenge by Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William E. Lori: This month, I challenge you to begin and end each day by praying the Prayer to St. Michael. Questions for Reflection: What does it mean — in concrete terms — to love God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength? Do you use the Lord’s name in vain? Do you show proper reverence for God in your thoughts, words and actions each day? 34

Saint John Paul’s Prayer For Peace Lord Jesus Christ, who is called the Prince of Peace, who are yourself our peace and reconciliation, who so often said, "Peace to you," grant us peace. Make all men and women witnesses of truth, justice, and brotherly love. Banish from their hearts whatever might endanger peace. Enlighten our rulers that they may guarantee and defend the great gift of peace. May all peoples on the earth become as brothers and sisters. May longed for peace blossom forth and reign always over us all. - Pope John Paul II “Most important, we were all given a Rosary at our First Degree Exemplification, NOW, is the time to pray it daily. Now is the time for us to Unite as brothers and help each other and our neighbors. Stand up as a Knight, do your part. PRAY often and help others”. Brother Raul Griego, San Felipe Council 14254 42

Knight’s Prayer Our Lady, Queen of the Knights, bless all the activities of our Order. Keep us true to our pledge, to extend the kingship of thy Divine Son on earth. Through Thine intercession, win for us the grace, ever to exemplify in our public and private lives, the virtues that should characterize those especially dedicated to the service of the heavenly court. Make us always aware that as your Knights, we are constantly observed, our faith judged, and our Order appreciated. Accept, O Mary, this renewed pledge of fealty and devotion, of Thy Servants, the Knights of Columbus.
