An amber glow was cast over the spectator’s stand as the 25,000 strong crowd
gathered at The Float @ Marina Bay on our nation’s birthday celebration in
a sea of red, white and jubilant smiles. The theme for this year’s parade was
#OneNationTogether – a rallying call to unite all Singaporeans to stand together and

F or the first time in the National Day Parade (NDP),
the hash symbol (#) was incorporated into the
NDP theme through the image of the four interlocking
hands, which originated from the first Singapore ten-
dollar note minted, to symbolize unity and home.

High up above in the clouds, a Super Puma helicopter
hovered over the Floating Platform, before the Red
Lions leapt off into a free-falling formation to greet the
anticipating crowd, 10,000 feet below. The Red Lions,
a crowd favourite, returned after a two-year hiatus to
tumultuous applause.

Soon, a thunderous roar heralded the arrival of the
F-15SG fighter aircraft as part of the Dynamic Defence
Display (D3) segment. The D3 segment is an integrated
showcase by Singapore’s security forces. The first part
of the D3 segment saw the Singapore Armed Forces
unleash their array of military assets. The F-15SG
fighter aircraft performed death-defying stunts, such
as the Shackle and the High-G Combat Turn, thrilling
the crowd. Upon its departure, two Apache attack
helicopters surged through the sheet of clouds and
hovered just above the Floating Platform in a show of
the RSAF’s aerial might. These were a lead in for the
Chinook helicopter which released naval divers into
the bay waters as part of the Helocast mission. In total,
this year’s D3 segment featured 500 participants and
more than 50 assets from the Singapore Armed Forces,
Singapore Police Force and Singapore Civil Defence
Force.

An iconic moment of the NDP was the State Flag Flypast. The National Anthem
was sung as the Chinook helicopter flew the State Flag across the audience with
clockwork precision, escorted by two Apache attack helicopters. For the first time,
five F-15SG fighter aircraft delivered the widely anticipated bomb-burst against the
backdrop of the Marina Bay skyline, in a salute to the nation.

NDP 2017 also marked then President Tony Tan Keng Yam’s last parade celebration
as Head-of-State. President Tan inspected the parade contingents as the Reviewing
Officer, before greeting the crowd for the last time.

The second part of the D3 segment commenced with a simulated terrorist attack,
and saw the SAF; the Home Team, consisting of the Singapore Police Force and the
Singapore Civil Defence Force; as well as civilians, responding to combat the threats
    and rescue the hostages.

With that, the show segment began, amidst the backdrop of the night as a dazzling
array of colours illuminated the stage and the bay area. Numerous set pieces were
brought to life by the performers, signifying the nation’s multicultural history
    through vibrant storytelling.

300 unmanned drones were also utilized in creating seven constellations in the
sky, including a Merlion, a heart, and the crescent moon with the five stars. Finally,
a magnificent fireworks display adorned the dusk with showers of multicoloured
sparks as the parade drew to a fiery close, punctuating the sky with the success of yet
    another NDP celebration.

“ The NS50 tribute not only recognised
NSmen, but also recognised the families.
We know that when NSmen go to the
camps to report for duty, it is really the
families helming the home front so they
were also asked to stand up for the salute
    by the parade contingent.

NATIONAL DAY PARADE - Issue No. 147 2017 - MINDEF Singapore
Behind The Scenes
Our airmen and women have gone out of their way to
ensure that NDP 17 was a memorable and meaningful one.
Here are some of the key preparatory events that took
place in the lead up to the actual day.

                 State Flag Preparation
A staple in every NDP celebration, the flying of the
State Flag by the Chinook has become one of the many
features synonymous with our patriotism and identity
as Singaporeans. However, the flag itself, measuring a
whopping 18.2 x 27 m (about the size of a basketball court) The RSAF pioneers in front of the Alouette III helicopter
and weighing 1247 kg, actually takes a fair bit of time to
prepare.

The flypast is flown by personnel from 127 SQN, with
the State Flag prepared at Pulau Sudong by the flag party
prior to the NDP. The yearly flag party consists of 300
personnel supporting the preparation of the State Flag,
which includes the rolling and rigging of the flag. The
whole preparatory process can take up to a few hours,
with the rolling of the flag alone taking two hours.

When asked about the challenges of executing the
demanding task, CO 127 SQN, LTC Liao Minghao said, The RSAF pioneers on board the Chinook helicopter
“What seems simple and like clockwork actually takes a
lot of effort. I think the amount of preparation we put into
this flight helps to reduce a lot of the uncertainty.”

This year, RSAF pioneers who previously participated in
the State Flag Flypast were invited to fly on the Chinook
helicopter to view the Flypast for the NDP-NE Show held
on 15 Jul 17. LTC (RET) Leo Tin Boon, who was one of
the pioneer helicopter pilots to fly in the first-ever State
Flag Flypast, flown by three Alouette III helicopters, said,
"Witnessing the event never fails to bring a great sense of
belonging, a great sense of nostalgia, and a great sense of The State Flag en route to the Floating Platform for the State Flag Flypast
accomplishment and pride that we have built up a capable
set of subsequent leaders and pilots and aircrew who
contimue to look after and provide security and safety for
the nation."

127 SQN personnel rolling up the State Flag before it is attached to the

CAF’s engagement session at
                      NDP-NE Show
In conjunction with the celebration of our nation’s
52nd birthday, the RSAF took the opportunity to thank
its airmen and women for their tireless contributions
towards parade preparations through an engagement
session. Hosted on 8 Jul 17 by CAF, MG Mervyn Tan,
RSAF personnel and their families attended the session
    and joined in the event.

A few RSAF pioneers were also invited to join the
engagement session to share their experiences of their
time serving in the RSAF. MAJ (RET) Benny Boo, who
was an Air Operations Communications Officer, said,
“Back in the 1970s, our skills were very manual based
and we had to use the radar scope and beeping system
to pinpoint the location of the aircraft. Right now, both
our personnel’s skills and our technology have evolved
tremendously, and this has allowed us to maintain our
status as an advanced Air Force.”
                     NSmen Participation
CAF engaging with the RSAF pioneers at the NDP-NE Show
This year, two NSmen pilots, CPT (NS) Valent Tan and
MAJ (NS) Timothy Siah were given the opportunity to
perform the signature bomb-burst manoeuvre alongside
RSAF regulars, as a homage to NS50. This was part of
NDP 2017’s aim to not only pay tribute to NSmen, but
have them participate in the show as well.

When asked about the inclusion of NSmen in the bomb-
burst, CO 149 SQN, SLTC Goh Sim Aik said, “This year,
it is NS50, and it is only right for us to have NSmen
involved in NDP, for them to salute the nation, and this
will also allow Singaporeans to be able to recognize their
contributions and dedication to National Service.”

“Both Timothy and I were excited and honoured to be
                                                                 before their flight
given the opportunity as NSmen to fly alongside a team
of fantastic aircrew as a salute to the nation in the NDP.
I am blessed to have a supportive wife and family who
are as excited as I am about this year’s NDP,” shared
CPT (NS) Tan, who also thanked his friends and 149
SQN personnel for their unwavering support in his
    participation.

This NDP was even more memorable for MAJ (NS) Siah
as his daughter, Miranda, also performed in the Parade
as part of Henry Park Primary School's contingent. She
shared, "I always feel very excited whenever I see our MAJ (NS) Siah with his daughter, Miranda, posing for a photo at the
F-15SGs fly by. I feel especially safe knowing that Daddy Floating Platform
and his friends are protecting the skies of Singapore."

The Heron 1 UAV made its debut this year at the parade
as the SAF’s eyes in the sky. The Heron 1 carried out
surveillance over the Float as part of the D3 simulation
    to a terrorist attack.

COL Lau Boon Ping, COMD UAV Command said, “We
are very glad to be participating in this year’s NDP. This
is the first time the UAV, in particular the Heron 1, is
being featured in the D3 segment of the show. I think it

RSAF - TNI AU Combined Flypast
     Story by Ivan Chua
     Design by Qiyang Sng

This is by far the largest and most complex combined
flypast that the RSAF has conducted with any foreign
air force to date. Celebrating the golden jubilee of both
nations’ bilateral relations, the flypast underscores the
close and long-standing bilateral relationship between
Singapore and Indonesia, and is a strong testament
to the interoperability and mutual understanding
     between the two air forces.

guests awaited the combined “RISING50” flypast from the RSAF and TNI AU, over the Marina Bay Cruise Centre. This flypast
was part of the celebration that marked 50 years of bilateral relations between both countries, with the callsign "RISING50"
signifying "Republic of Indonesia and Singapore 50 years of bilateral relations". It saw ten RSAF F-16 fighter aircraft and ten TNI
AU F-16 fighter aircraft perform two flypast profiles, as well as 5 F-15SG fighter aircraft performing an aerial salute.

The first was an ‘Arrowhead’ formation led by the RSAF, followed by a combined ‘50’ formation. For the latter formation, the TNI AU formed
the digit ‘5’ while the RSAF formed the digit ‘0’. Trailing behind the combined flypast was the aerial salute to both nations, in a bomb-burst
manoeuvre performed by five F-15SG fighter aircraft.

Accompanying the flypast at the Marina Bay Cruise Centre was a joint military band performance by the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Central
Band and the Akademi TNI Drum Band. With exhilarating movements and stunts, both bands wowed the crowd at the Marina Bay Cruise
Centre with their awe-inspiring performance. The SAF Central Band gave a rousing performance of The Lion City Medley, while members from
the Akademi TNI Drum Band twirled their drum sticks and swung their bass drums to the beat of MARS TNI, The Sunny Island, Hari Merdeka
and Taruna Jaya.

                                                                                                                                                     11
Post-Flypast Celebration at Pekanbaru

Following the successful “RISING50” flypast by both air forces
over the Marina South area in Singapore, four RSAF F-16s landed at
Roesmin Nurjadin Air Force Base in Pekanbaru, Indonesia to take
part in a post-flypast celebration with TNI AU. CAF, MG Mervyn Tan,
together with Chief of Staff of TNI AU (KASAU) Air Chief Marshal
(ACM) Hadi Tjahjanto were welcomed with a traditional dance and
     songket by the Indonesian hosts.

On board the RSAF’s Mission Lead flight was MG Tan and CO 140
SQN, LTC Tan Hwee Roy. On the TNI AU Mission Lead flight was
ACM Hadi and CO Skadron Udara 3, LTC Yoga Ambara.

Sharing his thoughts after the combined flypast, MG Tan said, “It is the CAF and KASAU being welcomed with a traditional dance
first time that both our air forces have come together to do a flypast
of this complexity and scale. I think the flypast is really a testament of
the skill as well as the professionalism of our air forces. I would like
to say that, on behalf of the RSAF, it is really our honour to be able to
celebrate this significant event in such a special way together with our
Indonesian friends.” ACM Hadi added, “Today is a special day for us.
This achievement is a reflection of the strong relationship between us
and the high level of trust that is shared between the personnel of the
TNI AU and the RSAF. I believe the military cooperation between the
TNI AU and the RSAF will be everlasting and we will always support
     each other.”

As part of the celebration, personnel from both air forces exchanged
memorabilia such as plaques and commemorative patches to mark

Preparation Phase

In order to pull off a flypast of this scale, preparations for it started
6 months ago with several discussions held between both air forces.
Prior to the flypast on 7 Sep 17, video conference briefings as well
as face-to-face meetups in both countries were conducted between
aircrew from both air forces as part of the combined rehearsals, as
they look to tie up details and communications so as to produce a
seamless flypast on the actual day.

When asked about their thoughts towards the whole experience after
the flypast, LTC Tan said, “Today was an extraordinary experience.
We have been working together (LTC Yoga) as the flight leads for
more than two weeks now, and it all culminated today when we
flew a perfect formation on time over the show centres in Singapore
and Indonesia. It was a fantastic experience for me and I hope that
everybody down on the ground enjoyed the show, because we
certainly enjoyed flying together to give everybody this flypast today.”

LTC Yoga said, “I’m very happy because this is the first time we are
doing a formation with these two countries together, and it’s our first
collaboration. I’m very proud of working together for more than two
weeks (with the RSAF), and this is a new history for Singapore and
Indonesia. We jointly worked together and accomplished the mission
very well.” LTC Ali Sudibyo, Head Secretariat from TNI AU, giving an introductory
brief to RSAF and TNI AU personnel at Pekanbaru

Producing a flypast of such an extent was
definitely no easy feat. The success of the
overall flypast boiled down to the hours that
were sacrificed by the aircrew and personnel
from the RSAF as well as the TNI AU. Their
eye to detail and desire to perfect every single
aspect of the flypast ensured the success of
     the entire celebration.

It was truly a day to remember as both
countries not only celebrated 50 years of
diplomatic relations, but it marked the start
of more years to come as both countries look
forward to strengthening ties and relations.
The RSAF and TNI AU will continuously
strive to achieve deeper relations and
stronger bonds that will see both air forces
grow in scope and depth through their
     bilateral visits and professional exchanges.

31 Aug 17 marked the celebration of RSAF’s 49th Anniversary.
Servicemen and women from HQ RSAF and the six RSAF
Commands gathered at the Air Force Training Command
(AFTC) stadium bright and early for a day of sports and
activities. Exciting cheers with air horns and improvised drums
reverberated throughout the stadium, and the vigour of the
participants truly embodied the fighting spirit of the RSAF.

Amidst the celebrations, Guest-of-Honour, CAF, MG Mervyn
Tan, took the opportunity to thank our airmen and women for
their dedication and contribution. MG Tan also expressed his
appreciation to pioneers of the RSAF, “In celebrating our current
position of strength, we must remember the contributions of
those who served before us. Our achievements today would not
be possible without the sacrifices of the previous generations.
At the same time, we must continue to look ahead and not rest
on our laurels, to set the direction for the future generations.
The best way to honour the hard work of our predecessors is
to not let their efforts go to waste and ensure that our Air Force
continues to be in good standing for generations to come.”

Awards were presented to deserving RSAF personnel by MG
Tan, in recognition of their contributions over the past year.
32 servicemen and women received awards such as the CAF
National Education Excellence Award; CAF CARDINAL Individual

INSIGHT: M-346
ADVANCED JET
TRAINER
Design by Qiyang Sng

On 3 Sep 14, the RSAF marked a milestone
in the transformation of its flying training
when it inaugurated the M-346 Advanced
Jet Trainer (AJT) into 150 SQN at Cazaux
Air Base, France. Minister for Defence, Dr
Ng Eng Hen, officiated at the ceremony,
which saw the drawdown of the A-4SU
Super Skyhawks and the incorporation of
the M-346 AJT in its place. For 17 years, the
A-4SU Super Skyhawks had served as the
dedicated training platform for producing
quality fighter pilots. In line with the RSAF's
vision of being a First Class Air Force,
the RSAF acquired 12 M-346 AJTs and a
ground-based training system to improve
the role of advanced jet training.

The M-346 AJT enhances
pilot training by simulating the
sensors and weapons that are
carried by the RSAF's frontline
fighter aircraft such as the
F-15SG and F-16 C/D fighter
aircraft. It can also simulate
both airborne and ground
threats while in the air through
an advanced on-board training
system. The M-346 AJT is
now able to provide training in
multifaceted scenarios using
the cutting-edge avionics suite,
which was not achievable with
the A-4SU Super Skyhawk.
150 SQN put together an
experienced and well-trained
team of flying instructors and logistics
through which facilitated the crossover to
the M-346 AJT smoothly. To achieve full
training capability, 150 SQN also drew up a
new set of training syllabus and doctrines,
tailored specifically to maximise the
enhanced performance of the M-346 AJT.

Did you know?

1) The M-346 AJT features a state-of-the-art aerodynamic design with a delta wing (a single triangular swept-back wing) to provide
greater agility and control, even at ranges of motion that would cause other aircraft to stall.

2) The M-346 AJT pulls a maximum of up to 8Gs and can reach transonic speeds (close to that of sound) without the use of
afterburners. This is because it is powered by two Honeywell F-124-GA-200 engines, each producing 6,280 pounds of thrust.

3) In Apr 14, an RSAF pilot trainee became the first pilot trainee in the world to fly solo on the M-346 AJT.

                                                                                                                                     19
