FORUM 2018 Preliminary Program NAPC’s FORUM is the only conference of its kind – focused specifically on the concerns and educational needs of preservation commissions, their staff, and surrounding communities. This interactive conference blends traditional educational sessions with roundtable discussions, mobile workshops, and tours. FORUM will be enhanced by the concurrent meeting of the Preserve Iowa Summit, and the National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers. Join your fellow preservationists and connect with the local government staff and commissioners, state government staff, elected officials, preservation consultants, architects, designers and local community leaders. Event Preview Wednesday, July 18 Des Moines Dine-Around Pub Tour Hosted by the Des Moines Rehabbers Club, get a locals-led inside tour of some of Des Moines’ favorite restaurants and watering holes throughout the city. This tour is a perfect way to connect with locals and meet other conference attendees. NAPC Commission Short Course A high level, intensive training for commission members and staff, the NAPC Commission Short Course includes preservation law, preservation incentives, Court Avenue, Des Moines the role of the commissioner, public out- reach, and more. Thursday, July 19 Local and Regional Tours Take full and half-day tours of the city of Des Moines and beyond, including a Frank Lloyd Wright and Prairie School Architecture Tour in Mason City and Preservation in Rural America: Bus Tour to Winterset and Greenfield. West End Salvage Event This ticketed reception and scavenger hunt will be held at West End Salvage, featured on HGTV. West End has everything from furniture to stained glass to doors to tin panels. These one-of-a-kind items are organized by category throughout the four floors of the West End building, a truly Des Moines Social Club unique experience. FORUM 2018 Preliminary Program Friday, July 20 Opening Plenary The Des Moines Scottish Rite Consistory, both an organization and a landmark in Iowa’s capital city, will be the site of the FORUM 2018 Opening Plenary. Built in 1927, the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. As part of the Opening Plenary, Keynote Speaker Mary Means will look at the history of the preservation movement and talk about Scottish Rite Consistory Credit: John Zeller her extensive experience in this ever- evolving field, along with her thoughts on the future. Mary Means is recognized as a national leader in heritage development in the United States. Means is also the visionary who launched the national Main Street program, said by some to have mainstreamed historic preservation. NAPC Commission Excellence Awards Join us as we recognize the excellent work that Commissions do each and every day, all across the country. Come celebrate the Commission Excellence Awards winners and recognize the recipients as part of the Opening Plenary celebration! American Enterprise Reception A short walk from the Opening Plenary and Awards at the Scottish Rite Consistory is the site of the Friday night opening reception at the American Enterprise National Headquarters. The American Enterprise Building is a nationally recog- nized mid-century modern masterpiece by American architect Gordon Bunshaft, a leading proponent of modern design in the mid-twentieth century. Event Preview Saturday, July 21 Climate Impact and Resiliency Luncheon Featured guest Jeff Goodell, an investi- gative journalist and contributing editor to Rolling Stone Magazine and author of The Water Will Come: Rising Seas, Sinking Cities, and the Reshaping of the Civilized World, will discuss how his own interest in sea level rise began with Hurricane Sandy and was strengthened while reporting his story, “Goodbye Miami”, for Rolling Stone Magazine. His talk will address climate change’s potential to massively reshape cities around the world, perhaps much Jeff Goodell sooner than we think. World Food Prize Reception The World Food Prize Hall of Laureates, situated on the Des Moines River, is a splendid venue for the FORUM 2018 Saturday evening reception. This magnificently restored Beaux Arts space celebrates the spirit of giving, emphasizing the importance of global food security. The building also pays tribute to the World Food Prize Laureates and Iowa’s agricultural and humanitarian pioneers for their significant contributions to the global fight against hunger, helping to feed the world and improving the lives of others.
