CITY OF FUKUOKA: HOME OF WSSF 2018 Fukuoka, where the 4th WSSF is held, is World Social the biggest city in Kyushu Island, with a population of approximately 1.5 million. The trip from Tokyo to Fukuoka takes Science Forum just about 90 minutes by plane. With a mild climate, Fukuoka is said to be one of the most comfortable cities 2018 to live in Asia. If one had to express its appeals in one phrase, that phrase would be "well-balanced.“ While the streets of Tenjin, the commercial center of the city, are lined with modern buildings and department stores, there is abundant nature at the seaside and in the mountains, both located in the suburbs, and numerous cultural and historical buildings such as temples and shrines. With a moderate population, an urban district existing in harmony with nature, and convenient transportation facilities, including the airport, Fukuoka has the right balance of various elements. Fukuoka has served as a gateway to Asia both geographically and historically, and it is brimming with a dynamic and cosmopolitan atmosphere. There are abundant information sources for foreigners, including free English publications, an FM radio station broadcast in various languages, and street signs in four languages, as well as shops selling foods from abroad, so international students have few difficulties living in Fukuoka. The city is welcoming to various cultures, as is evidenced by the establishment of the first mosque in Kyushu. You can easily engage in friendships with people from other countries in Fukuoka. 04
GETTING AROUND DOWNTOWN FUKUOKA Downtown Fukuoka is well known for its great accessibility. It only takes 5 minutes to Hakata Station (city’s railway hub) and 11 minutes to Tenjin (the commercial center of the city) from the Fukuoka airport by subway. TRANSPORTATION: IN & AROUND DOWNTOWN FUKUOKA FUKUOKA Getting around downtown Fukuoka is CITY SUBWAY easy and inexpensive, as we have an extensive network of public/ private carriers. If you are relatively unfamiliar with Fukuoka, and assuming that you are based in Hakata or Tenjin, the city subway is perhaps the least stressful, the most dependable means of transportation. The city subway runs every 3 to 7min. A one- way ticket is reasonably priced between 200 and 300 yen. BUS (Operator: Nishitetsu) More for the initiated in the city, but even more convenient is the local bus service run by one of Fukuoka’s biggest firms – Nishitetsu. The buses mainly arrive and depart from Hakata Kotsu Center (Hakata station bus terminal) and Tenjin Bus Center. The 100-yen loop bus connecting Hakata and Tenjin comes in very handy for sightseeing. 06 Source: Fukuoka City Guide YOKA NAVI (yokanavi.com/en/transportation-facilities/) Fukuoka City Subway (subway.city.fukuoka.lg.jp/eng/route/#no02)
TAXI If you are in a hurry, consider taking a cab. You’ll find a number of them cruising on the streets of downtown Fukuoka. If you want to take a cab, all you need to do is to put your hand up to indicate that you want their service. The basic fare for a standard taxi within the city is 580 yen. Premium taxis, which offer higher quality service, have a Hakata-ori textiles design that conveys the culture of Fukuoka and its spirit of hospitality. 空車 Vacant 賃走 Occupied Refer to the URL below for other transportation information such as Sightseeing Bus, JR train, Nishitetsu local train. TO & FROM FUKUOKA AIRPORT Most of the WSSF participants are coming in to Fukuoka through the Fukuoka Airport. We also expect that most of you will be staying in downtown Fukuoka – Hakata and Tenjin. Assuming that to be the case, let us explain a couple of ways in which you may get to downtown Fukuoka from the airport. You have basically two options: subway and buses. You can also take taxis but we will confine ourselves to these two. TO & FROM DOMESTIC TERMINAL DT Many of you will come into the Fukuoka Airport via Haneda or Narita. In that case, you are likely to arrive through the domestic terminal. The airport’s domestic terminal has two different arrival areas – north and south. From either of these areas, you can take subway or buses that will take you directly to downtown Fukuoka. To buy tickets, go to the ticket counter and tell the clerk where you’d like to go. English interpretation available. A oneway ticket to Hakata is about 260yen. Arrival Area NORTH Types of buses: -Express bus (Operator: Nishitetsu Bus) for Hakata Station, Tenjin, and other areas. 08 -Shuttle bus for International Terminals (approx.15 min.) A one-way ticket to Hakata would cost you 260yen. As you can see on the map below, there are only two stops to Hakata and 5 stops to Tenjin from the airport. IT TAKING SUBWAY TO DOWNTOWN FUKUOKA The airport’s international and domestic terminals are spread apart. But the city subway does not stop at the international terminal. So, you are required first to go to the domestic terminal to use the subway. Take advantage of free shuttle buses going back and forth between International and Domestic Terminals. Go to the street Station(H02) level, and start walking straight toward northwest in the direction of the B Hakata Wharf for about 10 minutes. You’ll see FICC in front of you. Don’t get it confused with the Fukuoka Kokusai Center, a standard venue for auto expos and such, as It is also located in the same 13 area. See the next page for the enlarged map of A and B Souce: FICC(www.marinemesse.or.jp/eng/congress/access/pdf/print.pdf)
For the first time, you may think it is taking forever to get to FICC on foot. Once you get used to it, however, it would not be as bad as you imagined it would be. It could be transformed into a congenial ten-minute walk on a pleasant Autumn day. In the mornings of the first two days of the forum, Kyushu University’s staff members will be standing at several points on the street between Gofukumachi and FICC with the placards in their hands so that you will not get lost. From Tenjin: Bus A As you become more familiar with central Fukuoka, you may want to take advantage of our excellent local bus system. In that case, go to either Hakata or Tenjin first. From Tenjin (Tenjin Solaria Stage-Mae Bus Stop 2A), take bus no.80, and get off at International Congress Center/ Sunpalace-Mae. PRE-PAIED IC CARDS In using buses (or subway for that matter), we highly recommend that you get a hold of either nimoca or HAYAKAKEN – both prepaid IC cards are widely circulated in Fukuoka. Nimoca can be purchased on Nishitetsu buses, Nishitetsu train ticket windows and other Nishitetsu sales facilities. Hayaka-ken can be purchased at ticket machines on City Subway stations. You can get them charged at train/bus stations and convenience stores. They are not at all difficult to use. All you need to do is: upon stepping onto the bus, hold up the IC card over a card reader installed by the door, and do the same when stepping out. But only this time, use the other card reader set next to the bus driver. HAYAKAKEN All these cards can be used on Nishitetsu buses, trains and City Subway. Convenience stores accept them as well. EATING IN & AROUND FICC Dining Options in and around Fukuoka International Congress Center (FICC) There are restaurants and diners in and around FICC, where you can enjoy reasonably priced meals. If you are inclined towards low- end meals, we recommend that you try Raconter (① on the map) and Lagoon (② on the map) located on the first floor of FICC and Fukuoka Sunpalace Tower (next to FICC) respectively. The meals available there are usually under 1,000yen. English menus are available in both these joints. Four convenience stores (Lawson, Seven-Eleven, Mini Stop, and Family Mart) offer “value” lunch boxes (up to 600yen/item), sandwiches (up to 400yen/item), salad bowls (up to 400yen/item), rice balls (up to 600yen/piece) etc. If you would like to go for fancier ones, you may want to try two higher- end restaurants located on the top floors of Fukuoka Sunpalace Tower – the one French (Laputa ④ on the map) and the other traditional Japanese (Ginga ③ on the map). They usually cost a little over 3000yen. The restaurants in Bayside Place Hakata - located just behind FICC facing the Hakata Wharf – also offer good meals with value prices (between 1,000yen and 2,000yen) with the added advantage of the great ocean view (⑤,⑥,⑦ on the map). Halal and vegetarian options Halal dishes are not at all common in Japan. So, we have made a special arrangement to have Halal lunch boxes available in multipurpose hall on the second floor (about 1,000yen/ piece). The lunch box vendor will also be selling vegetarian and regular lunches. Raconter and Lagoon we mentioned earlier do include in their menus vegetarian meals (though 16 limited to a few options in each place). Neither of them offers Halal options. The convenience stores just outside FICC carry salads and vegetarian sandwiches at reasonable prices.
