COMMANDER’S CORNER

    Greetings American Legion family members:
    As you read this the month of May will be past us. Elections of Post officers were conducted and
    most officers remained in place. One newcomer is James Lockyer who was elected as your 2nd Vice
    Commander. He will be responsible for Post activities, so if you have some ideas, and/or are willing to
    volunteer to help Jim through his year please contact him. Thank you.
    Also Memorial Day is past us, again with no parade or downtown ceremonies, maybe next year. However,
    we did our two cemetery flag decorations and conducted our service to Honor our dead, as usual.
    Covid-19 restrictions are being lifted and things are beginning to return to normal in our Canteen. Masks
    will no longer be required after June 2nd according to the current Governors’ order. You may continue to
    mask up, if you are more comfortable doing so. We are looking forward to increasing our activities such
    as Flag Day ceremony June 14th at 7:00PM, on our pavilion, and Fathers’ Day breakfast on Sunday June
    20th from 10-1.
    At this time it appears the City of Berea will be having a July 4th parade and fireworks display in the
    evening. If so, our parking lot will be open and free to Post members, and a $5.00 charge to non-
    members. Every year we seem to have a large crowd and we will have food and drink available, so stop
    on down early and get your spot for the event. Hope to see you there.
    Attention Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans! Public Law 116-23 was signed into law on June 25, 2019 and
    took effect January 1, 2020. The law extends a presumption of herbicide exposure to Blue Water Navy
    Veterans who served in the Republic of Vietnam and the offshore waters. Blue Water Navy Survivors, and
    certain dependents may be entitled to benefits if the Veteran was exposed. PLEASE if this applies to you
    contact me or the Cuyahoga County Veterans Service Commission to see about filing a claim.
    If you already have a claim on file, it may be eligible for re-adjudication.
    Please stay healthy and thank you for your continued support of Post 91.

                                            INDEPENDENCE DAY,
                                  A DAY TO REMEMBER WHY WE CELEBRATE!
July 4, 2021 will be America’s 245th Independence Day. We need to remember the reasons we celebrate July 4th
aka Independence Day. Our for fathers wanted Freedom and points that were important: We are all created equal
and have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
The Declaration of Independence is one of the most important documents in the history of the United States. It
was an official act taken by all 13 American colonies in declaring independence from British rule.
Our ancestors wanted freedom for themselves and future generations. The first shot was fired between the
Colonists and British troops on April 19, 1775 starting the American Revolution. After these first conflicts, tension
between Britain and the American colonists continued to mount.
On July 2, 1776, the Second Continental Congress voted for independence from Britain. . The document was
originally written by Thomas Jefferson, but Benjamin Franklin and John Adams, along with Jefferson worked
together to make changes. The final draft of the Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776, but the
actual signing of the final document took place on August 2, 1776.
The first public reading of the Declaration was on July 8, 1776 at the Pennsylvania State House (now Independence
Hall) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Later that same day, other readings occurred in Trenton, New Jersey, and
Easton, Pennsylvania.
John Dunlap, a printer made about 200 copies to be distributed throughout the 13 colonies.
The Declaration was officially signed on August 2, 1776. John Hancock, president of the Congress, was the first of
56 delegates who signed this enlarged version, writing in big, bold letters.
On August 4, 1776, after delegates of the Continental Congress had signed the document, the Declaration of
Independence was made official.
Sam Huston, an American Politician 1793-1863 stated “Independence is declared; it must be maintained”. The
Declaration of Independence is America’s Charter of Freedom and the document upon which the nation’s founding
principles were established.
As a reminder, here is an excerpt from the Declaration of Independence:
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with
certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these
rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That
whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to
abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in
such form, as to them shall seem most likely to affect their Safety and Happiness.

    Thank you to everyone who purchased tickets for our SAL annual fund raiser, the Super Cash Bonanza
    raffle. This drawing is conducted by the Knights of Columbus, with our SAL group benefiting. The K
    of C raffle supports different degrees of educational opportunities and scholarship. The drawing was
    scheduled for May 22, 2021. Jerry Kelly did a great job of leading this effort and we appreciate all the hard
    work.
    We are currently reviewing the applications received for SAL’s annual “The Bear Hof Memorial
    Scholarship” and will announce the deserving student soon.
    In Honor of Our Historical Monuments:
    The Cuyahoga County Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument was established in 1894 and is located on 3
    Public Square. The Commission continues to develop a video series revealing the special aspects of this
    Monument. Thank you to Jon Silvis who serves on the Commission and makes us aware of new videos
    posted. Please take the time to either learn about the Monument’s significance, or to reflect upon it.

Hi Everyone - Hope this finds everyone doing well, If any assistance from the Auxiliary is needed to help
you, please contact me, 440-223-6444,we will do our best.
The Auxiliary Garage Sale was a big success. Thanks to all who contributed and/or shopped. Start saving
for next year. Thanks to Nancy Doutt for her organizational skills and all her work. Thank you to the
many ladies of the Auxiliary who put in many hours to make this fundraiser a success.
Unfortunately, our Plant Sale had to be cancelled. Our supplier had some difficulties getting our plants.
Thank you to Vonnie Kline for her efforts and many phone calls. A big thank you to Don Kline for his
generous donation to help make up for the profits we lost.
Our 13th District Spring Conference is coming up on June 6 at Post 572 on State Rd., if anyone is interested
in attending as a delegate, please let me know, this is a good way to hear what other Posts are doing and
see the backbones of our programs. Lunch is served. Our Annual Department Convention will be held in
Independence this year in July. Many of our current officers will be attending to prepare for next year.
Our Officers will remain the same for one more year. Thanks to everyone for their participation, Please
consider attending a meeting on the 2nd Monday of the month. Maybe you want to consider being an
officer in the future, if not, we still would appreciate your input.

Hello Happy people!
Well, it looks like things are starting to slowly return to normal.
We are not sure of the exact events that will be occurring for the city for the 4th of July, but it is our
understanding that there will be fireworks! The ladies auxiliary will have our usual food and beverage
items available for sale starting before the fireworks.
I would also like to let you know that we will be starting to take pumpkin roll orders beginning on August
1st. Can’t wait to see so many of your smiling happy faces!

Auxiliary Poppy Fundraiser

Due to the pandemic and strict Covid-19 protocols, the Auxiliary has had to cancel all poppy fundraising
since 2019. We are asking our members to make a donation to the Unit 91 ALA Poppy Fund and to wear a
poppy starting on Friday May 28, 2021 (National Poppy Day) through Monday May 31, 2021 (Memorial Day)
to remember the sacrifice that our service men and women made for America.
ALL funds derived from the distribution of poppies are used exclusively for rehabilitation of veterans and
assistance to active-duty military and their families in Ohio.

Nancy Doutt, Auxiliary Membership, Garage Sale/Auxiliary Scholarships, Plant & Flower Sale,
District Convention and Department Convention
Thank you to the 360 members who have paid their 2021 dues as of the writing of this newsletter.
That is 92.8% of our goal of 388 members. Right after this newsletter, the 2022 membership
campaign begins!!! While the Blue Caps and S.A.L.’s membership begins July 1, the Auxiliary
membership year starts August 1. Auxiliary dues will remain at $30 for seniors (age 18 and
above) and $6.00 for Juniors (age birth through 17). Our Unit only keeps $7.00 of your senior
dues payment, and the rest is forwarded to the Department, where they keep a portion, and the
remaining amount is forwarded to National. Everyone gets a piece of the pie to support the many
programs we have. The National Auxiliary automatically generates two dues notices a year---one
in September and one in February. They do not send notices for Juniors, so if you sponsor a Junior,
you can pay their dues when you pay your own. You do not need your notice to pay your dues.
You can also pay online and print your own card, and then I will be notified that you paid. This is
a lot to digest, but I’m hoping this helps explain how we are just one cog of a big wheel. Please
contact me or another officer if you have any questions, would like more information about our
programs, or would like to get more involved.

• Best Garage Sale EVER! Thank you to everyone who saved their items from last year for this
year’s sale. We had record-breaking donations and sales and we are happy to announce we can
award scholarships to the following applicants: Sean Ambrose, Natalie Kurek, Meghan Laubert,
Celeste Leopold, Danielle Otto, Lucien Schoolmaster, Maria Viscomi, Molly Weaver, Anya-Lynn
Zurawski, and Xavier Zurawski.

• We apologize for the last-minute cancellation of the plant and flower sale. This roller coaster
weather put many distributors behind in the flower season.

• Some Auxiliary tidbits--Unit 91 American Legion Auxiliary is part of the Post 91 American Legion
family (along with Sons of the American Legion Squadron 91 and Post 91 American Legion Riders).
Each Post/Unit is part of a District. There are 14 Districts in Ohio. Our Post/Unit is part of the 13th
District. Some Districts cover multiple counties, but because Cuyahoga County is so large, the 13th
District covers just Cuyahoga County. The 14 Districts are part of the Department of Ohio (aka
the State of Ohio). Then, all the Departments comprise the National American Legion. National
is also divided into divisions. With, our Auxiliary year is ending. All our annual reports were due
April 15, and in the next two months we will learn how our good works fared against other Units
in our District and then against 400+ Units in the Department of Ohio. Our District Summer
Convention on June 5th in Parma, and the Department of Ohio Convention is July 9th and 10th in
Independence. If you are interested in attending either of these, or getting more involved in our

HOW DID OUR FOUNDERS ENVISION INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATIONS?
John Adams considered July 2 to be the day when Americans declared their independence.
He envisioned the celebration to be one filled with fun, games, and fireworks—not an occasion for displaying
military strength (as one might expect). On July 3, 1776, he wrote these words to his wife Abigail, capturing the
spirit of the times:
“Yesterday the greatest Question was decided, which ever was debated in America, and a greater, perhaps, never
was or will be decided among Men. A Resolution was passed without one dissenting Colony ‘that these united
Colonies, are, and of right ought to be free and independent States, and as such, they have, and of Right ought to
have full Power to make War, conclude Peace, establish Commerce, and to do all the other Acts and Things, which
other States might rightfully do…’
The second day of July 1776 will be the most memorable, in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will
be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival… . It ought to be solemnized with Pomp
and Parade, with, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the
other from this Time forward forever more.”

On July 18, 1777, an issue of the Virginia Gazette describes the July 4 celebration in Philadelphia:
“The evening was closed with the ringing of bells, and at night there was a grand exhibition of fireworks, which
began and concluded with thirteen rockets on the commons, and the city was beautifully illuminated. Every thing
was conducted with the greatest order and decorum, and the face of joy and gladness was universal.”
What’s really special about America’s celebration of freedom is it was quite different for its time, focusing on the
joys of freedom. Many countries have emulated this spirit of celebration ever since.

 America has a long political and emotional history with the virtue of freedom. You can use Fourth
 of July quotes about freedom to reflect on how far America has come while acknowledging the
 significance of Independence Day. These quotes are intuitive and great for acknowledging some of

Hello All
Isn’t it wonderful .... No Masks!! We haven’t seen our families since Christmas 2019 and in the past 6
weeks we’ve seen them twice. And my daughter is here this weekend. Being with family warms my
heart. I’m hoping everyone is seeing their family & friends.
The Post is getting back to normal. Our hours are back, Albert’s Cafe is serving lunches and we have a
different evening special. The Kitchen has a sign up sheet for members that will donate a few hours a
month. Think .... Many hands means less work for the core group of people.
Sarah is doing a great job planning events for the Canteen & posting on Facebook to let members know
what’s happening in the Canteen & Cafe. Stop down, say Hello, have a bite to eat and see those members
you haven’t seen in awhile.
