MS News October 2018 First Week Opinions By Lexi Anderson This is the first time Wellsburg & Follansbee have been combined as a school. I’m sure we all have mixed emotions about the new school year. Fifth grader, Landon Tibbs says the first week was hectic, but he found all of his classes . The most exciting thing for him was gym, but the school work was stressful. Eighth grader, Jazmyn Carbasho says she kept getting lost the first week. The most stressful thing for her was waiting long in the lunch line for her food, but seeing her best friend was exciting. Seventh grade math teacher, Ms. Eggert says she enjoyed the first week. She found everything except a few kids. The fire drill was the most stressful thing, but meeting her new students was exciting. Principal Mrs. Sisinni says she also enjoyed the first week; all though it was very hectic, she enjoyed the experience. Mrs. Eggert’s Toy Drive By Olivia Rocchio September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. During the month of September, Mrs. Eggert collected new toys for a toy drive for the children at Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. She collected new toys from anywhere from a baby to 18 years old. Her motivation is that when her brother was twelve years old he passed away at Children’s Hospital from pediatric cancer. Last year, Mrs. Eggert collected around 132 new toys at Follansbee Middle, so she wanted to double that and collect around 275 toys this year. As of October 4, she has collected 246 toys and $190 dollars! She will be delivering these toys to the children at the hospital within the week! Great job to everyone who contributed! BMS Sports Jr. Bruins Volleyball By Morgan Oliver This is the first time Wellsburg and Follansbee are playing volleyball together as a team. There are two 8th grade teams. There is a gold team which is non-conference, and the green team which is conference. There is also a 7th grade team and a 6th grade team. According to Anna Koscevic who is on the gold team, the strength of the team are the captains, Carly Kasper and Preslei Ridgely. One weakness is that they need more communication. Anna has a great outlook on this season. She thinks that they will be better and will win games. Madison Long, on the green team, says her strengths for her team are offense and working as a team. Their weaknesses are communicating and moving their feet. Madison thinks her team will do pretty good and that maybe they will win BMCS. According to 7th grade player Madison Siedler, the strengths of her team are serving and working together on the court. One of their weaknesses is not calling the ball when it comes to them. The outlook for the season she says is to win games, and to get better. According to 6th grader Jasmine Gregory, their serves are the best of their team she said. One thing they need to work on is bumping over the net when they recieve it. Her outlook for the season is that they will beat some teams, but probably not all of them. 8th grade Coach Bertelli believes the strengths of her team are teamwork and talking to each other. Some weakness ares team bonding and remembering that all these girls on other teams played together before. Her outlook is as long as they keep playing like they are now, they will keep improving and should start winning. Good luck this season to all of the volleyball teams!
BMS Sports Jr. Bruins Football By Madison Long and Carly Kasper Brooke Middle School Jr. Bruins have had a pretty good season so far. 7th grade Jr. Bruins and 8th grade Jr. Bruins should be very proud of themselves. Coach Sizemore thinks that one of the 7th grade team’s weaknesses is not having a lot of guys, but he says they’re still tough. 7th grade player Jace Campinelli thinks that his team’s strength is defense. 8th grade player Jack Jones said that the 8th graders’ weakness is defense, but he thinks their strength is communicating. Everyone hopes that their season goes well for both 7th and 8th grade teams. Let’s go Jr. Bruins! Cross Country By Angelina Lippoli New school, new sports. Middle School Survival Guide New School, New Lockers By Grace Allen The lockers at Brooke Middle School are programmed with a built-in lock. The lock is a combination lock. All students have their own locker. Since it is only the beginning of the year, we’ve had students have trouble opening them. In order to open your lock, start at zero and pass zero twice. The third time go to the right to your first number of your combination. Then, go left once and go past your second number. Make sure to go all the way around. Then, go to your second number. Finally, go straight to your last number of your combination, and now you should be in your locker. The lockers also tend to get messy a lot. Here are some tips on how to organize them. First, you could stack your books or line them up according to your class schedule. Next, if you always lose pencils, keep them in a magnetic cup. Last, put your backpack on the hook. Lockers are easy once you get the hang of it. If you’re still struggling, I suggest keep practicing. Flu and Germs By Ben Adams Since it is flu season and everyone is just waiting to spread their germs, here are some precautions. School nurse, Mrs. Pepe, said the number one thing to do to stay healthy is wash your hands. Mrs. Pepe also said that getting your flu shot is another way to not get sick. Another way to not get sick is to stay active and exercise at least sixty minutes. Those are some ways to stay healthy and not get sick this school year. Positive Behavior By Zane Shifflett We all know the BMS expected behaviors: ● Be here, be on time. Be present for class. ● Follow class and school and school rules. ● Respect the rights, feelings, and property of others. ● Come to class prepared. ● Complete your class assignments on time. You have to follow these behaviors to participate in the PBIS reward on the last Friday of every month. All grades do something different. For example, for the month of September 5th grade is doing something different in each classroom. 6th grade students are playing games, and 7th and 8th graders are going out on the football field. If you missed out this month, you still have a chance next month. Remember to stay out of ISS + OSS, and try not to miss too many days of school so you can participate in October’s reward.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer in women. Breast cancer is the most common cancer. Did you know that men can get breast cancer too? In 2017 the American Cancer Society estimates over 2000 cases were diagnosed in men. Down Syndrome Awareness By:Anna Long Down Syndrome is a genetic chromosome 21 disorder that you get when you are developing in the womb. One of the symptoms of many are delayed development. In 2018 Gerber invited Lucas Waren a one year old from Dalton, Georgia to be the first baby of the year with Down Syndrome. People with this syndrome have 47 chromosomes instead of 46. A person with Down Syndrome has 2 extra chromosomes, so instead of having 21 they have 23. This can cause a distinct facial appearance. We use the month of October to bring awareness to others about Down Syndrome. Anyone who has or knows anyone with Down Syndrome, please take the time to remind them they are beautiful and strong. #downsyndromebeautiful
Monthly News Role Models of the Month By Olivia Bain What makes Beyonce a great role model? Beyonce is a great role model because not only is she one of the great survivors of the music industry, but she cares deeply about people. She supported 34 charities including, Clothes Off Our Back, Feeding America, Global Goals, Kids Wish Network, and Stand Up To Cancer. That is to name a few. She also supported 32 causes such as abuse, animals, bullying, cancer, and creative arts. There are so many reasons why she is a role model for so many people. She is beautiful, her songs help and encourage, and many of her songs are inspiring. She is a very kind person overall. John Cena is an amazing role model because he helps inspire people. He has supported two charities including Kids Wish Network and Make-A-Wish Foundation. He may have not supported as many charities as Beyonce, but he still supports young kids around the world. He is busy with his career as a WWE superstar. He has inspired me to be bold, be fearless, and be ME. I hope he can be a role model to you too. Quote of the Month By Jace Campinelli The quote of the month is by Babe Ruth: “Every strike brings me one step closer to the next homerun.” This quote means a lot to me. It makes me understand that you should never give up. This quote also means that you can accomplish anything. Another meaning people can pick up from this quote is that some bad things can lead you to really good things. The more you work at something, the better you get at what you are working on.

Critics Corner Stranger Things By Katelyn Lloyd Stranger Things is a great show that went viral in 2016. In October of 2017, Season 2 of Stranger Things hit Netflix. Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) has a pet that is actually a demodog. Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) tries to close the gate. Will keeps having memories that are about the upside down. Stranger Things Season 3 is coming out December 1, 2017. I give this show 5 out of 5 stars. Riverdale By Madison Drazic Riverdale is a show on the CW. The main characters are Betty (Lili Reinhart), Jughead (Cole Sprouse), Archie (KJ Apa), Veronica (Camila Mendes), Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch), Hiram (Mark Consuelos) and The Black Hood.
