INSPIRATION Mount Sinai Hospital Montreal MOUNT SINAI HOSPITAL ACCREDITED WITH EXEMPLARY STANDING Mount Sinai Hospital Montreal (MSH) is ex- tremely proud to have successfully complied with 770 out of 772, or 99.7%, of Accreditation Canada’s evaluation criteria applicable to it, and achieved the designation of “Accredited with Exemplary Standing” following a compre- hensive, rigorous investigation of its perform- ance against national standards of excellence. Accreditation Canada is an independent, not- for-profit organization that assesses the quality of Canadian healthcare organizations’ practices and services. This type of evaluation by an in- dependent third party is mandatory under Que- bec law. Mount Sinai Hospital Montreal is ex- tremely proud to have obtained its highest rat- ing in history and also one of top rankings among all hospitals in the province of Quebec. Eight quality dimensions were assessed by Ac- creditation Canada surveyors, including; col- laboration with communities, accessibility of services, safety, work environment, client- centered services, continuity of services, effec- tiveness and resource efficiency. This result is a testament to the quality and safety of ser- vices provided to our patients by our entire staff and by our volunteers. Congratulations to all! INSPIRATION HEART DISEASE AND HEALTHY CHOICES A health kiosk on Valentine’s Day educated and reminded us of the importance of healthy choices. Organized by Chudney Pierre-Louis, Coordinator of Staff Health and Ambulatory Services. What is Heart disease? Your heart is a muscle that gets energy from blood carrying oxygen and nutrients. Having a constant supply of blood keeps your heart working properly. Most people think of heart dis- ease as one condition. But in fact, heart disease is a group of conditions affecting the structure and functions of the heart and has many root causes. Coronary artery disease, for example, develops when a combination of fatty mate- rials, calcium and scar tissue (called plaque) builds up in the arteries that supply blood to your heart (coronary arter- ies). The plaque build-up narrows the arteries and prevents the heart from getting enough blood. Mount Sinai Hospital’s Respiratory Care work daily with one of the leading causes of heart disease is smoking. Did you know: Smoking contributes to more than 37,000 deaths a year in Canada, of which almost 11,000 are heart dis- ease and stroke-related (29% of all smoking-related deaths are heart disease and stroke- related). (Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse, Ottawa 2002) Almost 6,300 non-smokers die each year from exposure to second-hand smoke. If current rates of tobacco use continue, approximately 1 million Canadians will die over the next 20 years as a direct result of smoking and second-hand smoke. ( Canadian Journal of Public Health 2004; 95(1): 38-44.) Good News: As soon as an individual quits smoking, the risk of heart disease and stroke begins to decrease. Within one year of quitting, the risk of dying from smoking-related heart disease is cut in half. Within 10 years, the risk of dying from lung cancer is cut in half. After 15 years, the risk of dying will be nearly that of a non-smoker (Health Canada Statistics 2005) Mount Sinai has taken the decision over the past few years to focus on healthy choices in the cafeteria. Nutritious meals and snacks providing a balanced diet and promoting good health are prepared daily. Vending machines now house complete meals and healthy refreshments. Literature on healthy living is available in the cafeteria. Proper education on prevention and the management of heart disease is priceless. Spring 2013 4 Employee Bulletin
INSPIRATION NEWS FROM THE MSH RESEARCH DEPARTMENT WIITM NINTENDO GAMING SYSTEM USED AS A THERAPEUTIC TOOL FOR PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE LUNG DISEASE (COPD) Continued physical activity is essential in the management of COPD. However, adherence with exercise remains poor. In order to encourage exercise and promote healthy living, Esther Dajczman, Clinical Nurse Specialist at Mount Sinai Hospital (MSH), implemented a pilot study testing the use of a virtual game sys- tem during in-patient pulmonary rehabilitation (PR). To make this project possible, Nathan Yang, a student from McGill University Faculty Medicine working within the Research Bursary Program, and Rima Wardini, research associate at MSH, were put in charge of patient enrollment and training throughout the course of the study. Patients with COPD at MSH were offered this program as an adjunct to their regular PR sessions. Games were pre-screened and patients were then offered to play 3 times weekly. The purpose of this study was to assess safety, feasibility, enjoyment and compliance, with the Nintendo Wii® gaming system. This study showed that moderate exercise using the Nintendo Wii® was safe, well tolerated and enjoyed as an adjunct to the in-patient PR program for patients with COPD. This project was in fact so successful, that many patients undergoing regular PR having heard about the adjunct program, wanted to be included even when completion of accrual was achieved. In view of the positive results of this study, we would want to further examine the effects of a virtual game system as compared to usual discharge instructions on maintaining physical activity following PR. In fact, we believe that this modality may prove useful and entertaining particularly in the home environment. Results of this pilot study were presented at pulmonary rounds at both MSH and The Jewish General Hos- pital, and at the 2012 annual meeting of the Association of pulmonologists of Quebec. In addition, this work will be presented at the 2013 Respiratory Health Network of the FRQS and at the International American Thoracic Society meeting in Philadelphia. ACCREDITATION MEDIA COVERAGE Mount Sinai Hospital made the news including Global TV Mont- real, The Journal de Montreal, The Canadian Jewish News, The Suburban newspaper and on-line magazine as well as 15 on-line sites including Yahoo!Canada Finance, Globe Advisor, Scoop Santé and WSBNN The Wall Street Business News Network. INSPIRATION AUXILIARY MOUNT SINAI HOSPITAL ...80 YEARS OLD The Auxiliary of Mount Sinai was founded in 1933 by a small group of women. At that time their prime moti- vation was to provide basic necessities and comforts such as mattresses, linens and clothes for long-term tubercular patients. In the years following, the Auxil- iary helped to raise funds to set up hospital programs, as well as continuing to raise money for medical and non-medical equipment. Back in the 1940’s they raised funds to build and staff rehabilitation bungalows as well as later funding the construction of a nurses residence along with all needed furnishings. By the 1950’s there were over 800 members! Since that time the Auxiliary continued to provide the extra amenities, equipment, services and programs that were not government funded. The Auxiliary, as part of it’s outreach to the Auxiliary members and the late Mr. Joseph Rothbart Executive Director Residence Dedication 1950’s community, helped to implement a School Health Edu- cation Program and a Respiratory Awareness Program. In the past 10 years alone the Auxiliary has raised more than 2 million dollars to purchase beds, mattresses, res- piratory and sleep equipment as well funding various programs in the hospital. This year marking their 80th Anniversary the Auxiliary will hold a number of events which can be seen on the MSH website. We are proud to have such an outstanding group of women and men who continue to uphold their motto. “Give so that others may live.” Auxiliary Members visiting O.T. Department RENOVATIONS After much wait and anticipation the 4th floor is under refurbish- ment. All resident rooms, the TV room, dining room and nurses’ sta- tion on the 4TH floor will be completely refurbished. Residents were given 2 color choices for the accent wall of their room. The TV rooms and dining area on the 2nd and 3rd floor will also be refur- bished. A coordinated effort between staff, family and patients has been put in place to make the transition from room to room as seamless as possible. Plans for completion are the end of April. The result will assure a better “milieu de vie” for all of our residents. Spring 2013 6 Employee Bulletin
