Mother Teresa of Calcutta Catholic School Second Grade 2021 – 2022 Mrs. Decker – Teacher Teacher Background: • USF – B.A. in Social Sciences, 1988 • K-6 Florida Certification • 12 years experience with MTC/MHR • 6th year Teaching My mission is to provide faith, guidance, structure, and instruction to children in an inviting, nurturing classroom environment, and to prepare each of them for the third grade. Class Goals: • Provide an inviting, nurturing and Christ centered classroom environment. • Emphasize critical and creative thinking. • Encourage students’ organizational skills by completing planner daily. • Assess students’ work daily using a variety of methods. • Evaluate students through formative and summative assessments. • Prepare students for the third-grade curriculum. I will assign dates for each prayer to be memorized. We begin in a few weeks with the Act of Contrition. Make-up Work: If a student is out for only one or two days, upon return to school, the student should meet with the teacher about the work missed. The student will be given a deadline by the teacher to complete and turn in these assignments. It is the responsibility of the student to see that the work is completed. The student may go to the MTC Teacher Webpage to check the homework missed. If the work is not made up by the deadline specified by the teacher, the grade for work missed will be recorded as a 50. Formative & Summative Assessments: • Students write quiz/tests in their planner every Monday • Posted on MTC Educator Webpage in advance. • Weighting: Summative 70%, Formative 30% Criteria for Retakes - Grades K-5 • The classroom teacher initiates the retake process. The teacher will communicate with the parent when a retake is necessary. • · Retakes can earn up to an 85%. • · The higher grade (out of the retake and the original grade) will be recorded for credit in the grade book. The highest possible grade on a retake is 85%. • · Projects/prayers with ongoing feedback and clear completion deadlines do not qualify for retakes. • · Students will be required to complete additional practice in order to qualify for a retake. • · Students must make test corrections and return the test before the retest to be eligible. • · The retake will cover all the same standards. • · Teachers have discretion over the format of the retake assessment. Grading Scale: • A = 90 - 100% • B = 80 - 89% • C = 70 - 79% • D = 60 - 69% • F = 50-59% Behavior Management: • School-wide (Please refer to Parent Handbook online) • Classroom: Second grade students earn a conduct grade on the report card. We put in every effort to create a positive classroom culture; however, consequences will still be necessary. In the same way that we want students to learn to do the right thing simply because it is right, we want students to avoid poor choices, not because they are afraid of being caught, but because they know they are wrong. We are clear and consistent about what behavior will lead to what consequence. • Planners are used to communicate inappropriate behavior.

• STAR Testing – Progress monitoring and individual level Standardized Testing • Second graders take the TerraNova in the spring Specials Schedule: • P.E. Days M/W/F (Come to school dressed in P.E. clothes & sneakers/bring water bottle) Snack: Students may have a healthy snack. Snacks remain in the backpack or lunchbox until snack time. • Quick and simple snacks (fruit, vegetables, crackers) • Water only • Birthday snacks are permitted at lunch time, please send individual portions (ex: cupcakes, popsicles or pre-cut brownies) Class Supplies: • Please check MTC Educator Page for any needed supplies. • Backpacks – must fit in the cubby. Parent/Student Handbook Online: • Please read through the entire handbook. • Uniforms: Please read the section in the Handbook and follow the rules for school uniform. • Please label all uniforms, P.E. clothes, school jackets, etc. • Diocesan Policy-absence and tardy Field trip: • If you are interested in chaperoning on the field trip you must have all paperwork completed, Diocesan Level II Screening, and Safe Environment Training before you can chaperone. We take a bus to all field trips. Sacramental Program for Second Grade • Students preparing for the Sacraments of Reconciliation or Holy Eucharist receive special instruction from their respective parish. • Please contact your Parish office with any questions to regarding classes and registration. • Please attend church every weekend in order to prepare your child for the second-grade sacraments.
