Presented by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Manitoba Derby By Bob Gates Race Historian The first “Derby” was run in 1930; although from 1930 to 1933 it was known as the Manitoba Stakes. In 1934 the name of the race was changed to the Manitoba Derby. It should come as no surprise that our Derby was the brainchild of Robert James Speers, the Father of Thoroughbred Racing in Western Canada. Speers established the race for horsemen to showcase thoroughbreds that were foaled in Western Canada. In 1936 the Derby was opened to all horses bred in Canada. The race was run annually at old Polo Park race track with the exception of 1937 when it was ran at Whittier Park in St. Boniface. In 1941 the name of the race was changed to the Canadian Derby. Few people realize that the heart and soul of the prestigious Canadian Derby can be found in Winnipeg and that the Canadian Derby was “born” out of the Manitoba Derby. At that time, Canada was the only major country that did not have a national “Derby” so R. J. Speers sacrificed "Manitoba" for a national name. The new Canadian Derby was run at Polo Park race track until it closed in 1956 and the race was relocated to Edmonton. Jack Hardy tried to bring the race back to Winnipeg when Assiniboia Downs opened in 1958, but was unsuccessful so the Canadian Derby is still run in Edmonton. In 1960 the Manitoba Derby with its storied past was resurrected and it has been run at the Downs ever since. In 1985 the Derby was changed to an open event for all three-year-old thoroughbreds. To date, three Manitoba breds have won our Derby. Gowerlace was the first to accomplish the feat in 1938. It took almost 40 years for the next home-bred, Merry's Jay to win the race in 1976 and Royal Frolic followed in 1993. Assiniboia Downs proudly celebrates this year's 70th running of the Manitoba Derby and its list of previous winners reads like the who's who of racing with national and local champions such as Fanfreluche, Merry's Jay and Overskate. The list of owners and trainers include Levesque, Mitchell and K5 Stables, Rowntree, Blake and Starr. Jockeys Hawley, Krone and Platts are but a few of the riders who have won our Derby. Today we salute all participants, past and present who have made the Manitoba Derby what it is today! Assiniboia Downs would like to thank BDO Canada LLP & CIBC who will be presenting BDO Canada LLP $500 scholarships to six recipients on Manitoba Derby Day! www.bdo.ca

CANDY GIANT 3 Year Old - Chestnut - Colt Owner: Eurico Martens Trainer: Eurico Martens Presented by Presented by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Jockey: Tyrone Nelson Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries CANDY GIANT Probable odds: 5-2 Pedigree: Eskendereya by Giant’s Causeway out of Miss Relentless by Mr. Greeley Bred in Kentucky by Lantern Hill Farm LLC, Phil Needham & Judy Needham th The local favourite for the 70 Manitoba Derby is this flashy chestnut colt by the Wood Memorial winner Eskendereya. In his most recent effort for South African born and Canadian raised trainer Eurico Martens, Candy Giant drew off to win the Harry Jeffrey Stakes here at Assiniboia Downs by five lengths. The addition of blinkers seemed to transform this at times green colt into a force to be reckoned with. The Martens barn is having a career meet here at Assiniboia Downs with 10 wins from 40 starts. Purchased at the Keeneland September Sale for $2,500 in 2016 this Kentucky bred colt looks like he will only get better the further the distance of the race is. th A blazing work of :47.4 on the morning of July 29 only serves to continue to add to the resume of Candy Giant who, if he continues his upward trajectory, appears to be the horse to beat and make it back-to-back Derby wins for jockey Tyrone Nelson in this year's Manitoba Derby.
EAGLEBINE 3 Year Old - Dark Bay - Colt Owner: MDM Stable Trainer: Jack Robertson Presented by Presented by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Jockey: Chavion Chow Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries EAGLEBINE Probable odds: 25-1 Pedigree: Emcee by Unbridled’s Song out of Donna Mira by Diesis *GB Bred in New York by Sequel Stallions New York LLC & Louis P. Ferrari A recent flashy maiden victory for this lightly raced son of Grade 1 winning sprinter Emcee put him on the Manitoba Derby trail. In only his second career start Eaglebine showed tremendous speed to overpower a Maiden Special Weight field by 9 lengths in an impressive time. He showed marked improvement from his first start only 18 days later. Conditioned by veteran Manitoba horsemen Jack Robertson and to be ridden by 2015 leading rider Chavion Chow, this lightly raced colt looks to stretch his speed around two turns for the first time. By the Grade 1 winning sire Emcee out of a Diesis mare named Donna Mira, this New York bred is the likely early pace in this years Manitoba Derby. If Eaglebine takes another step forward in lifetime start number three he could take the field a long way on Monday afternoon.
FORTIFIED EFFORT 3 Year Old - Dark Bay - Gelding Owners: J. Lloyd Yother, Kevin Eikleberry, William Matthews and Marvin Fleming Presented by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Trainer: Kevin Eikleberry Presented by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Jockey: Ry Eikleberry FORTIFIED EFFORT Probable odds: 5-1 Pedigree: Ez Effort by In Excess (IRE) out of Shaky Canyon by Gulch Bred in Arizona by Fleming Thoroughbred Farm LLC This well travelled Arizona bred has the most career wins and the most earnings of any competitor in this year's Manitoba Derby. This versatile son of Ez Effort sports wins ranging from four and a half furlongs to a mile and a sixteenth. He put together a good winter campaign for trainer Kevin Eikleberry who teams up with jockey son Ry Eikleberry to try for Derby magic. Fortified Effort rattled off three consecutive wins in Arizona restricted races this winter before testing some deep waters at Sunland Park. This bay gelding has gotten back to form recently with three wins in his last four starts including the recent Colorado Derby at Arapahoe Park. With a well travelled race record it's been shown that Fortified Effort can bring his game on the road and he will attempt to continue that when he tries Assiniboia Downs for the first time, while doing so as one of the major contenders in the field.
GATO GUAPO 3 Year Old - Dark Bay - Gelding Owner: Charles Garvey Trainer: Robertino Diodoro Presented by Presented by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Jockey: Antonio Whitehall Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries GATO GUAPO Probable odds: 6-1 Pedigree: Factum by Storm Cat out of Run Macy Run by West Acre Bred in Florida by Stonehedge LLC One of three competitors for 2016 Manitoba Derby winning trainer Robertino Diodoro, this recent private purchase invades from Monmouth Park in New Jersey, where he most recently won a claiming $40,000, non- winners of two lifetime event on the turf course with a furious late kick. This Florida bred by Factum has done most of his lifetime running on the grass with six of his seven starts on grass, but his lone dirt race was an impressive twelve length victory in a maiden claiming event in April at Tampa Bay Downs. Ridden by current ASD leading rider Antonio Whitehall, this late charging gelding will look to turn for home and unleash a late powerful kick. The barn is not to be taken lightly after winning this race in 2016 with Inside Straight. Currently the Diodoro barn is tied for third in North America with 153 wins from 679 starts with earnings of more than $3,600,000. Strong connections, an unbeaten dirt record and a furious late kick make Gato Guapo an interesting addition to this year's Manitoba Derby and he will be right in the mix come Monday afternoon.
PETE MARWICK 3 Year Old - Bay - Gelding Owner: Al Johnson Trainer: Gary Danelson Presented by Presented by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Jockey: Adolfo Morales Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries PETE MARWICK Probable odds: 10-1 Pedigree: Soldat by War Front out of Days Like This by Congrats Bred in Florida by Woodford Thoroughbreds A recent Allowance score here at Assiniboia Downs served as a final tune-up for this gelded son of Soldat. With two wins at the meet and sixteen lifetime starts Pete Marwick boasts the most experience of anyone in the field. As well, this horse certainly has experience in his corner with his connections. Trainer Gary Danelson looks for his elusive Manitoba Derby win in the form of Pete Marwick while teamed with veteran rider Adolfo Morales who won the Derby in 2009 and 2015. The pair look to guide Pete to the winner's circle on Monday afternoon. Claimed for $75,000 in November at Churchill Downs by owner Al Johnson, this horse tested a number of Kentucky Derby prospects over the winter, including the likes of Louisiana Derby winner Noble Indy and Gotham Stakes winner Enticed, before shipping north to ASD and breaking his maiden in dominating fashion. Pete came back to run a pair of seconds and a third in local Derby preps before he got back to his winning ways in the most recent Allowance effort. He is yet to miss the board in five starts over the local oval. Experienced connections, a versatile running style and a grinding tenacity gives Pete Marwick a big shot in this year's Manitoba Derby.
SKY PROMISE 3 Year Old - Bay - Colt Owners: Rick Wiest, Clayton Wiest, R 6 Stable and Norman Tremblay Presented by Presented by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Trainer: Robertino Diodoro Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Jockey: Rico W. Walcott SKY PROMISE Probable odds: 7-2 Pedigree: Sky Mesa by Pulpit out of Maddie’s Promise by Dehere Bred in Kentucky by Normandy Farm LLC A recent claim for $40,000 at Churchill Downs, this three year old colt by Sky Mesa comes to the Manitoba Derby for the powerful Robertino Diodoro team. Owned by a group of partners out of Alberta, Sky Promise looks to unleash a furious closing kick. He will be guided in the saddle by perennial Northlands Park leading rider Rico Walcott who has over 1200 career wins in his twelve year riding career. Sky Promise has tried a number of difficult spots in his campaign including taking on the likes of graded stakes winners Blended Citizen, Reride and Snapper Sinclair. He will now make the switch back over to dirt after thirteen consecutive starts on either turf or synthetic surfaces. Don't let the lack of dirt form fool you though as his dam, Maddie's Promise, was a stakes winner on dirt at Lone Star Park and she has produced dirt winners. Sky Promise's two dirt races were both good efforts as he hit the board in two juvenile sprints last spring in Kentucky at distances less than optimal for this late charging colt. Now this recent claim looks to pay immediate dividends as he invades with a big shot.
UNITED PATRIOT 3 Year Old - Chestnut - Gelding Owner: Robert G. Nokes and Robert Nokes Trainer: Robertino Diodoro Presented by Presented by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Jockey: Rigo Sarmiento Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries UNITED PATRIOT Probable odds: 9-2 Pedigree: Flat Out by Flatter out of Kim D by With Approval Bred in Oklahoma by Center Hills Farm United Patriot has flashed brilliance at times in his ten race career. His dominating four length victory on April 19 when he was claimed for $50,000 would make him hard to beat in this race. Now under the tutelage of Robertino Diodoro for Manitoba father-son team of Robert G. Nokes and Robert Nokes this chestnut, who will be making his first start as a gelding, has tried two challenging spots in his last two starts. United Patriot sold for $155,000 as a two-year-old in training at the Barretts March sale in 2017 after working an 1/8 of a mile in 10 2/5. He broke his maiden in career start number three at Keeneland and followed that up with another win at nearby Churchill Downs. After a starter allowance win at the Fair Grounds, he was claimed at Keeneland in April for $50,000. He figures to be forwardly placed and comes into the race with two very good breezing workouts in July at Canterbury Park after a poor performance in a tough race, the Mystic Lake Derby, on the grass at Canterbury Park. A return to his spring form would make United Patriot a favourite in the Derby and may put the Nokes family into the winner's circle in a homecoming of sorts with this talented Oklahoma bred.
ZACK RIDGE ROAD 3 Year Old - Bay - Gelding Owner: John Ganas Trainer: Steven Gaskin Presented by Presented by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Jockey: Stanley Chadee Jr. Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries ZACK RIDGE ROAD Probable odds: 15-1 Pedigree: Brahms by Danzig out of Given to Me by Point Given Bred in Arkansas by Sanders Brothers The Golden Boy and Balooga Bull Stakes winner Zack Ridge Road showed grit and determination in two wins th over the ASD surface. He looks to regain that form with a good showing in this the 70 Manitoba Derby. Zack Ridge Road goes for the Steve Gaskin barn, owner John Ganas and jockey Stanley Chadee Jr. This team has had a flurry of success this year with Zack Ridge Road and the recent Manitoba Mile winner Media Melee. Claimed for $20,000 at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto off the high percentage Norm McKnight barn, this Arkansas bred gelding had two wins at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs Arkansas. This winter he also finished third in a $100,000 stakes event, the Rainbow Stakes. In the Balooga Bull Stakes Zack Ridge Road bided his time and charged from last to win going away. Three weeks later in the Golden Boy Stakes he employed new tactics and battled back on the lead to nip fellow Manitoba Derby contestant Candy Giant by a neck to get the win. A flat effort in the Harry Jeffrey can be excused after back to back hard efforts and a return to form would put Zack Ridge Road right in contention for the biggest prize of them all in this year's Manitoba Derby.
