Cookbook for a Great ASDA Chapter MN ASDA 2016 Cold Crown Awards Chapter Achievement Awards Application Minneapolis, MN Taken by Beau Hoium, MN ASDA Member, Class of 2017
Introduction Foreword from the Chefs ! A good meal, like a great ASDA chapter, encompasses multiple facets and components. Here at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry ASDA Chapter, our ‘chefs’ work tirelessly all year to welcome dental students into a lifelong involvement to organized dentistry. Not only does our chapter embody ASDA’s core values of passion, engagement, integrity and community, but we constantly strive to improve our chapter and everything we offer our members. As our involvement within organized dentistry grows, we slowly progress from sous-chefs to head chefs, constructing our own masterful creations. ! As you follow our chapter’s journey through 2015, we’d like to share with you our ‘recipe cards’ for a successful, happy and active ASDA Chapter. Similar to appetizers being the first dish, our chapter begins with a focus on our membership and how we communicate with them. The next course, ‘salads’, the fiber and garnish to a meal. Like a salad adds to a meal, advocacy is the core of organized dentistry, adding substance to our profession. Next comes ‘entrees’ - a variety of flavors and combinations that fill you up. Here at MN ASDA, our variety of activities throughout the year help to fill our members with opportuni- ties and involvement in organized dentistry. Since every good entree needs protein to bulk it up, MN ASDA’s ‘meat’ is in our fundraising ini- tiatives. Finally, what better way to end a great meal than with some- thing fun and sweet for ‘dessert’? So too, the creme brûlée of ASDA is in helping teach pre-dental students about our profession and organized dentistry. However, like every good ASDA leader knows, organized den- tistry doesn’t just stop at those few items- there are a variety of ‘snacks’ that compliment a successful ASDA chapter and a great meal. ! In addition to our chapter embodying the key ASDA core val- ues, each of our chefs have made their individual contribution to our amazing “menu”. Allison Forbes, MN ASDA President Elect says that her “favorite part of Dentistry and ASDA is the people! In MN ASDA I get to be a part of a fun motivated group of people from all levels in school. I also get to meet amazing dentists from around the state and the MDA who are just as passionate as the students.” Lucy Corrin MN ASDA Communication Chair “hopes [that] our recipes for a great ASDA chapter inspire you to whip up something new. Social media can be a great tool to engage members, and that is something that our ASDA chapter has tried to excel at this year.” Brian Song MN ASDA Treasurer says that “the heart of what keeps an institution whole, honest, and true is it’s upholding of character and integrity. With Minnesota being one of the states at the forefront of licensure, our chapter has been vocal about educating the student body on the controversy and ethical implications of various licensing examinations and what alternatives are on the land- scape. MN ASDA honors the profession of dentistry and more importantly, we honor our patients by upholding integrity: what is right, moral, and true”. Finally, Robbie Huot MN ASDA Vice- President has greatly enjoyed being apart of the ASDA community as it has “allowed me the opportunity to tap into my passion for leadership and networking with other professionals. Get on board with ASDA and tap into your inner leader!” With all these great opportunities available, why would one not want to “cook with ASDA”. 2

Membership & Communication cid:ii_151ac4ab58f8964b MN ASDA Blog: Flossophizing This year, MN ASDA continued to make great use of the blog that we established two years ago. We switched our focus from quantity to quality in terms of posts, and focused on publishing well-written, relevant content that our members would be excited to read. In the past, we had ASDA meeting attendees write blog posts after each trip. While we continued this, we emphasized that our contributors write posts about topics from the trip that were meaningful to them and that they believe other students needed to know about. We then could post them periodically during the semester, keeping interest piqued over a longer period of time. We’ve also tried to encourage a wider variety of members to write for our blog. This has been accomplished by publishing more articles on a variety of topics. Some of the great “dishes” our blog made this year include: •Running for a National ASDA Position •ASDA Engage-make your voice heard! •The 3 A’s of Awesome •Current Trends in Dentistry •Finding Your Ideal Residency •Leading With Optimism •Energized, Informed, and Optimistic: A D1’s Experience at National Lobby Day •Fun & Free: Weekend Activities in the Twin Cities •ASDA Structure •Have you Thought About Public Health Dentistry? •No Tricks, Just Treats •Post-Grad Options: Private, Managed, Group or Corporate Practice •Fun & Free: Holiday Activities in the Twin Cities •Health & Wellness in the Retromolar Pad •Boards Study Tips 17

The bill requested an $80-100 million budget over the two year biennium. Since there will not be an official lobby day for dental students this year, this event will serve as a great informational and networking session to discuss current legislative issues in MN and what we can do to help bring attention to certain issues over the next year 29
Advocacy Initiatives MN ASDA and Licensure Reform Licensure remains a hot topic here at Minnesota. We began this year with a Licensure Panel L&L, where we invited the individual parties here at the University of Minnesota that played a role in making the changes to our licensure examination. The panel discussed the implications of changes in licensure examination at the school and what students can expect going forward. The panel consisted of UMN’s own Dean Assael, the Associate Dean of Clinical affairs Dr. Todd Thierer, Student Affairs Director Sara Johnson, the Director of Graduate Studies Dr Stephen Shuman, Asso- ciate Dean of Academic Affairs Dr Keith Mays and Associate Professor Paul Jardine. The Licensure Committee collected questions from the student body before the event and was able to have the panel directly answer students questions and concerns. The Licensure committee also hosts their annual Licensure L&L, this year on December 11, to discuss the new changes happening to licensure at the University of Minnesota School of Den- tistry. Here’s what our Licensure Chair and District 8 Trustee has to say about licensure: ! We’re seeing immense change with dental licensure. It may seem that the sentiment is getting a little old, as people have espoused the same thing for a long time now, but I truly believe it to be the case. As we came into the year, licensure was being heavily discussed because substantial changes were coming down the turnpike. OSCE was on the tips of everyone’s tongues, uncertainty floating in the air about the prospects that for some weren’t even a year further down the road. ! Administration and faculty at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry have been in robust discussions with Central Re- gional Dental Testing Service (CRDTS) to explore other pathways to licensure for current and future students. Much ado has been made in the last couple years regarding Curriculum Integrated Format (CIF) models of testing. More specifically, the University of New York at Buffalo’s interpretation of the process has garnered much attention. The Buffalo Model begins to shift focus to longitudinal patient care while still ensuring competency of the practitioners. It’s almost the antithesis of the “one-shot” type of exam to which dental students and dentists have grown accustomed. Such a dramatic shift away from the traditional quandaries associated with the current exam structure has done much to pique the interest of schools and students nationwide. Our School of Dentistry sees this as an opportunity to help construct change in the system. It’s possible that as soon as this fall there will be a pilot exam model where students won’t feel much different than any other day in the clinic. As the OSCE is our global competency exam for graduation, Minnesota has seen some significant shifts in the landscape. On the local level, we’re working to keep our members as up to date as possible on what their experience will entail. In September we had a brief update on the current state of licensure and a presentation in December followed, going into more depth about the history of licensure as well as elaborating on the Buffalo Model, the ADA House of Delegates and licensure resolutions, and the future here at the U of M. While we continue to strive for ethically sound and valid testing, students, faculty, and administration will be working to construct and exam that begins to reflect the true spirit of a Curriculum Integrated Format. Change is actually happening in licensure as we speak. Our students have and will experience new experiences than their predecessors and understand that progress does occur and, at times, with rapid pace. We are keeping our student members engaged in the topic at MN ASDA and we will be at the table as things move forward! Aaron Henderson 30
