Included are commendations, recognitions, appreciations, disciplinary actions and complaint dispositions for sworn and civilian personnel. Officer Chris Maybody 7/02/2018 Appreciation letter for recovering a stolen firearm and some heirloom items. Lieutenant Alejandro Cabrera 7/02/2018 Appreciation and commendation letters for addressing issues quickly and courteously within the city of Richlawn. Officer Adam Huber 7/02/2018 Commendation letter for his exceptional response to a vehicle accident and professional representation of LMPD. Officer Jeffery Haddock 7/02/2018 Commendation letter for his exemplary response to a citizen running late to her son's Lacrosse game. He helped her park then took her to the correct field on a golf cart. Lieutenant Drew Wagner; Sergeants Andy 7/02/2018 Commendation letter for their first-rate Abbott, Lowell Watson, Rob Kaelin, Matthew assistance during the Citizens Police Staples, Clayton Elliott, Ed Goins; Detectives Academy (CPA). The success of the Robyn Jennings, Jason Moseley, Mark Bramer, CPA depends on their assistance, and J.C. Wilkins, Dave Dahl; Officers Chad Crick, they each exceed expectations in their Troy Prechtel, Dan Alpiger, Kevin Lewis; Ms. specific fields, are well organized, and Renee Stigall and Mr. David Foster project a professional image. Detective Joe Nett 7/02/2018 Commendation letter for his highly regarded detective work during May of 2018. He cleared nine cases, eight of which were felonies. Lieutenant Michael O'Neil; Sergeants Trey 7/02/2018 Commendation letter for their security McKinley, David Peters, Sean Walsh, Todd provisions throughout the 2018 Kentucky Wingfeld, William Vogt; Officers Scott Beck, Derby events. Their work resulted in very Dusten Dean, David Eades, Ryan Forgey, Matt little crime reported during Thunder Over Gammons, Martez Hughes, Ben Klingenfus, Louisville, allowed for an undisrupted Matt Middleton, Daryl Neese, Dexter Pitts, Pegasus Parade, and ensured travelers Jorge Soto-Perez, Sean Verdi and William Wolf and pedestrians moved safely and expeditiously during Oaks and Derby. 1
Detective Matthew Mount, Officers JaPaul 7/02/2018 Commendation letter for their Jones and Percy Minor apprehension of three burglary suspects, resulting in the closure of four residential burglary cases. Officer Amber Ross 7/02/2018 Commendation letter for her laudable work with the "No Girl Lost" program. She organized a dance for 185 girls, getting them donated formal dresses, jewelry, food, prizes, and t-shirts with the “No Girl Lost” logo. Officers John Seymour and Michael 7/02/2018 Commendation letter for their leadership Cheeseman during the Louisville Metro Police Department’s Sniper School provided to St. Matthews Fire and Rescue. Detective Matthew Mount, Officers JaPaul 7/02/2018 Commendation letter for their outstanding Jones and Percy Minor police work after arresting a subject for seven business burglaries. Officers Michael Abernathy and Lorin Byerly 7/02/2018 Commendation letter for their praiseworthy investigation after a manager found drugs and weapons on his property. The officers work yielded additional contraband, including copious rounds of ammunition, high-powered weapons and dangerous narcotics. One suspect was arrested and charged accordingly. Officers Zachary Cottongim and Shaun Sargent 7/02/2018 Commendation letter for their remarkable response when they observed several subjects conducting hand to hand transactions. They were arrested and charged with Trafficking in Synthetic Drugs and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Officer Clayton Poff 7/02/2018 Commendation letter for his significant efforts during May of 2018. He served five bench warrants, made three felony arrests, two misdemeanor arrests and completed seven reports. 2
Officer Mike Neal 7/02/2018 Commendation letter for his superior investigative efforts that started with a set of found keys. He discovered a burglary occurred in which the keys and other items were stolen. Officer Neal checked nearby security videos and identified the suspect, who was charged with burglary and possession of a stolen vehicle. Detective Bryan Wilson 7/02/2018 Commendation letter for his top-notch assistance to the Special Victims Unit during the execution of a search warrant. Detective Wilson located the suspect, as well as large amounts of dangerous narcotics and paraphernalia, and evidence of money laundering. The ensuing investigation resulted in seized assets pursuant to law. Nominated for the Exceptional Merit Award. Officers Austin Allen, Clayton Poff and Esther 7/02/2018 Commendation letter for their valiant Ragan response when they responded to the sounds of gunshots. They immediately detained a subject fleeing the area and applied a tourniquet to the victim’s leg in order to save his life. Nominated for the Distinguished Lifesaving Award. Detective Shelby Sears 7/11/2018 Appreciation letter for his admirable assistance to the Jeffersonville Police Department with a search warrant. Officers Lindsey Cline, Jonathan Story, Ryan 7/11/2018 Appreciation letter for improving the Noland and Jarod Hummer safety and living environments for neighborhood residents. Officer Lamont Washington 7/11/2018 Commendation letter for his excellent presentation to the Chief's Accountability Committee. The information he provided was very well received. Officers Steve Pond, John Livers, Kyle 7/11/2018 Commendation letter for their exceptional Meredith, Stephanie Spaulding and Joshua work that led to the arrest of eight Durairaj different people over the course of two nights in the same location. They also seized a handgun, drug paraphernalia, and recovered multiple stolen vehicles. 3
Officer Shane Justis 7/11/2018 Commendation letter for his exemplary arrest of a driver in a stolen vehicle with a handgun hidden under the driver's seat. Officers Demetrius Latham, Percy Minor and 7/11/2018 Commendation letter for their Joshua Trumbo extraordinary apprehension of two dangerous offenders and the seizure of two firearms. Officers Michael Burns, Brian Evanoff and 7/11/2018 Commendation letter for their first-rate Daniel Weedman apprehension of two suspects wanted for murder. One suspect was arrested outside of his residence, the other leaving a corner store. Officer Michael Varcoe 7/11/2018 Commendation letter for his highly regarded work throughout the month of May 2018. His self-initiated activities yielded several firearm seizures and narcotic arrests. Sergeant Christina Beaven and Officer Rob 7/11/2018 Commendation letter for their impressive Oliver investigation that shut down a volatile location, which had been the source of nearly 100 calls for service and self- initiated activity. A myriad of charges - from criminal trespassing to a recent shooting - have been documented. Detective Brenda Wescott 7/11/2018 Commendation letter for her incomparable response when being tasked with conducting an audit of the Cold Case Unit's archived files. Her passion for justice and keen investigative skills led to the arrest of two people responsible for murdering a toddler more than nine years ago. Detective Jeremy McGill 7/11/2018 Commendation letter for his laudable work on a homicide investigation. Through strong investigative work, multiple interviews and keen evidence identification, he was able to clear a homicide that would have otherwise been unsolved. Officers Tyree Williams and Joshua Arnwine 7/11/2018 Commendation letter for their notable response to a shoplifter who tried to stab a store employee. The officers broadcasted pertinent suspect information and the suspect was arrested on a bus ten blocks from the scene. 4
Officers Kyle Jordan and Brendan Darrow 7/11/2018 Commendation letter for their outstanding response to suspicious subjects trying to get inside vehicles. The suspects were apprehended after a foot pursuit, making a significant impact on thefts from the area. Officer Matthew Hayden 7/11/2018 Commendation letter for his praiseworthy efforts in developing probable cause to secure a search warrant at a dangerous location. The Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team assisted, resulting in the seizure of several guns and narcotics. Ms. Mickey Spencer 7/11/2018 Commendation letter for her remarkable response for Purple Hearts and an Airman's Medal that were stored for over 20 years and came up for disposal. She researched the medals with the organization, Purple Hearts Reunited. Her efforts have ensured the medals will be returned to their rightful owners. Ms. Claudee Grady 7/11/2018 Commendation letter for her significant assistance to a customer who called the Louisville Metro Police Department Service Center. The caller was extremely grateful for her extra effort. Officer Demetrius Latham 7/11/2018 Commendation letter for his substantial response to a suspect breaking into a vehicle, who fled on foot. The suspect was apprehended and ultimately charged with several crimes. Officer Percy Minor 7/11/2018 Commendation letter for his heroic acts that showed exemplary bravery during the apprehension of several suspects who committed serious, violent crimes during the month of June 2018. Nominated for the Medal of Valor Award. 5
Officer Thomas Franklin 7/11/2018 Commendation letter for his response to the report of a shooting. He located the unresponsive victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck. Officer Franklin administered immediate lifesaving aide, had the scene secured, and recovered the weapon. The victim was transported to the hospital and is expected to recover from his injuries. Nominated for the Distinguished Lifesaving Award. Officer David Crask 7/11/2018 Commendation letter for his valiant response when he was dispatched on an accident with an unconscious passenger. He properly assessed the passenger as suffering from an opioid overdose, and ultimately administered two doses of Narcan and other aide until Louisville Emergency Medical Services arrived. Nominated for the Distinguished Lifesaving Award, Tier 2. Lieutenants Edward Wagner, Harry Webster, 7/11/2018 Commendation letter for their admirable Kirby Shobe, Sergeants Rob Owen, Corey assistance in making Skills USA highly Robinson, Christina Beaven, Officers Rob successful this year. They displayed the Oliver, Joe Burden, Todd Boyd, Jeff Atkins, utmost levels of professionalism and Tony Mabry, Brittany Rausch, Jessica bestowed every courtesy for Governor Morrison, Cody Farmer, Katelyn Fox, George Matt Bevin and the United States McMillan, Russ Miller, Dale Gallagher, David Secretary for Education, Betsy Devos. Nominated for the Meritorious Unit Citation. Officers Jasmine Collins, Eric Owen, 7/11/2018 Commendation letter for their excellent Christopher Ellis, Derek Hayes, Demetrius apprehension of three dangerous Latham, Percy Minor, Aaron Sauer, Joshua offenders who stole a vehicle and fled Trumbo, Dustin Zimmerman, Jacob Martion, from police. All three suspects were John Keeling and K-9 Tango apprehended. Nominated for the Meritorious Unit Citation. Officer Tonya Landry 7/17/2018 Appreciation letter for her exceptional partnership with Sears Loss Prevention. She has made a significant impact at their location by assisting with multiple cases resulting in an apprehension of suspect(s) responsible for $4,000 worth of stolen merchandise. Lieutenant Jill Hume 7/17/2018 Appreciation and commendation letters for her exemplary service as a liaison between the Louisville Metro Police Department and the National Street Rod Association. Officer Michael Varcoe 7/17/2018 Commendation letter for his extraordinary response when dispatched to a simple theft report. Officer Varcoe’s tenacious investigation resulted in the arrest of an employee at the scene. Officer Erik Marshall 7/17/2018 Commendation letter for his first-rate response during the 12-mile Ruck March. Officer Marshall caught the eye of by standers when he came to attention and rendered a salute towards the American Flag. Officer Austin Allen 7/17/2018 Commendation letter for his highly regarded productivity during the month of June 2018. He made arrests that included the charges of Possession of a Handgun by a Convicted Felon, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Fleeing or Evading Police, Resisting Arrest and several Bench Warrants. 7
Officer Esther Ragan and Clayton Poff 7/17/2018 Commendation letter for the exceptional patience and composure they demonstrated during a traffic violation. Officer Matthew Swicegood 7/17/2018 Commendation letter for their laudable apprehension of a dangerous offender who had an active emergency protection order and was carrying a firearm. Officers Lenert Elzy and Richard Williams 7/17/2018 Commendation letter for their notable apprehension of a convicted felon illegally armed with a concealed handgun. Officers Lenert Elzy, Richard Williams and Ariel 7/17/2018 Commendation letter for their outstanding Saylor arrest of two suspects, the recovery of stolen property and the seizure of two rifles. Their investigative skills and follow- up allowed the owner of a stolen camper to regain his property. Detective John Chenault 7/17/2018 Commendation letter for his praiseworthy clearance of multiple cases in the month of June with 13 arrests, and the clearance of another four cases via criminal complaints. Officer Daniel Harlamert 7/17/2018 Commendation letter for his remarkable investigation of the "Highland Yard Thief." Officer Harlamert conducted surveillance on the suspect’s home and noticed an inordinate amount of lawn ornaments, many of which were stolen. Several thousands of dollars in stolen property was returned to the proper owners. 8
Officers Chris Maybody, Michael Neal, Jennifer 7/17/2018 Commendation letter for their significant Del Valle, Michael Fowler, Charles Meek and response during a theft investigation Zachary Higdon where a firearm, jewelry and other items were taken from a locked U-Haul trailer. They completed a meticulous incident report and located three suspicious subjects, one of whom was carrying the stolen gun. Officers did a knock-and-talk and recovered more stolen items, while much of the other missing property was recovered at a nearby Pawn Shop. Officers Maybody and Neal were also nominated for the Exceptional Merit Award. Sergeant Chad Tinnell 7/17/2018 Commendation letter for his superb leadership and communication skills. He recognizes the great work his officers do on a daily basis. As a leader, his squad has united into one team with one goal, to serve the community and make it a better and safer place to live. Nominated for the Commanding Officer of the Year Award. Officers Thomas Franklin, Joseph Dudzinski, 7/18/2018 Commendation letter for their response to Brett Ringswald, Chase Barnett, Timothy Huber the report of a driver being run off the and Nicholas Barnes road. The suspect then approached the victim’s window and pulled what appeared to be a gun. The suspect fled across busy traffic and threatened people’s safety, but thanks to the tactics of the officers he was apprehended. Officers Jeffery Haddock and Olivia Payne 7/18/2018 Commendation letter for their valiant response to an elderly citizen who became confused while looking for an address. They were very patient and kind. 9
Officer Jeremy Akers 7/18/2018 Commendation letter for his admirable assistance on two occasions. The first was a joint investigation and the second was assisting with a traffic holding point along with clearing the roadway. They located who were nominated for the Exceptional Merit the suspect and gave verbal orders to Award him, but he fled. A secure perimeter was set up and the suspect was apprehended. and A victim stated the suspect had entered the residence and fired at the occupants. Sergeant Christopher Watkins, Officers Justus The suspect was charged with Wanton Stuck, Michael Varcoe, Justine Bates, Juwan Endangerment 1st and Possession of a Wise and Timothy Lanham who were Firearm by a Convicted Felon (2 counts). nominated for the Medal of Valor Award. Officer David Crask 7/18/2018 Commendation letter for his extraordinary response when he encountered a residential fire. Officer Crask entered the engulfed residence and escorted two victims outside. No one was injured as a result of his bravery. Nominated for the Distinguished Lifesaving Award. Officer Darell Wagner 8/08/2018 Appreciation letter for his first-rate assistance to a distraught young male who had been reported missing several hours prior. Officer Wagner formed a rapport with him and stayed by his side, even helping the youth get into the ambulance. 10
Detective Tate Mason and Officer Alan Ware 8/08/2018 Appreciation letter for their highly regarded assistance and investigation of an assault and vehicle theft. The victim was also appreciative of their timely updates. Sergeant David Silverblatt, Detectives Mike 8/08/2018 Appreciation letter for their impressive Kim, Kelly Hanna, Officers Matt Koestel, Josh teamwork and efforts during an Seelye, Crime Scene Technicians Wendy investigation in a high-profile murder Jones and Rebecca Kimmer case. Officer Jim Clark 8/08/2018 Appreciation letter for helping a motorist with a flat tire. Officer Trent Sturgill 8/08/2018 Appreciation letter for going above and beyond when a citizen needed help with a situation involving their nephew. Officer Michael Weathers 8/08/2018 Appreciation letter for his outstanding efforts in organizing a youth baseball camp. Lieutenant Gary Burman 8/08/2018 Commendation letter for his praiseworthy assistance to the U.S. Capitol Police in protecting dignitaries during a visit to Louisville. Officers Mike Jackson and Michael Abernathy 8/08/2018 Commendation letter for serving as positive department representatives during the "Cones with Cops" event. Sergeants Chris McMichael, Detectives Antoine 8/08/2018 Commendation letter for their significant Frye, Anthony Roberts, Mike Woodard, Jeryl work in locating and capturing a homicide Tyson and Robert Holland suspect. They apprehended him without incident after gathering information and community tips. Detective Keith Heselschwerdt 8/08/2018 Commendation letter for his significant investigation concerning a domestic related shooting. The victim was incapacitated by a gunshot wound to the head, but the detective worked diligently to identify the suspect through other means. The suspect was arrested and charged With Attempted Murder (DV), Assault 1st (DV) and Burglary 1st. 11
Detective Nick Dilley 8/08/2018 Commendation letter for his superb participation during the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program. He did a phenomenal job of explaining the Sex Crime Unit's role and response to incidents involving human trafficking throughout the Louisville Metro area. Officers Lamont Washington and Matthew 8/08/2018 Commendation letter for their creative Sanders use of social media to get the word out about the positive work being done by the men and women in the Louisville Metro Police Department. Officer Jonathan Story 8/08/2018 Commendation letter for his valiant response when detectives were involved in a foot pursuit. Officers established a perimeter around the home, when Officer Story observed wires and a blasting cap that were clearly part of an explosive device. Thanks to his diligence, no one was hurt or killed. Lieutenants Edward Wagner, Emily McKinley, 8/08/2018 Commendation letter for their admirable Joel Phillips, Sergeants Ed Goins, Gregory contributions to the Clergy Citizens Police Bird, Tim Stokes, Officers Johnny Burgraff, Academy, which provides specialized John Keeling, Ms. Patsy Stigall and Mr. Travis training to bring the police and the Eicher community closer together. Sergeants John Payne, Charles Robinson, 8/08/2018 Commendation letter for their estimable Detective Kendra Burawski, Officers Logan response to the Grayson County Sheriff's Purtlebaugh, Erik Kemp, Dale Gallagher, Office regarding a possible dive Thomas Franklin, Athena Weber, Daniel operation. Their underwater searches Knable, Charles Druin and Dan Alpiger yielded several items of great evidentiary value that will assist in the prosecution of the homicide suspect. Officer Jason Burba 8/08/2018 Commendation letter for his excellent investigation of a stolen vehicle. He conducted a stop on a moped which was confirmed stolen. Questioning of the suspect led to the recovery of another stolen vehicle as well as paperwork tying the suspect to a third stolen vehicle. 12
Mr. Eric Estes 8/08/2018 Commendation letter for his exceptional work on a homicide investigation. Mr. Estes identified a suspect from a photo and conducted a thorough intelligence workup, leading to his arrest for murder. Sergeant Vic Szydlowski 8/08/2018 Commendation letter for his exemplary leadership during recent protests. The widespread potential for violence was evident as several dozen protestors, many with violent histories, arrived at an event with dangerous equipment. The incredible behind-the-scenes work by him and his team resulted in no arrests or reported injuries. Nominated for the Exceptional Merit Award. Lieutenant Jim Cirillo 8/08/2018 Commendation letter for his extraordinary leadership on the Special Response Team. He was tasked with leading the Special Response Team when nine protestors locked themselves together. He insured this incident was handled professionally and that no one was injured. Nominated for the Exceptional Merit Award. Lieutenant Mike O'Neil 8/08/2018 Commendation letter for his first-rate leadership on the Special Response Team as he dealt with a series of last minute, unique protest events. He was tasked with organizing large scale strategic plans, and all the recent events that occurred under his watch ended with no arrests or reported injuries. Nominated for the Exceptional Merit Award. Lieutenant Jill Hume 8/08/2018 Commendation letter for her skillful handling regarding the planning, staffing and logistics for the high-profile protests in downtown Louisville. She was tasked with organizing large scale strategic plans. Nominated for the Exceptional Merit Award. 13
Lieutenant Ron Heady 8/08/2018 Commendation letter for his impressive service as Incident Commander for weeks of on-going, potentially dangerous protests. This included daily monitoring of all activities, logging the actions and handling all communications with the protestors and operational command during the counter protest events. He played a significant role in the events that all ended peacefully with no arrests and no reported injuries. Nominated for the Exceptional Merit Award. Ms. Deborah Mitchell 8/08/2018 Commendation letter for her laudable leadership that resulted in the Louisville Metro Police Department’s recent reaccreditation by the Kentucky Association of Chiefs of Police. She spearheaded the Department's accreditation process. Nominated for the Exceptional Merit Award. Detective William Mayo 8/08/2018 Commendation letter for his notable investigation of a highly sought-after suspect. He located several cleverly hidden firearms while executing a search warrant and led the apprehension of the armed suspect who was also in possession of narcotics. Officers Matt Ernst, Scott Walker, Chris 8/08/2018 Commendation letter for their outstanding Kitchen, Joel Casse and David Ledbetter instruction of the 2018 Basic SWAT Course. They put in long hours preparing the course materials and meticulously laying out the course for the students. Officer Shane Justis 8/08/2018 Commendation letter for his praiseworthy arrest of a suspect for narcotics trafficking. Officer Justis’ keen observation skills led to the suspect’s arrest and lawful seizure of narcotics and currency. 14
Officers Tonya Landry and Michael Purcell 8/08/2018 Commendation letter for their remarkable response when they noticed the odor of marijuana emitting from a vehicle in front of them. Their investigation resulted in the recovery of marijuana, illegal narcotics, and a large amount of currency. Officers JaPaul Jones and Percy Minor 8/08/2018 Commendation letter for their significant apprehension of a subject who had stolen property and a firearm. Thanks to their coordinated response and planning, several bicycles were returned to their rightful owners. They also took time to visit with one juvenile’s family in an effort to deter him from future crimes. Officers Nathan Benge, David Crask and 8/08/2018 Commendation letter for their superb Detrick Briggs response when dispatched to a missing 17-year old autistic girl. Their proficient search resulted in her safe recovery. He moved the person to the floor, administered one dose of Naloxone and began rescue breathing. Sergeant Trinity Tillman 8/08/2018 Commendation letter for his highly regarded assistance to the Jeffersonville Police Department on a suspect that was wanted for a shooting. He was advised the subject was last seen going inside a store. Sgt. Tillman arrived and observed two suspects matching the description walk out of the store. He ordered them to the ground and the suspect ran back into the store. Fearing the suspect was still armed and might take hostages, Sergeant Tillman went in after him. Officer Clark reached him via cellphone and was able to persuade the consumer to walk out of the house where he was taken into custody without incident and transported to University of Louisville Hospital on the Mental Inquest Warrant. Sergeant Travis Nichols, Officers Dusten Dean, 9/12/2018 Commendation letter for their Michael Grant and Evelyn Robinson extraordinary response when they were dispatched on an apparent accidental shooting involving a two-year-old victim. Due to the critical nature of the injury, they transported the child to Norton's Children's Hospital in a police vehicle. This decision afforded the surgeons an opportunity to operate on the child and give him a chance at survival.
