> McConaughey by Micah Haley S cene’s extended interview with Matthew McConaughey included more in-depth conversation regarding Killer Joe, the dark comedy he was filming in New Orleans at the time with director William Friedkin. Though much of that conversation concerns comedy that is too dark to print, we wanted to share some of Matthew’s extended comments with you while The Lincoln Lawyer, his excellent throwback to the popular legal thrillers from the 1990s, is still in theaters. Going into its third week of release, the film continues to hold steady at the box office, thanks to good word of mouth and “Certified 83% Fresh” on film review aggregator site RottenTomatoes.com. Q: You’re here in New Orleans now filming Killer Joe. But you used to come down regularly when you were younger, correct? A: We used to come down here…when is “Blessing of the Fleet”? Is that Memorial Day or Labor Day? Whenever it is, we used to come every year for that. My dad’s mom, her sisters, they lived down in Morgan City. They’ve all passed away since, but we used to come every year. And then, I haven’t been down here since I was down here for Failure to Launch seven years ago. Q: What have you enjoyed about New Orleans versus living at home in Malibu? Matthew McConaughey in The Lincoln Lawyer A: One of the differences, and what’s neat is, there’s poverty here. This place has “a bite!” It’s got teeth! It’s not a merry wonderland of a relationship with it.” The other is, stop doing my job and go fight utopia. It’s got its way of working and the gears are greased in New the law for the next three years. Try to change the law. I don’t feel like Orleans. But it’s just great to see that the place has an identity and the doing that either. There are so many things I’d rather do. people have an identity. I had a great afternoon one time…let’s see I wrote it down here…at Q: Tell me more about Mishka, who’s on your music label. St. Michael’s School. All of the kids with physical and mental disabilities. Was he a friend of yours? I’m coming back from [working out]. I’m walking back from there, some A: No, I heard him in Jamaica in 1999, at the turn of the millennium. of them had Down Syndrome and I hit them up, and they started hitting I liked it so much I said, “I’ve got to go find this guy.” It took four years me up, and they’ve got a Christmas play coming up. I love riding my bike to find him. Called record companies, went online..no one knew where down Annunciation Street. Get some color down there. When I was here he was. for Failure to Launch down here, I was on my own. When I work it’s usually work, eat, sleep, work eat sleep. And I didn’t go out that much. But now, in Q: Was he with another record label? this area with the family, it’s been great. A: Yeah, he was with a smaller record label, but he wasn’t with the label that produced his album. And he was off sailing the Caribbean Q: It’s unique how you handled the one paparazzo that or something, y’know? It’s a cool story: four years later, I’m in Ireland was outside the house you’re staying in. I’m sure you’ve and my whole production company knows I’m looking for him, right? encountered incidents like that before. You probably know the APB out on Mischka! So I get a call from Mark Gustawes, the president best way to handle it. of my production company, and he says, “A guy named Mischka is A: I know what works for me! And I’ve been doing it for a little while. opening up for Sly and Robbie down at the House of Blues in L.A. I’ve got a few options [in dealing with the paparazzi]. One is, go back I’m going to go see if its him.” It was! So I get his number. I called to L.A. We’ll that’s going to cost a lot of money. The second is, don’t go him…I knew his music up and down, he didn’t know me from Jack. out. I’m not going to do that. And the other is move to a place where Started talking to him over the phone for a couple of weeks. We kind you can just be a hermit. I’m not going to do that. So, I said, “Alright, of became buddies over that and he invited me down to his place with I’ve got to have a relationship with it. I don’t like it, but I’ve got to have him and his family. Ten days, worked on some of his music, >

A: We started it up because I wanted to work with him legitimately, lights airstar I’d always loved the music business and I felt like I had a good ear for it. search I found out quickly I didn’t want anything to do with the management business, but I do like being in the studio, back there on the producing ti s side. That’s been fun. So, the last three albums I produced, which was nice. confet bubble It’s been fun. It’s been hard but good. Q: He’s got a great sound. A: He’s got a great, great voice, man. A good heart and good lyrics. He’s really pumping…you talk about, what is j.k. livin? That’s it. Just keep livin’. Everything it is, is “Grow, go forward with life.” Nothing ugly about it at all. It’s hard, tough. J.k. livin doesn’t mean the world’s all rosy, but I tell you what: Michael J. Francioni, C.O.O. we’re not cynical. That’s the thing we’re not. You can’t get one by us: we’re not thelightguymike@yahoo.com naïve. But cynical? No. That’s one of the toughest things I think a lot of people stave off, as they get older. Especially a lot of successful people. Baton Rouge: 225•810•8152 New Orleans: 504•282•5SKY (759) >
