USHL / YOUNGSTOWN PHANTOMS • League Overview – Only Tier I Junior “A” league in the U.S – 98% of players receive D1 scholarship – 21 of 25 2022 USA Olympic Hockey Team members played in USHL – 16 teams + USA NTDP throughout Midwest in two conferences – Zero cost to player – 400+ College committed players in 2021-2022 and more than 650 all-time NHL alumni – 50 players drafted in the 2021 NHL draft, one Youngstown Phantom (Scott Morrow, Carolina Hurricanes, 2nd round) – 21 Youngstown Phantoms players are committed to D1 programs in the 21-22 season – Adam Ingram: currently rated #14 skater in North America; projected first round NHL Draft pick • Player Selection Process: Draft and Tender Signings – USHL Draft comprised of two phases during the first week of May First phase is ten rounds of “futures” aged players only, which were U-16 the previous season (2006 birth year in May 2022); All 10 futures become “protected” on the affiliate list Phase Two Draft open to all junior-aged (17-20 yr-old) players not on active USHL rosters; teams draft ~20-25 players to fill out a 45-man protected list – Tenders: Each club allowed up to two 16 year-old “tender” signings prior to draft; these players are guaranteed a roster spot on team the following year and forfeit their 1st round pick (used sparingly) 3 TM draft picks in 2019, 3 in 2020, 2 in 2021 (8 total); 3 have played games; multiple have practiced w/team; Quinn Kennedy, 2019 TM draft pick currently full-time on Phantoms roster Intent: Retain exceptional American players in U.S. instead of playing Canadian Major Junior • Open Camp and Main Camp – May/June - Undrafted players attend open tryout camps to earn invites to main camp – Main Camp (invite only) – Veteran returning players, draft selections and invites from open camps compete for roster spots at main camp – By August 27, 2022: teams pare down to a 30-man protected and 19-man affiliate list Affiliate list comprised of draft picks: ten 16 year-olds, five 17 year-olds, and three 18 year-olds – Final Roster: 25 active players and the affiliate list remains at 18 throughout the year 8
NAHL / MARYLAND BLACK BEARS • League Overview – Only Tier II Junior “A” hockey league recognized by USA Hockey – Consists of 4 divisions, 29 teams, 60 regular season games – Previous 6 seasons: 1,800 NAHL NCAA Commitments, and 30+ NAHL Alumni selected into NHL – 20-21 Season: 330 NCAA Commitments; 70% D1 Commitments. 3 NAHL Alumni selected in 2021 NHL Draft – 13 Maryland Black Bears players have committed to NCAA programs during the 21-22 season (12 D1, 1 D3) • Player Selection Process: Draft and Tender Signings – Tenders: After Nov. 1 each club allowed ten “tender” signings prior to June draft (7 unrestricted, 2 NAPHL, 1 NA3) Tender-signings are protected for the following season (no age restriction) Intent: Protect top prospects prior to the June NAHL draft and try-outs – NAHL Draft occurs during the first week of June allowing for players to attend “pre-draft” open camps Eligible junior-aged (16-20 yr-old) players not on NAHL protected list drafted to fill out a 30-man roster – Likely will tender/draft 2-3 TM players in 2022 • Open Camp and Main Camp – May/June – Free agent players attend open tryout pre-draft camps to earn main camp invites As an example, the Black Bears identified top performers at open camps last year and signed its final tenders at pre-draft open camps to protect players from being selected in the upcoming draft – Main Camp (invite only) – Veteran returning players, tender signings, draft selections and invites from open camps compete for roster spots at main camp – Final Roster: 24 active players and 12-man affiliate list The USA Hockey Affiliate Player Program allows NAHL teams to utilize midget birth-year players during the season without having to add the player to their official 24-man Protected List Affiliates may be added / dropped throughout the year 9
