A new law has broadened the definition of violence to recognise – and criminalise – physical, psychological, sexual and financial abuse against women, with special provisions against sexual harassment in public spaces. But this hasn’t stopped Arabic and Kurdish women from joining Yekîneyên Parastina Jin (Women Protection Units). These battalions of women are helping the Syrian Democratic Forces prevent ISIL from gaining ground in the northern Syrian region of Rojava.
