Words from Home... Perry Hancock Ph.D. President & CEO Some of us are old enough to remember Art Linkletter, the host of the original TV Kids do say the funniest things. At times, however, they ask the most intriguing show, Kids Say The Darndest Things. Mr. Linkletter interviewed school-aged children questions. I remember a time at Easter when we were teaching the children about the and asked them about their thoughts on a number of subjects. Many of their responses meaning of the resurrection. The passage was I Thessalonians 4:14 which reads, “For were simply hilarious. we believe that Jesus died and rose again...” One little girl leaned over to me and asked, “When did Jesus rise the first time?” I didn’t understand her question until she ex- At the Children’s Home our kids often say the funniest things. When one of our boys saw the stripes on the meat, he said, explain. It wasn’t. “I didn’t know that we were having zebra meat today. I’ve never tried it before.” Later, as I reflected on that experience, I felt blessed to be a part of what God is doing in the hearts and lives of our children at LBCH. We’re telling them about Jesus who loves them, died for them, and, yes, rose again. Moments like that could not happen without your faithful and generous support. Through your love and care, lives are being changed every day at the Children’s Home. You make it possible for our children to experience real love, real peace, and real hope in Christ. Thank you so much! I do pray that you and your family have a wonderful Easter celebration at church this year. I also pray that the Lord will bless you as you have blessed His children at your Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home. “Look! The Ocean!” –Quote from a five-year-old during a recent outing to Black Bayou. PRAYER CALENDAR... Campus Spotlight: Crystal, Morgan and Jayden By Debbie Robertson, HomeNews Writer ….He will give you your heart’s desires. Psalm 37:4 Crystal and daughters Morgan and Jayden are happily catching up on the activ- ities of the day. Morgan (11) gives a step-by-step description of today’s lab experi- ment. She’s excited by a project using everyday ingredients that, when combined, changed colors and eventually created a small explosion. Another fun activity in their study of chemical reactions is scheduled for tomorrow. Jayden (8), still known for her love of gymnastics, is in constant motion—hanging off the bed, doing somer- saults, and even practicing her splits—as she tells about her day. Crystal adds that Joseph, who is 12, still lives with his grandparents. “He’s almost as tall as me now,” Crystal says proudly, and she looks forward to frequent visits with him. Since HomeNews readers were first introduced to this little family, there have been several exciting changes. In August, they were fairly new to the Campus and still adjusting to new routines and new rules. Fast forward to March, and Crystal loves being able to tell how blessed she and her family are to be part of HomePlace and how they have grown in their faith during this time. I even prayed that maybe we could meet in the middle. But sometimes you have to Crystal and her girls have moved into a larger living area, which they all love. Christian Women’s Job Corps of Monroe Is Newest WorldCrafts Artisan Group... Christian Women’s Job Corps of Monroe (CWJC) has become the newest WorldCrafts artisan group. In addition to providing job and life skills training, Christian mentoring, and HiSET preparation and testing, CWJC participants now have the opportunity to become artisans for WorldCrafts. WorldCrafts is the fair trade division of National Women’s Missionary Union (WMU). As a Fair Trade Federation member, WorldCrafts works with artisan groups both in the United States and throughout the world to develop viable products and then market those products here in the United States. Through these partnerships, artisans are able to break free of poverty as they earn a living wage. There are currently six CWJC groups nationwide who have a Worldcrafts program. CWJC of Mon- roe has two Worldcrafts artisans who are currently crafting a beautiful Micah 6:8 mug that is featured in the Worldcrafts product catalog at www.worldcrafts.org/catalog. Each mug is personally created and prayed over by one of our artisans and then boxed with a card enclosed and signed by the artisan. Tonya Hancock, Executive Director of CWJC of Monroe, shared, “Our partnership with WorldCrafts gives each artisan the opportunity to work in a safe, loving environment while providing income for their families.” Executives from Worldcrafts headquarters in Birmingham, Alabama, along with women’s ministry leaders from the Louisiana Baptist Convention, WMU leaders from Texas and a Worldcrafts team from First Baptist Church Minden, recently visited with our CWJC class. The ladies came to share, learn and encourage our stu- dents and artisans. Our artisans offered a brief demonstration of how their products are made. CWJC of Monroe artisans are one of the few artisan groups that have the capability to create custom items for individuals and businesses. Tonya Hancock shared, “Our artisans have made and sold over 1,000 items since January 1, 2019.” HomeNews - March/April 2019 • PAGE 3

Forsythe Park was filled with about 85 members of the University of Louisiana at Monroe’s Kappa Delta Sorority during the wee hours of March 23. The group gathered bright and early to pre- pare for the 275 that would show up to participate in their annual Shamrock Color Run fundraiser benefiting the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home. The weather was perfect as participants arrived to a festive atmosphere of music, games, a photo booth and breakfast, compliments of McDonald’s. The race began at 9:00 and runners, walk- ers, and a few four-legged friends made their way through the 5K course where they were showered with color at several points. There were some very colorful finishers! Michaela Hemphil, Kappa Delta Vice President of Community Service and this year’s Shamrock Run coordinator, shared that “The sorority chose to support LBCH because our goal is to promote confidence and what better way than to help and support women, children, and families locally.” Kappa Delta Chapter President, Joanna Franklin, added that, “Being a part of something so much bigger than yourself is something I have always cherished from being a part of Kappa Delta. Living Hope! “Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. According to His great mercy, He has given us a new birth into a living hope through the Easter 2019 resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” – 1 Peter 1:3 Dear Friend of Children, Nina* will be beaming with joy when she discovers her first prize egg at our annual Easter egg hunt. This will probably be her first Easter egg ever. This adorable eight-year-old came into our care about six months ago. Nina loves her parents, but they are unable to care for her at this time because of long-term drug abuse. On Easter Sunday, Nina will be dressed in her new Easter outfit. Her clothes will be the prettiest she has ever owned. At her church, Nina and the other children will hear the Easter story. They will be told of the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ and how God’s great love changes lives forever. Nina’s cottage parents are teaching her the ABCs of salvation. She’s asking lots of questions and learning what it means to trust Jesus as her own personal Savior. Your generosity this Easter makes it possible for children like Nina to have a loving, caring home – one that’s safe from hurt. Your support helps provide the beautiful new clothes and shoes our children receive as part of their Easter experience here at the Home. Most of all, you’re providing an opportunity for us to share the living hope of our resurrected Lord. Your gift this Easter will help change a life! Please know how grateful I am for your prayers and generosity. I pray you and your family will have a wonderful Easter! For the Children, Perry Hancock, Ph.D. President & CEO P.S. Highlights from HomePlace... Susan Clark Director of HomePlace Autumn has always been my favorite season, but this year, Spring is closing the lead very quickly. I guess I forget how beautiful Spring is because of the yellow clouds that hover over and eventually releases an outpouring of a thing called pollen. Need I say more? At the beginning of Spring, our days and nights are approximately twelve hours long, with day hours lengthening and night hours shortening as the season progresses. After all these years, I have just received an epiphany of why I am so tired in Spring. First off, Day Light Savings Time forces me to SPRING forward and with the days lengthening and the nights shortening, it only stands to reason that I am working longer and sleeping less. Also, Spring cleaning was taught to my generation as well and I know what a toll it takes on the body. So there you have it…. my synopsis of why people struggle at the be- ginning of this time of year. Although Spring is a term relating to a temperate climate, a calendar season, a nat- ural stream of water, a coil when released comes back to its original form and an ener- gized movement forward, it also expresses a time of rebirth, regrowth, and resurrection. Martin Luther stated, "Our Lord has written the promise of resurrection, not in books alone, but in every leaf in springtime." It is obvious to the naked eye what God does in the earth through His seasons. Spring is a time that God awakens our senses to things around us and breathes new life into areas that need rejuvenating. He presents hope and renewal to the winter in our lives. And of course, the best part is the Easter Story that gives us the promise of everlasting life because of Jesus’s crucifixion and resurrec- tion. This is what gives life meaning and direction to each one of us who has accepted His invitation to become a new creation through His overwhelming love. Since our last newsletter, one mom accepted Jesus Christ as her personal, lifelong Savior. She also enrolled in Christian Women’s Job Corps and passed the reading portion of her HiSET. Five mothers purchased vehicles. This has never happened in HomePlace’s history. Two moms exited HomePlace to independent living in their new homes. One mom started Delta Community College. HomePlace hired two new staff members. Grace Cottage has been newly renovated and will reopen this month. We are looking forward to the opening of Irma’s Place which should be completed this Spring. Our first Home- Place Together Gathering this Spring was spent cooking out and playing outdoor games. Someone once said, “Some old-Fashioned things like fresh air and sunshine are hard to beat.” HomePlace is a gift from God that allows Spring to become a reality in the lives of so many families no matter what definition you choose.…but most importantly, it offers a time of starting over again, growth, and for many moms and their children, an atmos- phere of invitation to everlasting life through an encounter with Jesus Christ. These fam- ilies have experienced His love in so many ways, beginning with recognition of the provisional hand of our Lord. I just wish that I could put into words so you could get a glimpse of what takes place in these families’ lives when they walk onto the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home’s campus. From every prayer that you pray to every gift that you give, lives are forever changed. Thank you for being a part of HomePlace. Now go rest and restore from the loss of sleep during this season and awaken to the victory and truth that HE IS RISEN!!! "Our Lord has written the promise of resurrection, not in books alone, but in every leaf in springtime." –Martin Luther HomeNews - March/April 2019 • PAGE 7
