This has been secured for the AGM and ongoing club events The AGM is your chance to have your say in the running of the club in the future, so please attend even if you have not been to an AGM before; we would love to see you all there. The committee is currently looking at ways to re introduce club meetings at the above venue, perhaps in a new format with ideas to encourage our members to attend, perhaps even a supper - meet, greet and eat. Please contact a committee member with any ideas you may have or bring them to the AGM. Happy Flying; Grahame Hart Addendum: In last month’s Torque, Andrew Palmer’s being awarded the overall RC Scale Champion at the Nationals was missed out. Evidently, it was mistakenly awarded to the wrong competitor at prize giving. 2

Lake Station Aerotow February 12 –14th St Arnaud, Nelson Lakes Words by Dave Griffin; Photos by Ian Harvey A very successful aerotow event was flown recently at Lake Station near St Arnaud and the Nelson Lakes National Park. 25 flies from as far afield as Waiheke Island and Inver- cargill attended, with some 59 scale gliders of all sizes from 2 metres up to 9m, plus sev- eral tow planes . Three days of lovely weather with little wind, clear skies and good ther- mals. The gliders were towed as high as 500m above the grass runway with many able to climb as high as our NOTAM allowed at 2000’. It is expected this will become an annual event. Most of the pilots are briefed by Dave Griffin at this great soaring site. In consultation with the Soaring Liaison Officer it has been agreed that Free Flight can be flown on Sat- urday mornings if so desired. This will allow two opportunities each week to :- 1. Get a morning with little wind and suitable for flying. 2. Fly for NDC and/or NZ Free Flight Championships points. HOWEVER, this is dependent on contact being made with the soaring group (if present) on arrival to sort out a suitable area to fly from that will not interfere with their activities. Both NDC Free Flight and Vintage Free Flight events can be flown on either or both days. We have one weekend left in February to fly any of the following events:- Feb/21 108 VINT FF Vintage Power Duration Feb/21 109 VINT FF Nostalgia Power Duration Feb/21 110 VINT FF Nostalgia Rubber Duration Feb/21 111 VINT FF Classic Rubber Duration Feb/21 207 FF P30 Feb/21 208 FF Open Power Feb/21 209 FF FAI F1A Glider Feb/21 210 FF 1/2 A Power Feb/21 211 FF Open Tissue Feb/21 212 FF FAI F1L Indoor Rubber Feb/21 213 FF FAI FIB Rubber TOMBOY is also scheduled for Sunday 28 February! Gary’s Hangar 13 By Allan Knox Some of you may remember Gary Burrows’ bare frame for another Hangar 13. No one wanted it and I couldn’t let it be thrown out. I figured I could make a useable Vintage Open Texaco competition model out of it. Gary would approve I’m sure although he was planning much more power from a Saito 46 I think. This one will have one of the frugal PAW 2.5cc twin ball raced RC motors used very successful- ly by a number of Texaco fliers. This is all new territory for me as I have always preferred the simplicity of an OS20FS. Trouble is the OS just isn’t fuel efficient enough for Open Tex, the most demanding Texaco class. Gary cleverly designed the airplane to breakdown into many parts . A two piece wing and removable fin and tailplane as well as removable landing gear. So it is very transportable and is easy to cover. I seem to have done a lot of re-engineering but a lot of it probably isn’t needed as Gary had done a pretty good job and kept it light too. The wing now bolts on, the tail has been strengthened and there is a new engine mount and cowl among other refinements. The Hangar 13 is a very old design going way back to 1936. It was originally a 10 footer and had to make do with just ¼ HP Sparky, typically a Brown Junior. Apparently it needed two wing men on its take off run and would finally outpace them and wallow into the air where it gracefully climbed out, al- beit slowly. This would have been Gary’s second Hangar 13. The first one is the Blue beast in this picture from the club site ( John Ensoll’s fabulous New Ruler in the foreground.) It’s a strange looking machine but it’s growing on me. It needs the bright colour scheme I think. I have the motor half way through running in as I write this. It needs an hour of run in time on an oily mix. Its doing 5 minutes at 5,500 RPM on a 10 by 6. Once run in I can halve the oil and increase the paraffin which is the energy. I’m hoping the run time will increase out to 7 to 8 minutes although ideally I need about 10 minutes and lots of height to glide out to 15 minutes total flight. Only time will tell whether she will do the numbers. Thanks Gary for an interesting model. I’ll need you to watch over the first flight where ever you are. Lost-foam method was used for the cowling. 7
By Allan Knox Waitangi Day - Vintage RC flying The forecast looked good for Waitangi Monday and since it was a public holiday we could fly NDC. Fortunately Lynn was keen so we head- ed out early to the field in beautiful calm sunny conditions. Lynn and I both have new PAWs to run in so he had his test stand and ran some fuel through his 09. Mine is a 2.5 cc R/C version in Gary’s Allan’s 1/2A Skipper. Hangar 13. An oldie but a goodie. Lynn flew first in 1/2A Atomiser when it finally agreed to run well. It ran very well and was soon very high, too high! Then disaster struck as the elevator seemed to quit and, when spinning it down, the wing broke. We found most of the bits, all bar the wing half which hung up in lift. By the time we got back to the car Lynn was already scheming out the repairs. You can’t keep a good man down. I flew my elderly Skipper, now in its 15th year of continuous use. The key to this event is a reliable Cox Babe Bee and they can be very difficult to set up. The Skipper maxed out as usual. Next up was E Rubber Tex using my Senior Dart, a 30 inch Comet Kit scaled up to 60 inches. Not a very stable model being a low winger but it thermals well given half an opportunity. The air was pretty tough. Not a puffy cloud in sight and a typical anticyclonic day with low lapse rates so thermals didn’t have much go. Still, the second flight was OK at 17 minutes. John Beresford flew his 1/2A Simplex although that pesky little Cox Babe Bee was being a pain. We figured out it leaned out as the tank went down so had to be set rich at the start. By Ian Harvey On Saturday the 20th of February, several who could make it, turned up to fly ALES 123 and X5J. A clear sky and a light westerly pushed through some boomer thermals at times, and some of us had problems getting the gliders out of the sky. I was great to see Keith Elliott now resident in Canterbury, but his NDC scores still go to Wellington. He flew a rugged Radian (see photo) that flew well when the lift was around and achieved a MAX in his second flight in ALES 123. Allan Knox and Peter France flew on the Sunday afternoon in similar conditions. There were some impressive scores in this event, with the top scores being within a few points of each other. Despite numerous repairs and extensive fuselage strengthening, he was able to fly one of the 3 MAXes in the ALES123 competi- tion. If any members wish to fly their Radian in the Soar Champs on the 5, 6, 7th of March at Tai Tapu in the ALES Radian or other suitable electric events, enter and come out and have a go! At the time of going to press, there is still one NDC event that has not been flown this month—Class A (6 min duration) to be flown off a winch or hand-tow. If you want to put in a score, get in touch with the soar- ing liaison officer, and we could fly on Saturday morn- ing. 10

by Bill Long N.D.C. events for this month were F.1.L The next meeting will be on Sunday 14th of March. The events are HLG and Hanger Rat. Also and Open tissue. both these event are to be part of the South Island All three of us flew F1L (EZB) and times were Free Flight Champs which are on the 24th and good considering that all our models are over- 25th of July. weight. To add to that I know Kay and I tried to run These Indoor events are on at the Templeton with too much Rubber. I know this because at my Community Centre at 64 Kirk Road; at this stage first nationals I used a smaller (lighter) motor and run between 3.30. & 5.30pm. So it would be a good the competition that was there, was not far behind opportunity to come and see if you want to hone me in times. Pressure was applied by some about running a larger motor but I didn’t make any chang- es to my rubber weight and I took out the contest. The shame for me was that those top guys don’t fly this indoor class any more. What I am saying here is the total flying weight should only be 2.2 grams. Meaning to carry a one gram motor your model must be only 1.2 grams; not an easy feat. Open Tissue was also on the NDC calendar for this month and is too tough to fly two events for a 2 hour meeting. Nev got one time in but Kay and I ran out of time. I will make an effort to get this changed next year. Times were: F1L: Bill, Long: 9 min 38 sec & 7 min 28 sec. Kay Long: 6 min 33 sec &6 min 35 sec. Nev Robinson: 5 min 56 sec. Open tissue: Nev, 5min 33 sec. Nev concentrates on his F1L EZB Mylar creation Check out these two recent YOUTUBE videos by Alex Hewson.
