PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE GOOD EVENING & WELCOME! Is anyone besides me ready to break away, escape for a few hours, and enjoy some good-hearted, wholesome fun? While it seemed like a long, cold and isolating winter, we are finally into spring! And with spring comes longer days, fresh air, warmth, relaxed COVID-19 restrictions, and the hope that things will be better ‘Tomorrow’! Annie has been a popular Broadway show since the late 70’s and was made into a movie in the 80’s. It is a timeless story of innocence, hope, and determination, as well as a search for truth, relationships, and trust. Annie reminds me of the power of holding onto hope for my wishes and dreams, and overcoming the roadblocks, the adversity, and the unscrupulous until I reach them. The message I hear as we cheer for Annie is “never give up on your dreams, because there are better days to come, Tomorrow!” I hope you will enjoy today’s performance and appreciate the work and commitment that the cast and crew have given to bring us today’s performance. Their talents and dedication are sincerely valued and appreciated! If you have not already heard, we have just announced our 33rd season’s Main Stage productions. I am very excited for the line-up! In addition, we will be announcing the productions for our BMO Theatre stage in the very near future. Truly a diverse and exceptional line-up of shows put on by imaginative, talented and passionate theatre makers. The smaller theatre venue offers the audience an intimate and unique theatre experience. Please sit back and enjoy today’s performance. - George Daniel, SJTC Board President www.saintjohntheatrecompany.com 5
DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE SCOTT THOMAS (DIRECTOR) Scott works at UNBSJ where he dreams of golf or biking. Recent creative efforts include Fundy Fringe shows Approaching Magnificent and Mashup, The Musical. Recent directorial efforts include Circle Mirror Transformation and Dead Man’s Cell Phone (Theatre 6 Presents) and It’s A Wonderful Life (SJTC). Recent acting roles SJTC’s The Crucible (John Proctor) and Little Shop of Horrors (The Dentist). Scott hosts the Empty Stocking Fund and the long-running RogersTV program Cheese, Monkey, Box, Pirate. WE ALL HAVE TO GROW UP. Whether or not we are “children at heart”, eventually the boundless optimism of youth gives way to the frustrations and cynicism of adulthood. And if that truth is not enough, our current period of history seems determined to remind us that carefree existences can drastically be altered by disruptive pandemics, divisive politics, and soul-crushing global conflicts. The concept of a “sunny tomorrow” can seem very unlikely. Annie transports us to one of the history’s greatest disasters – the Great Depression. This time of great social upheaval included the loss of family, loss of resources, and the loss of community. It was a calamity which cast a shadow over the entirety of society – from billionaires to orphans, from public servants to private secretaries, from the lowliest orphan to the President of the United States. For this very reason, it is important that we look beyond the simple charms and cotton candy sensibilities of a show like Annie to remember the crucial importance of the core message. At times of great social and personal turmoil, humans still have the power to dream and together create a brighter tomorrow. Finding our way out of the gloomy present can seem impossible but there are simple things we can do that send positive ripples in all directions. Treat others as we would like to be treated, share kindness with one another especially when it is difficult, and remember that there is more in this world that unites us than divides us. We would do well to take Annie’s advice. To stick out our collective chin and grin and make tomorrow sunnier than today. It’s only a day away. 6 Main Stage 2021 - 2022 Season
