B U L M E R S " - S U P P O R T I N G A M A T E U R GOLF IN I R E L A N D By Charlie Mulqueen (The Irish Examiner) IT was hardly surprising that Lindsay Shanks, Chairman of the Ulster Branch of the GUI, should be wearing a broad smile at the end of another memorable Bulmers Irish Cups and Shields festival at Lahinch. Four of the five pennants were heading north with Roe Park and Kilkeel savouring the delights of breakthrough victories in the Pierce Purcell and Jimmy Bruen Shields and Shandon Park completing just about the only distinction that had eluded them in the past forty years - the Barton Shield and Irish Senior Cup double. From the time the venue was announced, it was perfectly clear that Lahinch would provide the ideal venue for the finals. And so it proved. Record crowds turned up to savour both the golf and the unique atmosphere of the greatest golfing town in the country if not these islands. It all began with a sixth Barton Shield triumph for Shandon Park. Neil Anderson was there to lend his combination of experience and magnificent ball striking as he Higgins. and his colleagues disposed of the best efforts of Connemara, Roe Park, the golf club attached to the Radisson Hotel at who gave them a great match in the semi-finals, and Co Limavady, came up against a more experienced Beech Park side in the Louth, who failed to discover their best form in the decider final of the Pierce Purcell Shield but emerged as the most emphatic and were well beaten. It was the first step in Shandon's winners. And there was further elation for Ulster when Kilkeel pursuit of the double but they weren't too sanguine about marched to a hugely impressive triumph in the Jimmy Bruen Shield. their prospects in the Senior Cup given that Anderson left They dealt more than capably with the opposition of both Strandhill Lahinch immediately on the first leg of a long arranged and The Heath. They had overcome a determined and Moate, had yet to win the title and in the end it was challenge from an unrated Ballybunion team in the semi-finals and were Moate who prevailed, beating Monkstown in the final by 3-1 up against Elm Park, conquerors of the well fancied Co Sligo and with one called in. However, there was no doubt that Michael Hoey was his side's hero - and how fitting this should be the case. His father, Brian, was already the holder of seven medals and two uncles, Michael and Dermot Hoey, had seven more between them, all with Shandon. Young Michael found himself three down in the semi-finals against Ballybunion's John O'Donnell. He prevailed on the 19th. In the final, he was two behind David Dunne after twelve. He birdied three of the next four and won the match on the 17th. The double was theirs and Shandon Park were well entitled to celebrate.
