really only flown in an official
capacity on ships, forts and
government buildings. “In the
antebellum period, if a ci�zen
had flown his flag on his house
or carriage, people would have
thought that was strange.
Why is he doing that? He's not
the government,” said Ansoff,
president of the North American
Vexillological Associa�on.
The outbreak of war in 1861
quickly changed Americans’
a�tudes about displaying the flag.
"At the beginning of the Civil
War there was an outburst of
patrio�sm,” Ansoff said, “and very
soon, you saw people flying flags
everywhere to show their support
for the cause."

Military Expands
The U.S. Space Force now has a flag. The flag of the nationʼs newest
military branch was unveiled May 15, 2020 during a ceremony in the Oval
Office. This is the first new military flag released in 72 years. It will stand
in the Oval Office alongside the flags from the other military service
branches. Look for it soon in parades and color guard ceremonies.

layer and individual le�ers are hand cut and sewn on the
front and back side of the flag to create the image (kind of like
quil�ng). Applique is used for indoor and outdoor applica�ons,

cra�sman process of construc�on produces an elegant flag and
