                                      Safe surgeries

You need to be registered with a GP surgery to receive the COVID-19
vaccination. If you are worried about registering with a GP practice due to your
immigration status you can register at one of four ‘Safe Surgeries’ in Brighton &
                                      Hove.

‘Safe Surgeries’ work hard to ensure that lack of identification, proof of address,
immigration status or language are not barriers to patient registration. These
                                      surgeries are:

                                          1. Wellsbourne Healthcare, East Brighton
                                          2. St Peter’s Medical Centre, Brighton
                                          3. Brighton & Hove Health and Wellbeing Centre, Hove
                                          4. Arch Healthcare, Brighton

These four practices have signed up to be 'Safe Surgeries' in partnership with
Doctors of the World UK, who work to reduce barriers that some people may
face when trying to access health services.

Reception staff at each of the four practices will be able to arrange an
interpreter if a person has difficulty communicating in English. Reception staff
will not ask a person about their immigration status.

                                      Remember your medication this Easter

Local GP practices will be closed over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend - on
Friday 2 April and Monday 5 April - so remember to order your repeat
                                      prescriptions well in advance.

If you need regular, routine medicines take action now by checking what you
need and requesting a prescription from your GP Practice. By doing this it
will help the local out of hours services that are available over the bank
holiday weekend to deal with urgent medical help.

Follow these three simple steps to make sure you have the right medicines
                                      over Easter:

                                          1. Check your medicines cabinet – do you have enough prescription
                                             and over the counter medicine to cover you for the Easter holiday;
                                          2. Order any repeat prescriptions from your GP surgery if you are running
                                             low or expect to run out completely;
                                          3. Talk to your pharmacist – they can advise on medications and
repeat prescriptions if you are unsure or require any more information.

The NHS has identified stroke care and treatment as a priority. In 2019/20,
2638 people in Sussex were admitted to hospital with a stroke.

Local people and organisations are working together to make sure stroke
services give the best possible care and treatment for people following a
stroke. In Sussex we will achieve this through our Integrated Stroke Delivery
Network (ISDN). The Sussex ISDN will focus on delivering the commitments for
stroke as outlined in the NHS Long Term Plan.

As well as developing ways to communicate news and gather feedback from
the wider stroke survivor and carer population in Sussex we are also looking for
a person with lived experience of stroke.

This is a key role and the person will be a member of both the ISDN Board and
the ISDN steering groups. We will be advertising this opportunity in the next
newsletter but if you would like to express an interest now please get in

                                      Non emergency transport

The local NHS is reassuring those who rely on Non-Emergency Patient
Transport Service (NEPTS) that all their needs will still be met through a high
quality, patient-centred and responsive service, after the tender process for a
new provider was paused. The Non-Emergency Patient Transport Service
provides transport for eligible patients to and from their home.

Sussex NHS Commissioners had planned to go out to tender for NEPTS this
year, however, the continuing COVID-19 pandemic has impacted upon this
                                      planned timetable.

An extension to the existing service is being sought with the current provider,
South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS), whose contract was due to expire
on 31 March 2022. Subject to agreement, SCAS will continue to provide the
service for an additional 6 months, with the possibility of extending for a further
                                      6 months until 31 March 2023.

The priority for Sussex commissioners is to have a safe, effective service in
place for those who need it.
