HERE COMES THE SUN. Summer is on its way, and I can feel the Detroit energy in the air. Families riding their bikes, children playing in the park, and Detroiters returning to their roots to enjoy the warmer weather. Live6 Alliance has stayed true to our mission of improving the quality of life and economic opportunity in Northwest Detroit. We launched the One Degree platform in March to assist low-income families in gaining access to the resources they require to improve their lives and achieve social and economic movements. Through our thriving partnerships with Downtown Detroit Partnership (DDP), Invest Detroit, and the upcoming Market2Mainstreet program, Live6 supports small businesses and enterprises, real estate ventures, and clean and safe initiatives. On June 9th, we will hold our 2nd Virtual Community Meeting , where we will discuss some exciting topics and share the most recent news from the Livernois/McNichols corridor. The meeting will be followed by a 30-minute question-and-answer session. Live6 will share news and information on a regular basis through our quarterly newsletters and various social media channels. Let us work together to improve the quality of life and economic prospects in Northwest Detroit. Many thanks to all of our generous supporters for their belief in our cause and goals. We hope to see each other again at HomeBase soon. Until then, keep yourself healthy, connected, and informed. Dr. Geneva J. Williams Executive Director, Live6 Alliance
IN THE WORKS! In response to the pandemic, Live6 Alliance created “ Livernois Outdoors ,” an initiative that provided 75 sets of outdoor patio furniture to seven eateries on the commercial street known as the “Avenue of Fashion.” The intention: drive customers to struggling eateries on the commercial corridor that had recently undergone significant streetscaping. The initiative encourages public life to flourish, while safely using the brand new 25 foot wide sidewalks installed as part of the streetscape project. For 2021, Live6 received funding to give out another round of patio furniture to small businesses. Is it time for your business to explore something new and truly understand what resonates with your target market? Welcome to our concept, Market2Mainstreet . It's an opportunity for you to take your business into a temporary space (based on your industry) that will allow you to increase sales, customer engagement, and brand awareness using a cost-effective solution to build an authentic experience for your customer base. AROUND TOWN. Live6 is home to a wide variety of amazing small businesses. From art to food to fashion, Live6 is the place to shop locally. Our team successfully launched the Live6 Alliance Small Business Directory document to increase visibility for small businesses. Our team took additional steps to explore the Covid-19-related challenges facing small businesses in the Livernois/McNichols area, with an emphasis on Black-owned businesses. We take a data-focused look at solutions, national trends, and ongoing ways to help. Tour the findings. #StreetScapeScoop: Construction on McNichols between Livernois and San Juan are moving forward. FROM CONCEPT TO CREATION. If you are in the neighborhood this month, you may notice that the building located at 7434 W.McNichols is starting to come back to life. The development team plans to begin cleaning out the building and starting interior demolition. For now, check out how they envision building out the interior space later this year. Developers for the project attended a series of community meetings during the month of May to share updates about the project. The team discussed the new direction of the project and the timeline for the next couple of months. Stay connected for additional updates! A Black-owned brewery will set up shop in the West McNichols commercial corridor in Detroit’s Bagley/Fitzgerald neighborhood, where a large-scale effort is underway to revive housing, public space, and businesses. The brewery will be the anchor tenant of an 8,000 square foot building at 7400 W. McNichols, a property that’s undergone extensive renovation after being empty for decades.
WHAT'S NEXT? The best way to get involved is to join! On June 9th, we will hold our 2nd Virtual Community Meeting , where we will discuss some exciting topics and share the most recent news from the Livernois/McNichols corridor. The meeting will be followed by a 30-minute question- and-answer session. The Juneteenth Jubilee Stroll is a unique shopping experience supporting Detroit Black Businesses along the Livernois Avenue of Fashion. Each participating business will provide a discount or tangible benefit for registered shoppers. The stroll will also include a live podcast, health and wellness resources, raffles, and more! Check-in will take place at the Best Artist Management to pick up your map of participating businesses, swag bags, and event materials. Proceeds and support from this event will benefit the Juneteenth Jubilee Detroit educational initiatives and Black- owned partner organizations.
STAY CONNECTED! At the center of Live6 Alliance’s place-based investment strategy is Detroit’s Livernois and McNichols (6 Mile) commercial corridors. These corridors have long served as a vital backbone for the City, hosting a mix of shopping, employers, housing, and institutional activities, while connecting people and neighborhoods. The area is defined by some of Detroit’s greatest assets — the Detroit Golf Club and Palmer Park offer world-class open spaces, the historic Avenue of Fashion hosts businesses built on long-legacy arts and culture, and strong and stable neighborhoods offer a diverse mix of housing that Detroit families have called home for decades.
