Welcome from the Dean OSHER Dear OLLI Community, I am very pleased to be entering the OLLI family—in more ways than one. LIFELONG First, I started as Dean of the College of Education and Health Professions this past LEARNING July—and I was delighted to learn of OLLI’s long and fruitful relationship with the College. Second, one of my first official acts as Dean was to become, personally, an INSTITUTE OLLI member! Given the challenges of getting to know a College with 5300 students, 180 faculty, and 300 staff, I haven’t been able to take a course yet. But I am certain that milestone will occur soon. I’m pleased to report that I’ve had a great relationship with OLLI over the years. For example, I taught OLLI students when I was a professor at the University of Pittsburgh. “Live Well. Also, my parents are currently taking no fewer than *four* OLLI courses each semester. Those courses have involved everything from James Joyce to Italian to the U. S. Learn Forever.” Transportation System to modern physics. Therefore, I’ve had many chances to see first-hand how OLLI changes lives. Brian A. Primack, MD, PhD Among other things, taking a class introduces you to new ideas, improves your social OLLI UA STAFF Dean, College of Education connections, and bolsters your sense of community engagement. Josh Raney and Health Professions And please also don’t forget to take advantage of all the *other* things that come along Director Professor of Public Health with your OLLI membership—like performances, movies, and other special events. Sandra Sawyer and Medicine Most of all, *thank you* for being a valued member of OLLI. I look forward to seeing Assistant Director you at an event one of these days! All About OLLI Welcome to the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Arkansas! OLLI at the University of Arkansas was established in 2007. It is one of 123 Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes across the United States, and is the only OLLI in the state of Arkansas. These lifelong learning programs are partially funded through the Bernard Osher Foundation and each is dedicated to providing non- credit courses and continuing education opportunities to adults. OLLI has NO academic prerequisites or age restrictions and is designed for adults who want to continue learning in their retirement years. Our Mission and Values The mission of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Arkansas (U of A) is to provide a community of adults with a lifelong learning venue that promotes intellectual and cultural growth through exploration and discussion via diverse, high quality and affordable educational programs. High Quality Programs and Engaging Courses The OLLI curriculum committee annually develops hundreds of stimulating courses in a variety of fascinating topic areas. Programs range from one time lectures, tours, workshops and day hikes to eight-week seminars or study groups. Courses are engaging, innovative, lively, hands on, informative and are offered in a variety of settings. There are no prerequisites required, no tests or exams and no age restrictions. OLLI courses provide the ideal environment for learning. Exceptional Instructors Along with university professors and other educators, those who facilitate OLLI courses include experienced professionals, passionate hobbyists, researchers and distinguished scholars. OLLI instructors are there both to educate and to engage, and they love sharing their knowledge, expertise and fascinating stories. Special Events and Programs In addition to regular courses, OLLI members enjoy the opportunity to engage in monthly social and cultural events, special programs, book clubs, special interest groups, and much more. These special programs provide an opportunity to take the discussion outside the classroom, to meet new people, and to engage in unique experiences only offered through our institute. Be a vOLLIunteer! Global Campus Osher Institutes are volunteer driven organizations! Our volunteers and committees are vital to the success, quality and sustainability of the institute’s programs. Your time, talents, and resources are valuable and provide needed support. Volunteers are recgonized at the College of Education and Health Professions Honors Convocation and throughout the year in the OLLI newsletter. Volunteers are needed for the following: OLLI Course Ambassadors OLLI classes are held at various venues across the region making it difficult for our small staff to be at each location. Volunteering as a Course Ambassador is a great way to help our staff provide a quality experience for students and instructors. Course Ambassadors assist with signing in participants, introducing the instructors, and making program announcements. No skills or training is needed. All information needed to be a successful course ambassador will be provided to you and available at each classroom location. If you register and attend an OLLI program course consider being a course ambassador! OLLI Committee Member OLLI committees are the driving force behind our institute’s high quality courses, diverse membership and fun, unique special programs. Currently the institute has four standing committees that need more volunteers: CURRICULUM- This committee takes all the credit for shaping and developing the annual list of courses. Members of this committee meet monthly to discuss ideas for course topics and recruit instructors for facilitating the programs. If you have an idea for an OLLI course, contact this group! MEMBERSHIP- This committee has the opportunity to build a diverse and fun community of learners. Members of this committee meet monthly to develop and discuss ideas for outreach opportunities. They also assist in implementing marketing strategies to promote OLLI program and membership benefits. SOCIAL- Our social committee is a group that enjoys having fun and meeting new people. They meet monthly to come up with new and fun ways for OLLI members and students to connect outside of courses. Whether it’s dancing, drinks or games, this is the group that makes it happen. ADVISORY COUNCIL- The Advisory Council represents the membership of OLLI and assures coordination and strategic direction for OLLI. Working closely with the OLLI director and staff, the council establishes long-range plans and goals for the institute and ensures that programs are created to accomplish them. This group advises on online.uark.edu policies, procedures, and guidelines for the program with the oversight of the OLLI director and the Dean of the College of Education and Health Professions. OLLI Van Drivers OLLI is expanding its out and about program with more day trips, training.uark.edu tours and hikes this spring. We will be taking participants to local and regional venues and need volunteers to drive passenger vans on these exciting and fun adventures. Driving a van is a great way to experience OLLI activities and to participate in these programs at a discount! If you have interest in being a part of an OLLI committee contact us today! To volunteer or for more details, contact the OLLI office at (479)575-4545 or email us at olli@uark.edu.
