Office of Community Education 1200 West Algonquin Road Palatine, Illinois 60067 847.925.6300 Fall 2021 Harper College Community, I’m sometimes asked about the value of a college having a non-credit program. Experts say learning should be a lifelong endeavor, and that any type of learning you engage in will have far-reaching, positive influences on your life. The extensive Community Education program we have developed at Harper College provides numerous opportunities to support you in your journey. Dr. Robert Lucas, of the University of Chicago, conducted a study that demonstrated the value of people interacting in a class. He concluded that when people interact, they learn from each other, and that we become more productive and creative when we can interact with better-educated peers (Lucas, 1988). Noted brain surgeon Dr. Sanjay Gupta recently wrote a book on maintaining brain health and staving off dementia. His preventative measures are recommended for people who are 20 to 30 years away from ever being diagnosed with dementia. One of Dr. Gupta’s key points is, “doing new things is literally exercise for the brain,” and recommends activities such as taking a continuing education class and learning art, cooking, languages, writing or other new interests. Our Community Education program can help you with all of that! In fact, Community Education is all about keeping our community engaged and thriving. Our Community Music and Arts Center has long been committed to bringing live music and arts back into your living rooms and yards. Harper’s Back Porch Revue and World Music Ensemble are examples of lively performance groups made up of community members of all ages. You can learn Spanish, French, Italian, German and Japanese in our program. You can learn to paint or make pottery in our excellent facilities. You can write your next novel or non-fiction book with us. You can learn skills that will improve your on-the-job performance by improving your computer, management, or workplace communication skills. Harper CE provides opportunities for achieving your personal and professional goals. I encourage you to browse through our catalog and visit ce.harpercollege.edu for the most current information and take advantage of all Harper’s Community Education program has to offer. Harper CE Online Options Online classes can hold some advantages over in-person classes and many of you have responded positively to our online offerings. We know that even as the pandemic recedes and we are able to resume more in-per- son classes, there will continue to be demand for online classes. Identifying the Types of Classes In This Catalog • Live Online Classes : These are classes where an online meeting is being used like an in-person classroom. Days and times for the meetings are specified, with online lectures being used as the primary way in which course content is being presented. These classes will either utilize Webex or Blackboard (with Blackboard Collaborate Ultra for class meetings). Information on your virtual classroom will come directly from your instructor via email. • Self-Paced Online Classes : In these classes, content (lectures, readings, videos, etc.) is placed on a protected website (Blackboard, in most instances) Some self-paced classes may have occasional class meetings, though meetings are not the primary way in which content is being presented to you. Self-paced classes will have active instructor participation and deadlines even without live meetings. You will receive instructions for accessing the class materials prior to the start of classes via email. • In-Person Classes : These classes meet in-person at the designated campus or offsite location. The room number and most up-to-date information is available on the course page at ce.harpercollege.edu. For information on prevention and resources related to COVID-19, please visit the Harper College Advisory site at https://www.harpercollege.edu/advisory. How do I know which is which? Our online classes are labeled as “Live Online” and “Self-Paced Online”, so that you know how each class will be conducted. In-Person classes are indicated by a campus (or offsite) location. When you register for a class, your instructor will send an email to you 1 -2 days before the start of the class with information about how the class will be taught and, if applicable, login information. We hope that the information we are providing to you in our catalog and online will help you to make your enrollment decisions. We know our print catalog is convenient but as always, the most complete and current information is online at ce.harpercollege.edu.
