After the procedure is completed, the abdomen is deflated and the incisions are closed usually with one stitch. Exotics Do you own an exotic pet? We treat small mammals, amphibians, fish, reptiles and birds Amity Veterinary Care is proud to be able to provide exotic veterinary service in Newton Abbot. I have been interested in exotics since I was young and now get to work with them in a professional capacity! Where other vets may not wish to work with these amazing creatures, I have embraced them and their diversity. As a result, there are not many small/exotic/furry/scaly/feathered creatures great and small that I have not worked with. Ranging from the more ordinary guinea pigs, rabbits, ferrets, hamsters, mice and rats; to the more unusual parrots and chickens; and on to the far more unusual snakes, lizards, tortoises and salamanders. They are all family! In addition, I spent 18 months as a volunteer veterinary surgeon at Paignton Zoo. An incredible experience which meant I could indulge my passion to the extreme: sedating bongos, medicating 10ft long pythons, anaesthetising 300kg gorillas – all in a day’s work! Now I can bring this expertise to you and your pets. Amity Vets can provide medical and surgical treatment, health checks, dietary advice, husbandry advice, medical diagnostics (including x-ray and ultrasound), blood and urine tests. We can advise on neutering and seasonal checks for rabbits and guinea pigs. Also, we provide pre- and post-hibernation checks for tortoises. Dr Lennon Foo BVetMed GPCert(SAM) MRCVS All members of staff are very friendly and make you feel welcome... 9

Cat Lovers WE LOVE CATS! Amity embraces the humanity of cat ownership, creating a peaceful environment where owners are reassured and comforted thereby making your cats feel more secure and less fretful and reflects Lennon’s interest in feline medicine. We have a cat only consult room (no dogs allowed!) that is cheerfully decorated in natural shades, incorporating a unique climbing frame plus various toys and nooks and crannies for your fluffy babies to sniff, roam and play. Cat owners love it and some have even referred to it as a ‘cat fun room’ and a ‘play room’. In addition, there is a separate cat only ward should your pet needs to be kept overnight. We understand that an unwell cat receiving fluids on a drip would not benefit from a barking dog in his or her face! A large glass window is also incorporated for us to look in at them and for them to look out at us for entertainment! 13
The Personal Care Nurse System In most veterinary practices, you are served by the vet, vet nurses and front- desk people. The nurses do not get a lot of chance to bond with you; their role is somewhat subsidiary. The front-desk people also do not usually do a lot of close bonding because their conversations are often in public. It can be inappropriate for you to talk about your finances, medical history, etc in front of other customers, and so the conversations become limited. The vet is usually too busy caring for your pet to have time left over for communication. To overcome this problem, we have a unique Personal Care Nurse system. In the system, your Personal Care Nurse becomes your primary carer and confidante. His/Her communications with you are carried out in private. He/She will act as your mentor and your devil’s advocate with the vet. They have portable computer terminals so that they can do all the transactions for you in the consultation rooms including discussing any medication required, take payments and also book any follow up appointments. They are multi-skilled in office and clinical tasks so they do not have to pass their customers on to a third party for any part of the service. They are completely in charge of your experience and all interactions with the practice. They are your go-to person so you will always have a familiar face to tend to your needs. There is no other vet practice in the country that works like this. Come and feel the difference! 14

We would also recommend that you take out an Accidents Only cover. Please speak to our team if you need any further assistance. Please allow us to work in a way where the veterinary care we provide for your pet is not dependant on finances. Everyone tends to be happier too (pet included)! Hours we Work Mondays - Fridays from 8.30 am until 6 p.m. We are closed on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays (Emergencies only) All consultations (apart from emergencies) are by appointment only Training days There may be up to 4 days a year where the practice is closed for training and only emergencies are seen. We do apologise for the inconvenience caused but we promise that we will be better trained when we return! Preventive Veterinary Care Prevention is better than cure, I think you will agree. At Amity, we believe in preventative health in pets. That means regular worming (or performing worm egg count) and flea/tick prevention. We would also advise regular vaccinations or titre testing to ensure your pet still possess enough protection against the relevant diseases. 17

How to Join To join the Amity family, a Complete Amity Consultation will be booked for you and your pet. This allows us to assess both your pet’s and your needs. Furthermore, this allows all parties (you, your pet and us) to determine if we are a good fit for each other which are paramount on building a long lasting relationship. Just like you choosing your vet, we select our customers very carefully because we know from experience that not everyone wants what we have to offer. Some people like the HI, FIX MY PET AND BYE style of Veterinary Medicine, where there is little friendliness or discussion. We would like to become friends with you so that we both can enjoy our times together more. I know it sounds weird that we think people may enjoy coming to see us in a veterinary practice, but many people do. We all spend a lot of our lives at Amity. We find it far more pleasurable to spend the time with people that we have become friendly with, and trust. This usually takes at least 30 minutes and presently costs at a discounted rate of £75. This also includes addressing any minor ailments.
