WITH OISE I CAN LEAD. CHANGE. IMPACT. GRADUATE STUDIES IN EDUCATION TEACHER EDUCATION CORINNA LIN MA-CSE 2020 / APHD
I was hungry for language to describe settler-colonialism and how it relates to my queer, two-spirit and trans Indigenous community. I was also eager to see how leading scholars were applying anti-racist education in a variety of contexts to create positive change. OISE’s Department of Social Justice Education was one of few places I found where I could engage in all of these intellectual projects at once. MARIE LAING MA 2018 / SJE Youth Leader at the Native Youth Sexual Health Network Highlighting Indigenous resistance is an important part of combating racism, Laing explained. “By focusing on the leadership demonstrated by Indigenous communities in our various acts of resistance to ongoing settler-colonialism, we can ourselves resist the racist narratives about our communities which are offered by dominant society – while at the same time learning new strategies for collective resistance.” Read more of Marie’s story at: uoft.me/OISE-ML 2

OISE’s Black Studies cohort has been a tremendous blessing to me just for the simple fact that I am surrounded by people who are brilliant, creative, communal, encouraging, and want to push the envelope of academia to a place where community is not excluded. MARCUS SINGLETON MEd 2019 / SJE Graduation Coach for Black Students Toronto District School Board (TDSB) Singleton prefers a classroom where there’s no hierarchy structure, “where the classroom can be transformed into a community of learners where we – the teacher and students – can learn together.” Read more of Marcus’s story at: uoft.me/OISE-MS 12
