Tropical Storm Fred
Tropical Weather Awareness
Tropical Weather Awareness What's New? The National Hurricane Center upgraded Potential Tropical Cyclone Six (PTC 6) to Tropical Storm Fred last night at 10 PM CDT. Increased risk of rip currents early next week due to increasing wave periods as the system moves over the eastern Gulf of Mexico. The NHC is also monitoring a disturbance in the eastern Atlantic for potential development over the next several days. There is a MEDIUM (40%) chance of formation over the next 5 days. Summary of Information: The National Hurricane Center upgraded PTC 6 to Tropical Storm Fred last night. Tropical Storm Fred is moving west-northwestward near 16 mph and is expected to decrease in forward speed over the next few days. Fred is expected to be near or over Hispaniola this afternoon and evening, move near the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas on Thursday, and move near or north of the northern coast of central Cuba on Friday.
Tropical Weather Awareness Regarding the eastern Atlantic disturbance: A tropical wave located several hundred miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands continues to produce disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Some gradual development of this system is possible, and a tropical depression could form by early next week while moving generally westward across the tropical Atlantic near 20 mph. This system could reach portions of the Leeward Islands by late Saturday. South Texas Impacts: At this time, there are no imminent threats to South Texas. However, we will begin to experience impacts along the Middle Texas coast early next week as the system moves into the eastern Gulf of Mexico and increases wave periods. An increased risk of rip currents and hazardous seas are possible. Tide levels do not appear to be an issue at this time. Regarding the eastern Atlantic disturbance: It is too soon to determine if any impacts could occur to Texas.

Lavaca County Fire Danger Lavaca County Fire Danger Level: LOW (GREEN) When the fire danger is low it means that fuels do not ignite easily from small embers, but a more intense heat source, such as lightning, may start fires in duff or dry, rotten wood.
Lavaca County Fire Weather Mostly dry weather can be expected today through Friday, with the exception of isolated afternoon into early evening showers and thunderstorms across eastern areas. Breezy south to southeast winds will continue during the afternoons and evenings today through Thursday. Some localized areas of elevated fire weather conditions are possible today and Thursday across Val Verde County, where wind gusts around 25 to 30 mph, minimum RH values around 30%, and slightly drier fuels coincide. The rest of the region should generally see low fire weather concerns given recent rainfall maintaining near to above normal fuel moisture. Slightly better rain chances develop with spotty wetting rains possible for most areas this weekend and into next week. Lavaca County Cone Zone • YOAKUM – Texas Department of Transportation will start a road rehabilitation project on Monday, August 2, 2021 and resurfacing project on August 7, 2021. On Monday, August 2nd the contractor will begin the road rehabilitation project on SH 111 from US 77A to US 77. The existing pavement surface will be removed and replaced with new asphalt material. Work will be done in 2 block sections at a time to lower traffic interference. Work will be performed during daylight hours with alternating one-way traffic closures. PARKING ALONG THIS ROUTE WILL NOT BE ALLOWED DUE TO THE OPERATIONS. Work is scheduled to be completed by August 31st - weather permitting. • On Saturday, August 7th the contractor will begin the resurfacing project on US 77A from SH 111 to SH 95. We will be removing and replacing the surface layer. This operation will require alternating lane closures and one-way traffic control setups. Work will be performed during daylight hours only. Work is scheduled to be completed by August 31st - weather permitting. • Hunter Industries Ltd, of San Marcos, Texas, was awarded the contract as part of a larger project that was awarded for $2.7 million dollars. • We are asking drivers to watch for flaggers, slowed traffic, and construction equipment and employees entering and exiting the work zone. Motorists should expect possible traffic delays, are urged to use caution when driving through the work zone, and should keep the following tips in mind: • • Slow down and always follow posted work zone speed limits. Speeding is one of the major causes of work zone crashes. Remember, traffic fines double in work zones. • • Pay attention. Workers and heavy equipment may only be a few feet from passing vehicles. • • Be patient. Delays from roadway construction can be frustrating, but it only takes a few extra minutes to slow down for a work zone.
