About LAM and LAM Action We need funds to combat LAM through a combination of research and support to those with the disease and their families. This note gives more information on how the sponsorship monies raised by you will help WHAT IS LAM (lymphangioleiomyomatosis)? LAM is a rare disease that occurs almost exclusively Airways blocked Lung Collapsed in women – around 7 women in every million – and is Healthy lung tissue Airways cysts by cysts lung Pleural covering usually diagnosed during childbearing years. LAM predominantly affects the lungs, where it causes excessive growth of smooth muscle cells which progressively destroy lung tissue and erode lung function. LAM is a progressive disease, but the rate Pneumothorax: Air leaks from lungs into surrounding pleural space at which it progresses varies considerably. Although research is ongoing, currently there is no cure for LAM Normal Lungs Lungs With LAM and little effective treatment. For some women lung transplantation is their only means of survival. As it is so rare, women who are newly diagnosed are unlikely to know anything about LAM or have met anyone else with the disease. WHAT HAPPENS TO WOMEN WITH LAM? Most women with LAM experience breathlessness, particularly on exertion, which eventually impacts their ability to perform normal, day-to-day tasks. Over time, many women require supplemental oxygen. Other symptoms of LAM may include a collapsed lung, chest pain, cough or fatigue. Women often go undiagnosed for years, and are frequently misdiagnosed with asthma, bronchitis or emphysema. Many women with LAM also have benign kidney tumours called angiomyolipomas. Since LAM occurs almost exclusively in women and generally occurs before the menopause it is thought to be influenced by female hormones such as oestrogen which may accelerate the disease. WHAT TREATMENT IS AVAILABLE? There has been significant progress in understanding LAM in recent years, but there is still no cure for LAM. However there is now evidence to show that one drug (sirolimus or rapamycin) can slow the rate of decline in lung function and reduce the size of the kidney tumours. Rapamycin commonly causes side effects, needs careful monitoring and is not appropriate for all women. At present rapamycin is mainly prescribed for women with more severe LAM and those with milky (chylous) fluid around the lung. LAM ACTION As the UK registered charity focussed on LAM, LAM Action plays a crucial role in helping to ease the sense of isolation experienced by women with LAM. We also ensure that accurate information about LAM is readily available; provide ongoing support to women with LAM and their families; foster strong links with the medical profession and other LAM organisations around the world; and raise funds for research. SOME KEY ACHIEVEMENTS LAM Action - • hosts a private email support group known as LAMLine • provides fact sheets for women diagnosed with LAM and doctors looking after them • produces a regular newsletter – LAMpost • maintains a website – www.lamaction.org • holds an annual meeting for its members • facilitates regional support groups of women with LAM • helps fund scientific research conducted at Nottingham University • maintains strong links with other LAM groups around the world • enjoys the support of our patron, the actress Juliet Stevenson LAM Action Fundraising Pack 2019 3 LAM ACTION Supporting women with Lymphangioleiomyomatosis
Medically - • LAM Action has always been supported by the respiratory group at Nottingham University • European Respiratory Society guidelines for clinical care of women with LAM were created several years ago • In 2011, the National Centre for LAM was established in Nottingham to provide clinical care for women with LAM and coordinate scientific research into the disease. Although independent from LAM Action, those with LAM are clear beneficiaries of the centre and feedback from those who attend the centre has been very positive. As a result of trials in the UK and USA of the drug rapamycin for the lung and renal manifestations of LAM, rapamycin was approved as a treatment for those with moderate to severe LAM in 2011. FINANCE In a typical year LAM Action’s revenue approximates £58-75,000. Most of our revenue comes from donations and fundraising initiatives from women with LAM and their supporters through large events such as the London Marathon and Ride London, and through many smaller, individual fundraising events. WHY DO WE NEED TO RAISE MONEY? There are three good reasons: 1. to pursue basic research to find the cause of LAM The current focus of research funded by LAM Action is on understanding how LAM cells interact with other cells, and the mechanisms by which their interactions lead to lung destruction. 2. to carry out research to see which treatment is best, and follow through with treatment trials A few years ago, in Nottingham, LAM Action jointly funded (with the British Lung Foundation) only the second randomised clinical trial of a possible treatment. Progress in our understanding of the science behind LAM means there are many ideas for further drug treatment trials and biomarker studies. However, these trials and studies need funding and need those with LAM to participate; both present challenges in a rare disease such as LAM. 3. to provide continued and better support for women with LAM HOW WILL THE MONEY BE SPENT? • LAM Action continue to fund one part time researcher at Nottingham and have previously part-funded a PhD student, as well as part-funded an important trial and contributing to the cost of laboratory consumables. The charity has also recently approved bridging funding for a post-doctorate researcher who will be between grants later in 2018. • Whilst the majority of our revenue goes toward research, we do have some overhead costs, such as the salary of a part-time coordinator, professional fees and costs associated with our annual meeting. We greatly appreciate all efforts to support LAM Action and research into this rare and distressing disease. Cheques, payable to LAM Action, should be sent to: LAM Action Nottingham Voluntary Action Centre 7 Mansfield Road Nottingham NG1 3FB Donations also can be made online via the Virgin Money Giving website: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/charity-web/charity/finalCharityHomepage.action?charityId=1005960 or the JustGiving website: www.justgiving.com/lamaction/donate LAM Action Fundraising Pack 2019 4 LAM ACTION Supporting women with Lymphangioleiomyomatosis
LAM - a Personal Story I’m delighted to hear that you will be raising funds for LAM Action – thank you very much indeed! I thought you might find it interesting to hear my own experience with LAM, to give you a better idea of what and whom you’re doing it for. I was diagnosed with LAM in 1991, when I was 27. In the early years, it did not affect me and I remained very fit and active, but as time went on my condition worsened and I became increasingly breathless. This had a huge impact on the lives of me and my husband. One by one, we had to give up our favourite activities – travelling, tennis, golf, going out for dinner. By autumn 2003, I was on oxygen 24 hours a day and everything was an effort – talking, eating, dressing, sleeping. Even simple things like walking from the front door to the car or making a cup of tea were extremely difficult because of my lack of breath. I’m naturally an energetic and sociable person, but was unable to be either. Not only was it frustrating to be so restricted, I was deteriorating so rapidly that it was very frightening. However, in February 2004, I had a single lung transplant. Thanks to the donor, their family and the wonderful team at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, my life since then has been absolutely transformed. The months immediately after the operation were quite tough, but I was amazed how immediately I felt the benefit. Leaving hospital was very emotional – I felt like a new woman! It really was a miracle; three weeks after the operation, I was able to walk outside for an hour. Since then, I’ve slowly got fitter and stronger, and now I can literally walk for miles. I’ve been working hard at my fitness and stamina, and am now able to walk quite long distances. In August 2004, I was able to go on my first proper holiday for years with my family. I have two young nephews, and it was wonderful to be able to keep up with them for the first time - I was even able to go canoeing with the older one! Then in the autumn, seven months after my transplant, I returned to work part-time. More recently, I’ve been golfing and skiing again and I’ve even been learning to rollerblade. Everyone around me is amazed and delighted with my transformation – it’s incredible! However, I’m acutely aware that I’ve been very lucky. LAM is a horrible disease, and the efforts of LAM Action in supporting affected patients and doing research into the disease are very worthwhile. I’m thus hugely appreciative of your support for the charity. Fundraising Obviously, in addition to enjoying the experience of participating in your chosen event, we hope that you’ll be able to raise as much sponsorship money for LAM Action as possible! You will see better results if you plan your fundraising efforts and start sooner rather than later. To help you do this, we’ve put together some guidelines and tips. PRACTICAL ISSUES There are two main ways of collecting sponsorship money – either via online donations (credit and debit cards) or sponsorship forms (cash or cheques). 1. ONLINE DONATIONS The advantages of online giving & your own fund-raising webpage Online giving is hugely popular, and it is now very simple to set up your own dedicated fund-raising webpage (details below). This method of fundraising has many advantages for the donor, the charity and you– • It helps you reach a far wider audience – it is simple to email people the link to your webpage. • Administration is much easier for both you and us – the donations are collected automatically and, assuming the donor ticks the relevant box and is a tax payer, Gift Aid is also automatically added back to the sums raised. • People seem to be more willing to donate larger sums via their credit card than they would pledge on a sponsorship form! How to set up your own fund-raising webpage LAM Action has accounts with Virgin Money Giving and JustGiving, and it is simple to set up your own fund- raising webpage. We receive slightly more from donations made via Virgin Money Giving than JustGiving, but we are happy for you to use whichever site you prefer. Virgin Money Giving have simple click through instructions to set up your page. Go to http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/giving/ and click on ‘Start Fundraising’ and you’ll be up and running in no time. If you access the JustGiving website through the LAM Action link, it will populate the form with the LAM Action charity details. • Go to www.justgiving.com/lamaction • This takes you to the general LAM Action page on JustGiving, and gives you two options in the top right corner – “donate” or “fundraise for us”. Click on the orange “fundraise for us” button and follow the instructions to set up your page 2. SPONSORSHIP FORMS Alternatively, you can get sponsorship through the traditional “sponsorship form”. Enclosed at the back of this pack is a sponsorship form. This can be photocopied, but we can send you additional copies on request. If possible, it would be preferable if all the sponsorship donations made by cash or cheque could be paid directly to you in the first instance. You would then write a single cheque or set up a bank transfer to LAM Action after the event. The reason for this preference is that, from an administrative point of view, it is much easier for LAM Action to cash and account for a single cheque, than deal with lots of small cheques. LAM Action’s bank details are: Payee: LAM Action / Bank Name: CAF Bank / Sort code: 40-52-40 / Account number: 00030584 REMEMBER GIFT AID! Gift Aid is extremely valuable to us. Gift Aid is a simple scheme that enables charities to reclaim the basic rate of tax on donations received from UK taxpayers – currently 25p for each £1 given. Thus, if we can reclaim this money, it can augment the total amount you raise quite substantially! However, in order for us to do this, you must ensure that your sponsors do the following – LAM Action Fundraising Pack 2019 6 LAM ACTION Supporting women with Lymphangioleiomyomatosis
• If donating online through your webpage, tick the relevant Gift Aid box • If donating through the sponsorship form, with cash or cheques then sponsors need to give their full name and address, including postcode, the date of their donation (the date is needed so the Inland Revenue know which tax year applies), and tick the Gift Aid column on the sponsorship form. If any of this information is missing on sponsorship forms then we can’t claim the tax back! You then need to send us the sponsorship forms and the cheques for the total of the sponsorship you have raised offline. Online sponsorship via Virgin Money Giving and JustGiving is the simplest way for supporters to sponsor you and the tax reclaim is then done automatically but if you are using a sponsorship form LAM Action can only claim the tax back on taxpayers’ sponsorship if we have their NAME and full HOME address, the DATE when the donation was made and the Gift Aid box is ticked. Please note that sponsors who tick the Gift Aid column must pay an amount of income tax and/or capital gains tax at least equal to the tax that the charity reclaims on the donation in any one tax year. Thus, donations from non-wage-earners and others on low income may not be eligible for Gift Aid. However, if your sponsors are tax-payers, then do encourage them to tick the Gift Aid column on the sponsorship form or the box when donating online! Lastly, if any of your sponsors pay tax at the higher rate, they can claim the difference between the higher rate of tax 40% and/or 45% and the basic rate of tax 20% on the total ‘gross’ value of their donation to LAM Action. For example, on sponsorship of £100 LAM Action can reclaim an extra £25 for the charity and your sponsor can reclaim £25 (if he/she pays tax at 40%) or £31.25 (if your sponsor pays tax at 45%). As a result, a £100 sponsorship worth £125 to LAM Action only actually need cost your higher tax rate sponsor £75 or £68.75. LAM Action also participates in the new Inland Revenue scheme ‘Giving through the Self-Assessment Return’ which enables sponsors who are higher tax payers to choose to nominate LAM Action to receive their tax repayments as a donation. The code for LAM Action is HAT79QG and further details can be found at www.hmrc.gov.uk/index.htm. TIPS FOR MAXIMISING FUNDS RAISED • Learn as much as possible about LAM Action. The pages in the section above should give you sufficient background information, but additional information is on the LAM Action website (www.lamaction.org) • Set up your own fund-raising webpage. “How to” details are above. • Use every outlet possible to publicise your plans. For example, consider – - Sending an email to all the contacts in your address book both to friends and to work colleagues and contacts, with a link to your Virgin Money Giving or JustGiving webpage. - Using noticeboards at work, your gym and other places to post details of your plans, together with copies of the sponsorship form and/or links to your Virgin Money Giving or JustGiving webpage. - Putting a note in your Christmas cards, again with a link to your Virgin Money Giving or JustGiving webpage. - Getting press coverage to increase publicity about your plans. LAM Action works with a public relations agency who can help you in this; details follow below. Please return all sponsorship monies, sponsorship forms and Gift Aid forms to LAM Action (see Contact Details) PRESS COVERAGE LAM Action works with a public relations consultancy, Empica Ltd., who are helping to raise awareness of both LAM and the work of LAM Action. Press coverage – particularly in local papers – can help you gain exposure, and thus directly or indirectly increase your sponsorship funds. Whilst they cannot help directly with fund- raising, the team at Empica can help advise you how to get the press interested in your story, and give contact details for your local press. LAM Action’s main contact at Empica is – Judith Skorupski Tel: 020 8983 0775 Email: judith@empica.com By way of example, a number of people have run the London Marathon for LAM Action over the years, and many of the most successful runners – at least in terms of fund-raising – got a considerable amount of press coverage with the help of Empica. Such press coverage was a major contributor to their fund-raising (and also helped raise awareness of LAM at the same time). Thus, we encourage everyone participating in events to consider how PR might help in your fund-raising efforts, and to contact Judith! Case Study Follow the example of Darren Whitney. Darren’s friend Sarah Wood was diagnosed with LAM in 2010 and after he heard the news Darren decided to run in the 2011 London Marathon, raising over £4,000! His strategy was as follows – • He set up a page on JustGiving. “The JustGiving site was fantastic; really easy to set up and so much easier than collecting money.” • Darren and his partner Laura emailed everyone they knew, as did Sarah and her husband John, emailing all their work colleagues, friends and family, with a link to the JustGiving site. • They gave sponsorship forms to parents and other friends – to cover people who didn’t have email. • They designed a poster which they displayed at all their workplaces, and asked friends to do the same. • Their local paper, the Watford Observer, did a front page article on them around the time of the marathon. A copy of the press cutting on Darren and Sarah is attached below. Looking at the article about Darren Whitney there are several points which you should bear in mind when seeking press coverage for your own efforts: 1. This is just one article but obviously the more mentions you can get in local press, radio etc ….the better. Similarly, the earlier you start your campaign the better. 2. Once you get Press interested always keep reminding people to include a mention of “How people can help”. Ask journalists in particular to mention the LAM Action website address. There are details there on how to donate and links to Virgin Money Giving and JustGiving, as well as more information about LAM itself. 3. A good photo alongside any article is very powerful indeed. The photo with Darren’s article is an excellent example – cleverly linking all the threads – the runner, LAM patient, family, oxygen dependency. The headline is also designed to gain the reader’s attention and to make them want to read more about the story. Top Fundraising Ideas • Bag packing/collection at local supermarket. Rope in a few friends. You will need to get permission from the supermarket manager, and book in a day for you to come in. You will need to contact them as soon as possible as they book up in advance. • Quiz night at local pub. If your local pub already holds a quiz night, ask if the proceeds can be donated to LAM Action. You will need to advertise this on posters beforehand, so that people will dip in to their pockets more readily on the night! If your pub doesn’t already hold a quiz, speak to the landlord about your idea. If you choose a mid-week night the quiz should bring in more business for the pub, so ask the landlord if he will throw in a basic buffet for free and/or donate a percentage of the bar takings. • Do jobs for your neighbours. If you are good at gardening or decorating or washing cars you can offer these services to your neighbours in return for a donation or set fee per hour. • Charity Ball/Dinner/Disco/Themed Party. Everybody loves the chance to dress up a bit and let their hair down, especially when it’s for a good cause - a black tie ball, a dinner dance, a 70s or 80s disco night or a fancy dress party would all be popular, while wine tastings or gourmet nights would all be in the best possible taste! • Auction of Promises/Raffles. Ask your local businesses if they could donate some prizes to be auctioned or raffled, i.e. day at a Spa, dinner for two at a restaurant. Write to sporting personalities and professional clubs to ask for autographed kit or photos that can be put under the hammer. • Bring and Buy Sale / Car Boot Sale / Cake Sale / Craft Fair. Got lots of unwanted stuff in the loft or garage you’ve been meaning to shift for ages? Why not sell it at a Bring & Buy Sale or Car Boot and donate the profits. Good at making cakes or handicrafts? Arrange a Cake Sale or Craft Fair at your local hall, charge a small entrance fee to cover the hall costs and then everything you sell is for the charity. • Bucket collection. Grab some buckets and take some friends along to your local music venue or football club to collect before and after a concert or match. You can also collect outside your local library or public places. You will just need to ask permission before you do so and check with your local council whether they have any restrictions. • Musical/Comedy Evening. Gather some talented musicians /singers or comedians for an evening’s entertainment in the local hall. Sell tickets for the event and charge for drinks and snacks in the interval. • eBay charity sale. Find some things to sell on eBay or Gumtree and put a charity banner beside it so that people know they are donating to a good cause. • Race Night. Organise an event and show a film of a horse race with eight to ten numbered horses. Guests bet on the horse they think will win. Films come sealed so nobody knows the outcome in advance. You run the betting desk and take a percentage of the profits. There are several companies on the internet who provide the films. Other ideas include: • Coffee Morning/Afternoon Tea for your friends and neighbours, ask them for donations • 3 Peaks Challenge/Ridgeway National Trail/Hadrian’s Wall Path/London to Brighton sponsored walks • Ask local businesses/organisations to choose LAM Action as their charity of the year • Donations from talks at groups • Collection tins placed at your local shops • Ladies Night with makeup/fashion stalls etc. • Lottery Bonus Ball Scheme – get 59 members, £1 per ball weekly, bonus ball wins £40, £19 to LAM Action, over a year that’s almost £1,000 raised. • Corporate Sports Day – challenge other companies to tug of war/egg&spoon/sack race etc. £50 for a team of 10 • Non uniform days in schools, pupils donate a pound • Donations instead of birthday or wedding presents • Head shaving • Recycling ink cartridges • Garage/front garden sales of unwanted items • Sponsor a brick in a new building • Christmas Carol service • Guess the amount of sweets in a jar • Bottle/chocolate tombola – get local shops to donate bottles or short dated confectionery LAM Action Fundraising Pack 2019 9 LAM ACTION Supporting women with Lymphangioleiomyomatosis
Fundraising Ideas for the Workplace Not a bad place to try some fund raising ideas, you even have a captive audience to work with! • Have a dress down day at work: could be themed e.g. school uniform, pyjamas, or bad taste - bad hair, bad tie, the worst shirt. Charge £2 per person with a bottle of champagne for the best or worst outfit. • Director service: Sponsor the directors to dress as waiters and waitresses and serve lunch to staff members. • Cycle or walk to work and put the money you would otherwise spend on transport towards your fund - and reduce pollution at the same time! • Sponsored lunch run: Offer to pop out and buy lunch for your busy colleagues. At 20p a go, five lunches a day will raise over £20 in a month. • In those workplaces where there is a staff canteen, ask people to bring sandwiches and give the money saved as a donation. • A cake sale at work every Friday - make a regular thing of it so the people plan ahead. • The cake divide: Bake or buy your cake, divide it into eight slices and sell them at 50p a shot. In six months you’ll have raised over £100 and won the undying love of your workmates. • Guess the weight of the cake/number of sweets in the jar competition. • Office tuck shop: Buy bargain packs of chocolate bars, crisps and sweets, then set up a stall at work and sell them to your colleagues. Charge them a bit more than the usual retail price. This has been known to raise about £50 per month in an office of 120 particularly peckish people! • Weekend meat and wine draw for joints of meat and bottles of wine to be won every Friday - perfect for the weekend! Towards the end of the week, sell raffle tickets for 20p each or £1 for a strip of five. Meat and wine are popular, but you could include chocolate and flowers too. The first ticket drawn gets the most expensive prize, second gets the second priciest, etc. In a big office, different departments can run the draw on a rota basis. • Jars of money: If you work for a large organisation, place a glass jar for coins/small change in each department and give a prize at the end of the collecting period to the department that has donated the most. • Pocket Money: Ask everybody to donate an hour’s pay or request that they come into work with only a pound coin in their pocket, this money to be given to LAM Action. • Party Pounds: Persuade the organisers of the office Christmas Party to add a pound to the cost of each ticket and donate the extra money raised. • Desk Sale: We’ve had car boot and garage sales, so why not stock your desk with stuff you don’t want anymore? • Night In! Persuade colleagues who frequent pubs and clubs not to go out on one Friday or Saturday night and to donate the money they save. • Sponsored stairs: Do you work in a high-rise building? If the answer is yes, get your colleagues to sponsor you to use the stairs instead of the lift for a set period. • Swear box: Perhaps 20p for each offence. Alternatively make your colleagues cough up every time their mobiles ring in the office. • Sweepstake: Organise a Premiership, Wimbledon or Grand National sweepstake at work - betting on individual matches, players or riders. • ‘Charity of the Year’: If your company has one of these and the staff have a say in the selection process, nominate LAM Action and persuade your colleagues to do the same. • E-mail contacts: Contact everyone in your address book and explain what you are doing and that if everyone gives a small amount you will reach your target. Where Does Your Fundaising Money Go? Most of the money that you raise for LAM Action goes toward research involving LAM. Research in a laboratory is an expensive business, with high costs driven by the requirement for specialised equipment and reagents. Below is an outline of the direct costs involved in bench research, and the example of costs associated with a single experiment. Personnel The main costs associated with research are personnel costs. Each project requires at least one experienced researcher known as a postdoctoral research fellow, or ‘postdoc’. The Personnel postdoc will design and perform experiments, analyse costs data, and prepare publications and presentations. (per PhD students also perform research, under supervision, annum) Postdoctoral as they complete the work for their thesis. Research Fellow PhD Student £35,000 £14,000 Materials The materials used in our research – which we call consumables – are expensive. We need single-use sterile plastics for tissue culture, specialised medium to grow our cells, drugs and antibodies which cost hundreds of pounds for a fraction of a millilitre. We even have to buy extra pure water for our experiments! Research grants normally include at least £13,000 per annum for consumables. Equipment Even the simplest biological research equipment tends to cost hundreds or thousands of pounds. Something as basic as a centrifuge can cost £2000, and you cannot do any molecular biology without one. A single microscope objective lens can cost £700. Just keeping some of our larger pieces of equipment involves running costs of thousands of pounds a year in service contracts. How much does this experiment cost? This is a very simple experiment where we investigate the expression of some proteins in our cells to help us decide what type of cells they are. We use specific antibodies to detect the proteins. Cell Culture Materials This includes special medium to grow the cells, and sterile plastic ware (flasks and dishes): £50 for one experiment. Antibodies We need 6 of these, costing around £200 each: £1200 (though this will be enough antibody for several experiments!) Personnel Costs To perform the experiment, image the cells and analyse the data: around £100. General Lab Consumables Things like pipette tips and buffer solutions that we use in all of our experiments: about £50 for one experiment. Total cost = around £1,400 LAM Action Fundraising Pack 2019 11 LAM ACTION Supporting women with Lymphangioleiomyomatosis

Withdrawal Through Injury or Illness Whilst we obviously very much hope you will not need to withdraw from the charity event in which you are planning to take part, there may be circumstances beyond your control which leave you no choice. However our charity places are not free. LAM Action has to pay for them in advance. The current cost for the London Marathon is nearly £300 per place. Please give us as much advance notice as possible if you are likely to withdraw. Early notice of withdrawals means we have more time to try to find and enter a replacement prior to the organisers’ deadline for replacement entries. If you find during training that you are nursing a long-standing injury or have an illness which you feel might not clear up and is interfering with your training, please advise David Mercer (david.mercer@office.lamaction.org) so he can agree a course of action with you. One Final Tip …from others. For the event itself, we recommend that you print, write or stick your first name in big letters on the front of your shirt so that it is easily readable from 20 yards away. As a LAM Action participant in the London Marathon, or Ride London you will be provided with a running vest or cycle shirt with your name on it and a text giving number – so spectators can donate as they watch you run past and cheer you on when they see your name. If you are taking part in another event or have created your own challenge please let LAM Action know and we would hope to provide kit with the LAM Action logo on it to help raise awareness.
