WEEk THREE If you only focus on the problem, 21/06/19 you might miss the solution. Well done Y6 I am incredibly proud of all of our amazing Y6 students (and their English teachers led by Mrs Gutteridge); who have all worked so hard on their writing over the last few weeks. I hope that Y6 have a great trip to Condover next week. I will be visiting them on the evenings to see how they are getting on. Careers and Activity Days On Thursday 18th July Y8 will be enjoying a careers day led by an external careers adviser. All other year groups will be involved in an activity day in their year groups. More details to follow. Staffing changes for September 2019 Mrs Swartz, our music teacher is sadly leaving us to work closer to home. We will be sad to see her leave PMS but we wish her well in her new post. Mr Corbett, an experienced specialist music teacher will be taking over as Teacher of Music from September. He is known to many of our children as he has been working as a cover teacher for us for several months and knows many of the children through local football fixtures. I am thrilled to have him join our teaching team. L’hebdo 21/06/19
Sports Day Dear parent/carer, We are looking forward to our annual sports day on Thursday 27th June. All students who are participating in any of the events, whether it be running, throwing or jumping, they will need to come to school in their PE kit and stay in it for the rest of the day. If your child is not participating, then they will need to wear their uniform as normal. All students will still need their stationary and books for their afternoon lessons. The forecast is good, showing as dry with sunny spells. Therefore, do provide adequate protection for your child from the sun and if it gets cooler; their dark tracksuit bottoms and PE long sleeved top. Please note: students will not be allowed to run/throw or jump in their tracksuit bottoms. They will also need their bottles already filled with water. Ice cream will be on sale for students during the morning. These will be at a cost of 50p. There will also be a gluten free ice cream option. Students should bring their money down to the field at the start. They will not be able to go to their lockers or class/cloakrooms once the day starts. The day aims to begin at approximately 9:15am and continues until 11:10am, when students will go for their break time. This will last for 15 minutes and they will return to the school field and Sports day re-commences. We aim to finish at 12:25pm. If you are joining us as a spectator, then upon arrival, please wear the visitors badge that you will be issued with and take your seats. Benches will be provided for those who need extra room. For example, parents with a pram. If you do want to take photos, then please respect the request that they will not be put onto social media. Your cooperation with this is appreciated. This year, the KS2/KS3 long jump, KS3 shot putt, KS2 turbo javelin and KS2 ball throw (field events) will be taking place during the morning of track events. If your child is involved in long jump, then there will be seating available at the long jump pit for you to watch your child. For safety reasons, there will be no extra seating at the other field events and we ask that you respect the safety barriers in place. Thank you. All the track events will be watched from the side of the track. For safeguarding reasons, we ask that you stay in the parent/carer designated area unless you are going to the canteen to buy food/drink. A section of the track will be used for ‘crossing’. This service will be available all morning except 11:10-11:25am when the students have their break time. We would appreciate it if you could vacate the dining corridor at this time as it can become very congested. The KS3 javelin and discus will take place in the afternoon. Spectators are not allowed to stay for this due to the strict safety rules required for these events. We look forward to seeing a good turnout on Thursday and we are also looking forward to seeing our students enjoy the day, achieving for their ‘House’, no matter what their ability. Yours sincerely, S Sutton Mr S Sutton Head of Physical Education L’hebdo 21/06/19

Year 7 Maths groups Year 7 Maths groups have changed from Monday 17th June in readiness for Year 8. There may be some tweaks to the groups in September depending how the groups are over the next few weeks. Even though Year 7 have completed their GL tests they are now working on areas for improvement identified from the tests, so in September they will be ready for their next challenge with complete confidence. If you have any questions about this please get in touch with your child’s class teacher who will be able to liaise with the maths department. Year 6 Trip to Condover Hall Year 6 go to Condover Hall on Monday morning. Please can all students come to school in the morning wearing hiking clothes - suitable footwear, waterproof and bring packed lunch plus refillable water bottle. (along with sun cream hopefully!) The aim is to have a picnic up in the hills - weather dependent - and so a rucksack or similar would be a good idea. Please label all medications clearly and provide suitable instructions for administration. This needs to be ready to handover to staff, along with pocket money in change and in a named purse or wallet on arrival at school. Students will also be asked to collect spare inhalers etc from the school office. Luggage is to be labelled with child’s name and that of the school too. Please look out for a text giving them a direct number to contact PMS staff at Condover to be used in case of an emergency. We also will be writing a Condover Blog which will be available on our Facebook and Twitter pages. Keep an eye out and support the trip with a like and a share. L’hebdo 21/06/19

Year 8 only - Visit to Alton Towers On Friday 12th July, we will be taking Year 8 pupils to Alton Towers as a reward for their hard work throughout the year. Pupils will need to arrive at school as normal but will return to school at approximately 6.00 pm (depending on traffic). The cost of this trip will be £26.50. All pupils should bring with them a packed lunch and a drink or, if they prefer, they can purchase food on site (though food prices tend to be high). School uniform is not required but pupils should be suitably and sensibly dressed and be mindful of the weather conditions. Your child should bring with them a high factor sun cream and a hat, in line with our school policy relating to care in the sun. On this occasion, pupils can also bring their mobile ‘phone with them to contact each other in the theme park and for us to contact them, if necessary. If they do bring their ‘phone, we will ask for their number just for use on that day for safeguarding purposes. Numbers will be shredded afterwards. Please note, though, that school cannot be responsible for loss or damage to ‘phones which are brought along on the day. It is the responsibility of individual children to take care of their ‘phone and other belongings. Staff will be available to the pupils during the day either by phone or at the designated meeting point. The pupils are reminded they must follow all safety guidance for each ride and their movement around the site. Children will be informed that if they do not show a positive attitude in lessons and around school during this term, then they will not be allowed to go on the trip. The school’s decision on this will be final and no discussion will be entered into. Please make payment for the visit via Parent Pay by Friday 14th June 2019 if your child is attending the trip. Please also let us know if your child has a current Merlin pass prior to making any payment. Payment will be for coach only £9.80. Please also note that we will not be able to buy tickets for pupils who have not paid by this date and they will, therefore, not be able to go on the trip. Those of you who followed our updates on Facebook during our week away will have seen that this year’s visit to France was a resounding success. Fifty-five excited Year 8 children and six staff set off from Wolgarston High School at 5.30am on Monday for the Château de Grande Romaine in Lesigny, 20 miles South-East of Paris. We arrived at 6pm French time, which just gave us time for a tour of the Château and its grounds, our evening meal and then to collapse into our beds after a very long day. We arrived back at school at 9.30 on the Friday night, tired but having had a wonderful time and made many memories to last a lifetime. We had a packed itinerary during the week and Tuesday was our busiest day. In the morning the students planned what they were going to eat for their lunch and travelled to the market in the beautiful little town of Brie-Comte-Robert to buy the ingredients. Naturally, most managed to do some additional shopping while there. Then it was back to the Château to prepare their lunch. In the afternoon we went to the medieval town of Provins to watch a show of horsemanship, jousting, dragons and princesses. Tuesday evening was possibly the highlight of the whole visit – Paris by night! We cruised down the Seine on a Bateau Parisien, seeing all the main sights of the city and then our coach driver drove us past the Eiffel Tower and up the Champs
Elysées in the dark, so that we could see the “City of Light” living up to its name. On Wednesday we had a shopping trip to Melun in the morning, followed by a picnic lunch and a guided tour around the stunning Château Vaux le Vicomte. Château Vaux le Vicomte and its formal gardens were designed and built by the same team that went on to design Versailles for Louis XIV. After our evening meal, the students enjoyed a boules competition and the Million Pound Drop French quiz. On Thursday the group visited a fromagerie (cheese factory), learning how Brie is made and, of course, doing lots of tasting. We also spent half of the day making the most of the facilities at the Château, abseiling, climbing and doing archery. We also managed to have a dip in the heated swimming pool, before our evening activity: Crêpe making.
On Friday we said goodbye to our PGL guide, Sam and set off for home. On the way home we visited the very moving Canadian World War 1 Memorial at Vimy Ridge. The Year 8 students were able to see the landscape with craters where unexploded bombs still lie and experience the trenches for themselves. The success of the visit was largely due to the excellent conduct of the Year 8 children who accompanied us this year. I would like to thank all the students, who were a delight to be with for the week. All the PGL staff and our coach driver, Marcus, commented on how well behaved and polite they were throughout the trip and how well they listened and participated in activities. They were an absolute credit to their families and Penkridge Middle School. I would also like to thank my wonderful staff team of Mrs Tyler, Mrs Watts, Miss Barnes, Mr Sutton and Mr Hodson for making the trip such a success. The Year 8 children who went to France are now able to obtain copies of the photos taken during the visit – we took over 800 photographs, so there will be
plenty for them to choose from. If the students bring a memory stick into school, they can select the photos they want to keep and save them to their stick. I look forward to organising another, equally successful, visit in 2020 for next year’s Year 8 pupils (please see below). Mme. Wilson
Year 8 Study Visit to France 27th April – 1st May 2020 Year 7 students have been given letters this week about the Year 8 Study Visit to France in 2020. This visit is optional. We have decided to visit the same centre as we did this year. The group will be staying at the Château de Grande Romaine, in Lésigny, 20 miles South-East of Paris. This centre is run by PGL Adventure Holidays. You will find all details in the letter about the visit and how your child can apply for a place. I would also recommend that you have a look at the Château on the PGL website (http://www.pgl.co.uk/) under Secondary Schools Trips to see everything it has to offer. Mme. Wilson
