Growing up in England, I was born into football, however, I didn’t enter the structured game until my later years of child development. As a young kid, I played a lot of street football and played casually until I joined my first team aged 13. Throughout my playing career, I adopted a leadership role and very quickly noticed a passion for coaching, whereby I came involved in various coaching roles from the age of 16. EMILY HUSBAND Head Coach First Grade – Sydney University FC WHEN DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED IN FOOTBALL? Football has been a part of my life since I was born, my family and I are big Leeds United supporters and growing up I would play in the back garden with my brother and dad which is where my love for the game started. BRIEF BACKGROUND IN FOOTBALL I joined my first team at nine and just loved playing. I would always have a ball at my feet and things just went from there. I went on to represent my county, played for Huddersfield Town, Manchester City and Leeds United, then I got a scholarship for the University of Texas at Brownsville in the USA. Whilst in the US, that’s when I started gaining an interest in coaching, starting out with u4/5s on a weekend, before taking up more and more coaching work because I was enjoying it so much. WHY DID YOU BECOME A COACH? When I started out in coaching, I had so much enjoyment from playing football that I wanted others to experience that too. As I have grown as a coach, it’s so motivating seeing players grow not just on the pitch but as individuals too. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO GIRLS WANTING TO BE FOOTBALL COACHES? Do it for the love of the game, you have the ability to positively impact a player’s life through sport; that is invaluable for me. HOW IS YOUR CLUB SHAPING UP IN 2022? ELYSE FINLAYSON Head Coach Reserve Grade – Illawarra Stingrays WHEN DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED IN FOOTBALL? I’ve played football ever since I could remember. My first club that I ever played for was Thirroul Football Club, where I played through all my junior years before moving into the National Premier League with the Illawarra Stingrays in 2006. Thirroul was always a good club, and even after I moved away as a player, I refereed there to earn some money. From there, I began my coaching journey whilst playing at clubs such as South Coast Taipans Futsal Club and Illawarra United Stingrays Football Club. I started playing football at the age of six at my local soccer club and continued playing up until I was 16 and had to step away due to the constant injuries. WHY DID YOU BECOME A REFEREE? I became a referee because of my dad, and it was some good money as a 13-year-old. My attitude and beliefs have changed since then and I now referee to stay fit and to keep involved in football without constant injuries.
