BUSINESS STUDIES 10 Business Studies Optional Contact Person Mr Moore Course Costs Nil Description of Course This course gives students a taste of senior Business Studies as well as equipping them with useful skills for life. The course is divided into three modules: Personal Accounting, Economics, and Enterprise. Personal Accounting focusses on vital skills such as budgeting and understanding money, interest, and credit cards. Economics seeks to understand how the economy works, the role we as consumers play in the economy, and how consumers make important decisions. Enterprise topic is a practical, hands on topic where students learn about innovation, how businesses operate, and how students personally can set up a business. Students can make profit themselves on Market Day by creating products and selling them to teachers and students. This is a great opportunity to put into practice the skills students have learnt during the year. 5
DRAMA 9 Drama Optional Contact Person Ms Reid Course Costs Nil Description of Course Drama is a practical performance subject which allows students to develop their confidence. Students will learn drama techniques and drama conventions. They will work with scripts and create their own original performance work, which will be performed. Students will learn basic mime, stage craft, performance, and ensemble skills. Students will develop their self-management, critical thinking, and collaboration skills in this course through working individually and as a member of a group. 10 Drama Optional Contact Person Ms Reid Course Costs Costs for workshops and performances: no more than $30. Description of Course 10 Drama is a practical course where students develop their performance skills, ensemble skills and confidence. Students will explore a variety of dramatic processes in class using scripts and by creating their own devised work based on a theme. Students will explore a theatre technology such as lighting/props/costume which may be assessed for a Level 1 Unit Standard. Students will also be expected to interpret, respond, and reflect on their experiences of drama through their written journal, which will be completed through Google Classroom. This course will help students to gain employable and transferable skills which include creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication. 6

Description of Course This subject provides students with an introduction to Te Reo Māori and Tikanga Māori (Māori culture and protocol). Attention is given to written and spoken Te Reo Māori and includes: the acquisition of useful phrases, extension of vocabulary beyond simple greetings, whakapapa, culture, and protocol. Description of Course This course provides students with an introduction to French language and culture. Students start to develop their French reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in this course. Topics include basic introductions, school, free time and holidays, food and describing your home and town. The course also incorporates learning about the French culture and history. 9 Japanese Optional Contact Person Ms Yasuda Course Costs $35: $15 Japanese workbook/$20 for online access to Education Perfect. Description of Course This subject provides students with an introduction to Japanese. Students learn to communicate in Japanese about themselves, family pets, sports, colours, school and personal likes and dislikes. They also learn numbers, times, and dates, as well as beginning to write in Japanese Hiragana script. Cultural information about Japan is included in the course. 9

Description of Course This course continues to build on the foundation laid in Year 9. By the end of the year students will be able to understand simple texts and describe aspects of their daily lives and immediate environment. We continue to work on reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills. In addition, we keep learning about French culture, festivals, and food. Topics covered include making plans with friends, daily routine, health, holidays, travel vocabulary and food. 10 Japanese Optional Contact Person Ms Yasuda Prerequisite Year 9 Japanese or equivalent Japanese ability. Description of Course This course is a continuation of the Year 9 course and work from previous years is consolidated and extended. Students can understand, construct simple text and interact in a simple way in supported situations. They will learn the second writing system, Katakana along with some Kanji to pursue the Japanese writing system. The most enjoyable part of this course is that students will experience, encounter, and explore more Japanese cultural, traditions and customs. 10

MUSIC 9 Music Optional Contact Person Mr Coulomb Course Costs $200 per year ($50/term) for private instrument lessons $100 per year ($25/term) for instrument hire if needed. Description of Course Year 9 Music is designed to be relevant to beginners and more experienced players alike. It is based around practical activities for the whole class, groups, and individuals, aiming to engage students at all levels. Students will learn the basics of reading music and will be encouraged to perform and compose/produce music themselves, using both instruments and computer software. Those taking music in Year 9 have priority in instrument/voice lessons. 10 Music Optional Contact Person Mr Coulomb Prerequisite Must own or hire an instrument and participate in formal itinerant or private instrumental lessons all year on their chosen instrument. Must participate in a supervised school ensemble. Course Costs $200 per year ($50/term) for private instrument lessons $100 per year ($25/term) for instrument hire if needed. Description of Course The curriculum involves performing, song writing/composing, music history and appreciating music. It is divided into these areas: • Performance – students are required to develop their instrumental skills throughout the year and are assessed on group or solo performances twice in the year. • Song writing/Composition – students will compose several pieces using their knowledge gained throughout the year. • Musical Knowledge – students will learn theory, aural, and practical skills simultaneously in an immersive environment. They will also study famous musicians in history and how they influenced music. • Theory and Aural – students will be directed and expected to self-support their development in this area through instrumental lessons, theory workbooks, and classroom activities. 13
PHYSICAL EDUCATION & HEALTH 9 Physical Education & Health Compulsory Contact Person Ms Dryburgh Course Costs Students are required to have a Birkenhead College PE t-shirt. Purchased form The Uniform Shoppe. Approximate cost $35 for t-shirt and their own sports shorts/track pants. Description of Course The Year 9 physical education and health course is designed to introduce and engage students in a range of physical activities and health topics that enables them to understand and take steps to support their four dimensions of well-being. 9 Sports Academy Selective Entry Contact Person Ms Dryburgh Prerequisite High performance athletes Course Costs Nil Description of Course The Sports Academy is for identified high performance athletes. The course will have both practical and theoretical aspects. Students will be introduced to a range of concepts such as training principles, leadership, and sports psychology. This course aims to cater for our school’s sporting talent, encourage excellence through identification, support, and mentoring. The Academy will run in the Second Semester and replace one of the Option subjects. 10 Physical Education & Health Compulsory Contact Person Ms Dryburgh Course Costs Students are required to have a Birkenhead College PE t-shirt. The one they used in Y9 is suitable or a new one will need to be purchased form The Uniform Shoppe. Approximate cost $35 for t-shirt if needed. Description of Course Year 10 PE looks at personal health and physical development, movement concepts and interpersonal skills. Students will participate in a range of sporting and physical activities ranging from swimming, athletics, fitness development, international sports, large ball games, striking and fielding. The course will focus on well-being and promoting participation and skill development in practical activity. Students will also have rostered blocks of Health throughout the year. These will focus on wellbeing, informed decision making and sexuality education. 14
10 Sports Performance Optional Contact Person Ms Dryburgh Course Costs For non-International students: Approximately $45 for trips to various sporting facilities. For International students: $85 for trips to various sporting facilities. Description of Course This option is aimed at students with a keen interest in sport, and a commitment to improving their sporting knowledge and skills. The course is designed to extend students’ knowledge and understanding of sporting principles, and to improve skills in a wide range of activities. Throughout the course pupils will be expected to have a high level of participation in both the theory and practical components of the course, and to work hard at developing their own fitness levels. The course also includes aspects from the digital curriculum where students will be designing a digital task. Students will also enjoy fun and challenging situations and develop teamwork and co-operative skills to overcome these challenges. Students will have the chance to gain 7 Level 1 credits as part of this course. Students will have the chance to take part in activities such as a Duathlon, High ropes, Team sports, Skateboarding, Parkour and E-sports. 15

Description of Course “Social Studies” is about how human societies work and how people can participate as active, informed, and responsible citizens. The course provides a foundation for the senior Social Science subjects of Geography, History and Media Studies. The main topics are: Cultural Interaction, Migration, Government and Management of Resources. We learn about important Social Studies concepts and develop important skills. Keeping up with current events is an important part of the course. 9 Creative & Critical Thinking Optional Contact Person Mrs Murphy Course Costs Nil Description of Course This innovative course helps learners understand their potential as creative and critical thinkers. We explore the growth mindset to develop positivity and resilience toward learning. This course is designed to assist students with their learning across other subject areas and develop their confidence. Description of Course “Social Studies” is about how human societies work and how people can participate as active, informed, and responsible citizens. Course Costs Nil Description of Course This course aims to teach students about a range of social science topics including criminology, psychology, anthropology, and politics. Students learn important skills in areas such as critical thinking, composing an argument, essay writing, criminal profiling, and debating. Students need to be prepared to work independently and in groups on a range of challenges to develop problem solving and research skills. This subject is designed for highly motivated students who are looking for a challenge, and the opportunity to better develop the general thinking skills they will need to excel in NCEA in future years. There will be Level 1 Achievement Standard credits in Social Studies available. 18
TECHNOLOGY 9 Food Studies Optional Contact Person Ms Boston Course Costs $50 for ingredients, recipe book and workbook. Description of Course This is a course which helps students gain independence in the kitchen. They learn how to follow a recipe by learning measuring, basic cookery terms and use of equipment. Students also learn food safety and kitchen management. There is a cultural study where students learn about flavours in different countries and they design a burger for their country. Students are encouraged to practise at home 9 Innovative Material & Processes Optional Contact Person Mr McKissock Course Costs $20 for take home materials costs. Description of Course This course provides learners with the opportunity to develop outcomes using a range of skills that could include electronic trialling and design, coding to influence their project, materials processes, and 3D printing. Using creativity, innovation and reflective processes, learners will generate outcomes that meet their needs and those of others. 9 Textile Technology Optional Contact Person Ms Boston Course Costs $17 for notions Description of Course Creativity within the field of textiles is the focus at Year 9. The course encourages students to take risks while expressing their ideas through fabric manipulation. Social issues such as silent activism through craft is a way all students can express their individuality. Sustainable textiles are also explored. Students create both textile art and a basic sweatshirt 19
10 Food Studies Optional Contact Person Ms Boston Course Costs $100 for the year ($25 per term) for food used and consumables. Description of Course This course is aimed at students who have an interest in food preparation and making healthy food choices. There is an emphasis on teamwork and working together. Topics include the understanding and use of safe methods of preparing food, cultural foods, making healthy food choices, and food product development. Practical assessment is focused on personal hygiene, kitchen management and correct use of recipes and equipment. 10 Innovative Materials & Processes Optional Contact Person Mr McKissock Course Costs For non-International students: $30 for materials. For International students: There will additional costs for materials. Description of Course A project-based course that involves working with a range of materials, workshop processes, and studying some theoretical aspects associated with each project. Students are taught the design process and are expected to produce their own design solutions to a set brief. This may include research, conceptual designing, planning, proto-typing and manufacturing the solution in the workshop. 10 Textile Technology Optional Contact Person Ms Boston Course Costs $35 for materials used. Students will need to also provide fabrics and patterns for projects. Description of Course This course uses the design process to design, illustrate, make, and evaluate projects using textiles to meet specific needs. Textile and garment construction are important practical aspects. This course would appeal to students who are interested in fashion and design, who have creative flair, enjoy practical work, and are independent workers. Experimenting with embellishments is an important part of this course. Students will be expected to make garments for themselves as well as designing and creating textile items. All written work will be presented in a visual diary. Units could include: • Starting Smart – Textile art and the terminology of fabrics is explored as well as the design process. • Lounging Around – where students make PJs, a matching top, and a soft toy using fake fur. • Jean Therapy – where students recycle a pair of jeans to create a new textile item or garment, sustainability is the buzz word. Fabric Fantasy – where students experiment with adding colour and textures to fabrics to create new fabrics, including dyeing, printing, appliqué, felting, and many other techniques. 20
VISUAL ARTS 9 Art Optional Contact Person Ms Bell Course Costs $18 for materials used. Description of Course This course sees students learning about Art and ideas through the production of their own work. They will study drawing, painting, printmaking, and design, with an introduction to photography. Students will look at a wide range of artists and artworks from different cultures and learn to think in a critical, analytical, and creative manner. An essential subject for any students wanting a future proof education. 10 Art Optional Contact Ms Bell Course Costs $30 approximately for materials used.
