® Association of Fundraising Professionals Florida Caucus Dear Colleagues, Welcome to Planet Philanthropy 2018 and sunny Fort Lauderdale! Planet Philanthropy is Florida’s premiere conference on philanthropy. Our goal is for every attendee to take away at least one new idea that can be implemented immediately, bringing value to you as a professional and your organization. To reach this goal we have planned more than 48 educational sessions facilitated by thought-leaders in the industry and six dynamic keynote speakers bringing you best practices, novel ideas and stimulating conversations on a broad range of topics that will be relevent regardless of experience level. In addition, this conference features many formal and informal networking opportunities. Take advantage of the discussions at meals and during breaks. Ask questions, share solutions, and build your professional network of supportive peers from around the State. This conference would not be possible without the incredible work of the dedicated committee of our peers. Thank you all so much for sharing your time and talent over the past year! We would also like to acknowledge the tremendous support of our 2018 sponsors and exhibitors. Without their commitment to the nonprofit community and professional development, we would not have this opportunity to come together. Please take a moment to visit each booth in the exhibit hall and thank them for furthering our profession. If at any time you need assistance during the conference, please approach any member of the committee, wearing “Committee” ribbons on their nametag. We will do our best to make this an enjoyable conference experience for you. On behalf of the Planet Philanthropy Committee, we thank you for chosing AFP when taking the opportunity to invest in yourself and your professional growth. We look forward to providing the resources that will help your organization thrive. We are so glad you are here with us. Thank you again for joining us! Enjoy the conference! Tips for a Successful Conference Choose Your Program Wisely (and Early!) During every session, there are up to eight workshops to choose from. Decide which workshop you will attend in advance and get there early as some workshops fill up quickly. If the workshop is full, please have a second choice in mind. If you came with a group, we encourage you to split up and attend different programs. Your Evaluations are Extremely Important We want your opinion. Please complete evaluations in each workshop you attend. Please include any feedback that you think the Planet Philanthropy Committee should know, since we read the evaluations as well. They will also be used by the presenter to improve the program. Don’t forget to hand them in at the end of the workshop. Make a New Contact While You Eat You may be here with colleagues but try sitting at a table filled with people you don’t know. When you do sit down, introduce yourself, and get involved in the conversation. You’ll be amazed by whom you’ll meet. And while we are on the subject of meals… Special Meals If you requested a vegetarian or special meal on your registration form, you will be issued a card at registration, which you should show at meals to receive your special option. If you did not sign up in advance and you would like a special meal, you can check at the registration desk, but it might not be possible to fulfill this request at this late date. Download the Scavify App to Your Mobile Device Explore, interact and engage with exhibitors and other attendees at Planet Philanthropy and take part in the scavenger hunt taking place throughout the conference. And Hey... Who doesn’t like a little friendly competition or a chance to win prizes? For more info see page 16. Things to Remember • Your name badge is your pass to all meals, events, and workshops. Please wear your name badge at all times. • Introduce yourself to people! Give out lots of business cards and leave with none. • Please silence or turn off cell phones during conference meals and sessions. • Stay for the Closing Plenary Session on Tuesday. Scavenger Hunt winners will be announced then. • Take time to visit with exhibitors during the breaks. Learn about services and solutions that can help you and your organization. • Conference committee members are happy to help and answer questions. Look for them at registration, the info table and roaming the halls with their signs. 2

Keynote Speaker Opening Plenary Session: Sally Karioth, PhD, RN Finding Joy in What You Do Some public speakers make you laugh. Some speakers make you cry. Some speakers make you look at life differently. Sally Karioth is a very special public speaker, because she makes you do all three. It is a gift she has acquired from her varied experiences as a nurse, teacher, writer, talk-show hostess and nationally renowned grief therapist. If one sentence characterizes the message of her speeches, it is her slogan: ‘’Life is not a dress rehearsal.’’ ‘’Everyday,’’ she tells audiences, ‘’you should have at least one exquisite moment.’’ Karioth holds degrees from the Wisconsin-Green Bay Bellin School of Nursing, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Florida State University and the University of Florida. Dr. Karioth is a longtime faculty member of the Florida State University College of Nursing, where she teaches one of the university’s most popular courses, called ‘’Death, the Individual and the Family.’’ For more than 35 years, Karioth also has been a counselor, helping people cope with the death of loved ones. Her concern is parents who have lost a child to death. Her book, If You Want To Know If You’re Dying, Ask the Cleaning Lady (And Others Thoughts On Life and Happiness), offers a common sense, sometimes humorous, approach to illness and death. Karioth has also contributed to two other widely available books: Chicken Soup for the Surviving Soul and Feeling Safe: Talking To Children About War and Terrorism. Karioth has been active in trauma work and is called frequently to events nationwide to speak to tragedy survivors and mental health officials suffering compassion fatigue. Karioth has received numerous national, state and local awards, and appeared in two-award winning public service films. She appears frequently in radio and television shows. 4
