V’Asu Li Mishkan, V’Shachanti B’Tocham Make for me a sanctuary, and I will dwell among you These words were said by God to the children of Israel as they wandered the desert. They were commanded to create a central dwelling place for God as they navigated the unknown. Over the past year and a half, we too were forced to navigate a world entirely unknown to us; separated from family, friends, and congregation. So what did we do? We created little mishkanot, small sanctuaries, in each of our own homes. If we could not gather in our sanctuary at Temple Israel together, we did the next best thing. We zoomed into each other’s small sanctuaries and came together to pray, celebrate, mourn, study, bake, sing, and play. We were not wandering alone or aimlessly, because we remained a tightly knit community. We brought holiness into each of our homes through mutual support, virtual connections, and the commitment to bring our community through the pandemic whole. Perhaps one of the most difficult moments to have to remain in our own small sanctuaries was the high holidays. I remember being on my couch, watching myself on our TV, imagining all of you doing the same. I think we can all agree it was a holiday like no other. Despite being apart, each of us created beauty and meaning within our own homes, worshipped as a virtual congregation, and brought in 5781 with optimism for the future. As we look towards 5782, we are thrilled to be welcoming you back to Temple Israel, to begin the new year together. Thank you to all those who participated in our high holiday survey, letting us know how you would feel comfortable returning to in person worship. If you did not take the survey, please do so. You can find it on our website. Just as the children of Israel didn’t build the mishkan alone, we will build our return-to-temple plan together as well. We are blessed to have our magnificent pavilion to hold services, with our sanctuary as an indoor option in the case of inclement weather. Our goal is for you to feel safe and able to focus your spirit on the words we will say and the songs we will sing. If you choose to remain virtual, please know that we will also be streaming our services to your small sanctuary as well. We understand there are many reasons why some might choose to remain home, and we want to assure you that you will be included fully in our worship services. In the coming weeks, you will be receiving information as to what services will be offered, and how to register for services. We are creating a landing page on our website to help you navigate this process. We will also have staff in our office prepared to answer any questions you might have. We are ready and determined to come back together stronger and better than ever. Here is to looking forward to coming together to usher in, we pray, a year of health, happiness, and peace. Mazel Tov The Susan and Rabbi Harold Loss Early Childhood Center is celebrating the careers of two wonderful teachers this year. Eileen Rodner and Fern Genser are incredible educators, compassionate people, and devoted sisters, who many have trouble telling apart from each other. Throughout their careers, they held many positions in the ECC and were even teaching partners together for a stretch of time. They are consummate educators and have shaped the lives of countless children. After taking on the immense challenge and satisfaction of teaching through the COVID pandemic, both have announced their retirement. Eileen Rodner has been an integral part of the Temple Israel ECC for 33 years. Eileen’s knowledge, passion for education and ability to challenge and advance children’s thinking is immeasurable. She fostered a love of learning. Even after decades of teaching, Eileen still offered new ideas to engage children and scaffold learning. Eileen expected the best from herself and her students, leaving a legacy of life-long learners. Her devotion to education is only matched by her incredible compassion for people. She made sure that each milestone amongst the staff, happy or sad, was properly recognized. Fern Genser shaped the early childhood experience for hundreds of children during her 25 years at the ECC. Her passion for teaching and imparting the love of learning is evident in each lesson she taught. Fern loves to tell stories and share memories. She embraced and encouraged the amazing growth her students would experience over the course of a year. Fern has touched the minds of many young people and their families throughout her career. She created the foundation for learning in all her students and her legacy will live on in each of them as they continue their educational journey. Temple Israel thanks both Eileen and Fern for their dedication, hard work, passion for children, and commitment to Jewish Early Childhood Education. We wish them well on the next phase of their lives and hope memories of their time in the ECC always bring them joy. www.temple-israel.org July/August 2021 • Tammuz/Av/Elul 5781 11

FUNDS FUNDS IN ACTION IN ACTION We are thrilled to highlight 2 of our extraordinary funds in every issue of The Messenger. To see a complete list of all Temple funds, please visit www.temple-israel.org/funds IRWIN I. COHN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND Once, in an interview, Irwin I. Cohn (z”l) stated that the Jewish religion is what makes us Jews and that it should be preserved and maintained. His daughter, Rita Haddow (z”l), a well-known philanthropist in the Jewish community, shared her father’s love of Judaism and the Jewish people. They both valved tzedakah as an instrument to create a universe of opportunities. So upon Irwin’s passing, it was natural to perpetuate his memory through a family fund that would give back to the community. In 1985, Rita & John Haddow (z”l) established the Irwin I. Cohn Memorial Scholarship Fund that supports a trip to Israel for a Temple student. Both Rita and her father believed that there must be a connection between the people and the land in order to keep Judaism alive. The purpose of this fund encourages youth to connect to Judaism through a trip to Israel where they walk the land, taste the land, see the land, and learn its history. Although during the pandemic we were unable to send students to Israel, we look forward to the opportunity of fulfilling the purpose of the fund in the near future. To donate to this fund, go to: www.temple-israel.org/tributes or call: 248-661-5700 CARING COMMUNITY FUND When Kari Provizer, LMSW, ACSW, Director of the Robert Sosnick Family Life Center, began working at Temple in 1996, the Caring Community Fund was already established. It was created by clergy and executive staff who had the incredible vision of assisting Temple families in need. At the same time, members of the Jewish community already knew that in times of trouble there was one place that would always be willing to help: Temple Israel. The Caring Community Fund is dedicated to the community in countless ways, one of the most important being through support groups. Over the years, the fund has reached thousands of people through these vital support groups: AA, divorce support group, addiction groups, HUGS (Hope Understanding Growth and Strength) – divorce support for children, cancer support group, pre-marital workshops, grief & loss yoga, MS Path, SHARE (supports those who experienced miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant loss), caregivers group, and transgender parents & children support groups. Temple is proud to provide these safe, supportive environments for our community.
