TODAY, TOMORROW, TOGETHER
		 - GIRL SCOUTS IS ON YOUR TEAM.
Strength, resilience, togetherness, and the support of the community—that’s what Girl
Scouts of Southern Alabama is all about. So in this uncertain world, you can count on
one thing for sure: today, tomorrow, together, we are on your team.

What an unprecedented year 2020 was! While our nation fought the effects of a
worldwide pandemic, Girl Scouts in southern Alabama carried on – and did AMAZING
things. Our girls made the world a better place even as they faced difficult
circumstances themselves.

Most importantly, in 2020, Girl Scouting did not stop. We adapted, as we always have
and always will. Girl Scouts are SURVIVORS, and we will carry on into 2021 and
beyond! Let’s get started!

From the CEO
                      Dear Friends of Girl Scouting,
Board of Directors It all started three years ago in Texas, when two of my fellow
staff members and I were in Dallas for a meeting. One
Officers: afternoon we boarded a bus to visit our sister Girl Scout

girls, a multi-purpose lodge, an amazing challenge course,

Vice-Chair
On the way back to our hotel, we started a conversation that
Elizabeth Braswell went from “wow, how amazing that they created such a
2nd Vice-Chair wonderful place for their girls; we wish we could do that for
ours,” to “why can’t we do this for our girls,” and finally to
Karen Mixon “we will do this for our girls!”

MEMBERS AT LARGE three years, a committee was formed, each property was visited
and assessed, volunteers and girls gave their input, and a plan

Camp Sid Edmonds, Bay Minette
Over a period of five years, Camp Sid Edmonds will transition to a resident camp facility. The future Camp Sid will provide
a wide range of exciting programming opportunities for our girls in an environment that is modern and provides for their
individual needs as they progress in Girl Scouting.

Our improvements at Camp Sid, including the construction of a Dining Hall/Recreation Center, three campsites, two
bathhouses, recreational pavilion, and equine facility, will entice more girls to get outdoors and enjoy camping and nature.

Scoutshire Woods, Citronelle
Scoutshire Woods will remain open for camping and events, and we will work with the Mobile County School System, from
whom the property is leased, to maintain this historic property. Projects that will be completed by summer 2021 include
renovation of the bath house and replacement of tents at the High Winds Unit. We are excited to continue to offer
opportunities for fun and learning at our beloved SSW.

Kamp Kiwanis, Eclectic
Kamp Kiwanis will remain a resident camp facility and continue to welcome
troops for camping and events. Priorities at this camp include a new bunk-
house (formerly the Pioneer unit house) in the Pioneer Unit, which will be
completed by June 2021. This bunkhouse will sleep 18 and be a completed
renovated facility for our girls. GSSA will also make upgrades throughout the
camp property to enhance the experience of our girls and volunteers when they
visit.

Camp Humming Hills, Elba
Camp Humming Hills will continue to provide facilities for council events and
troop outings on a limited basis throughout the year. This property provides
our girls with an oasis of serenity in the beautiful southern Alabama forest.

GSSA’s priority is to continue to provide the best outdoor and camp
programming opportunities for girls and to ensure Girl Scouting remains
strong for future generations. We are deeply committed to using our resources
wisely, and evaluating the ability of our camp properties to enable our council
to better serve girls with the 21st-century leadership programming they want
today.

Be on the lookout for how your troop can help with special projects at these
properties!

We look forward to continuing to Focus on Her Future.

Cookie Program
Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama was excited to kick off the
2020-21 Cookie Program with a NEW cookie the Toast-Yay!™,
a French toast–inspired cookie dipped in delicious icing and full
of flavor in every bite. GSSA was also happy to offer the ability
to order Girl Scout cookies through the Grubhub app and have
them delivered directly to them.

We even teamed up with Brooke Burks with The Buttered Home
to create some yummy treats using Girl Scout Cookies, which was later featured in Parade Magazine.

Award recipients were recognized, and Girl Scout
                                       Gold Awards were presented.

We also honored our outstanding volunteers.

Together, we will make the world a

                Volunteer Awards
The heart of Girl Scouting is our indispensable volunteers who make it all possible! Because
volunteers contribute their time and skills in many ways, there are several Adult Awards that
are awarded to recognize their efforts.

Introduced in 1980, the Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest award
a Cadette can earn. It is symbolic of accomplishments in Girl Scouting

accomplishments in Girl Scouting and her community as she grows and

Mariners & Trailblazers
This year, we rolled out a troop just for our older Girl Scout adventurers, who love the outdoors and
are looking for high adventure! All girls, Cadette through Ambassador age, are welcome to join our
Mariner and Trailblazer troops. Mariners develop skills in swimming, safety, and rescue; canoeing,
kayaking, sailing, paddle boarding, or boating; and weather and navigation all on a variety of water
bodies. The Trailblazers develop skills in orienteering, survival camping, trail hiking, sports, and
environmental stewardship. Girls are welcome to join one of both troops! The adventures are endless!
Older girls are welcome to continue their journey with their traditional troop, or decide to move solely
                                      into these specialized troops.

If interested in becoming a Mariner and/or Trailblazer, please email

Dauphin Island Sea Lab

Adventure Day
Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama (GSSA) partnered with the
Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL) this past weekend for DISL
Adventure Day. During the event, Girl Scouts spent the morning
in the lab where they learned facts and anecdotes as they
examined and touched a large variety of preserved specimens
from the Gulf waters. The girls also had the opportunity to
visit the Estuarium, participate in a squid dissection, and go on a
two-hour vessel ride on the 65-ft research vessel Discovery. While
on the Discovery, they trawled Mobile Bay to collect and identify
creatures that inhibit our coastal waters.

Sail Away
We were so thrilled to be able to get our girls back out on the water
and back to sailing this year! In April, we had our Sail Weekend
on the beautiful Lake Martin. This program helps girls develop
courage, confidence, and character through the skill of sailing. The
girls learned things like basic water rescues, parts and rigging of
a sailboat, points of sail, weather, knots and hitches, navigation,
dingy sailing, sloop sailing, and open water sailing.

               Every Girl In A Park
From the backyard to the backcountry, Girl Scouts has a long and
storied history of getting every girl outdoors.

In fact, many Girl Scouts tell us “camping trips” are one of
the best things about their Girl Scout experience. It’s true:
connecting with the great outdoors in a girl-led setting is a
big benefit of belonging to Girl Scouts.

This is why we are so excited about our partnership with
the Alabama State Parks and Alabama Historical
Commission that lasts from May 1 to July 31, 2021.

From the Girl During my thirteen years in Girl Scouts, what I loved most were all
of the new experiences: going to Kamp Kiwanis for the first time in
elementary school, and, as I got older, going on cool trips like kayaking
with manatees, swimming with dolphins, snorkeling, caving, and
rappelling. I hope to carry the willingness to try new things forward
                          with me.

If I were to give one piece of advice to younger girls about Girl Scouts
it would be to stick with it! Our program has a lot of flexibility so you
can decide on things your troop wants to do, whether it is community
service, outdoor adventures, or celebrating Girl Scout traditions, and
then find a badge that fits with that interest which will help you plan
the activity. The older you get, the more opportunities become
                          available.
