JOURNEY TO ANTARCTICA: THE WHITE CONTINENT Aboard National Geographic Explorer | February 17- March 1, 2022 Dear Wheaton Traveler, I invite you to join me and my wife Lisa on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to experience the boundless beauty and pristine terrain of Antarctica. This remote continent and its precarious waterways have enthralled some of the most valiant explorers in history, and have been the scenes of triumph and tragedy since Captain Cook first sailed the region in 1773. We hope you will say “yes” to the explorer in you and join us on this expedition to the White Continent. Together, we will embark from Ushuaia, Argentina and cruise through the Drake Passage to the South Shetland Islands amid the Antarctica Peninsula – exploring the dramatic landscapes and remarkable wildlife that call this continent home. Trek through penguin rookeries, observe flocks of seabirds, learn about Antarctic ice conditions, and discover the sites of both past and present scientific expeditions. Our vessel for this amazing journey is the 148-passenger National Geographic Explorer, a nimble craft designed specifically for polar cruising – with comfortable cabins, exceptional amenities, and a knowledgeable and friendly crew. The Explorer’s small size provides the ability and agility to maneuver narrow channels and access bays that are closed for bigger ships. This ship also features an ice-strengthened hull and fin stabilizers for smoother sailing and the utmost in polar water safety. Lisa and I look forward to exploring the wonder of God’s creation with you. We hope you’ll considering joining us on this exceptional expedition – the final destination of our Seven Continent/Seven Years adventure with Wheaton College. Expectantly, Philip G. Ryken President Wheaton College
R emote. Untrammeled. Spectacular. Antarctica is one of the most exhilarating adventures on Earth. Every facet is thrilling and lovely. Its vastness is both humbling and uplifting, as is the ice in all its myriad forms. Relish the penguins—with their endlessly amusing antics, gabbling in their rookeries, bobbing by on a blue berg, or catapulting on to the shore. See mountains rising some 9,000 feet up from the sea and an abundance of marine mammals. Hike and explore by Zodiac. Travel with an expedition leader and naturalists who have hundreds of journeys under their parkas. A National Geographic Photographer will give talks and one-on-one photo tips in the field, and an undersea specialist captures rarely seen footage of life beneath the icy surface for viewing in the comfort of the ship’s lounge. Spend your days and nights on a once-in-a-lifetime polar adventure with Wheaton College. FEBRUARY 17, 2022: MIAMI, FLORIDA/USHUAIA, ARGENTINA Arrive in Miami no later than 11:00 a.m. Transfer to the Hilton Miami Airport Blue Lagoon Hotel and enter our “travel bubble.” Refreshments are available throughout the day. Depart this evening on an overnight flight to Ushuaia, Argentina. (L,D) FEBRUARY 18: ARRIVE USHUAIA, ARGENTINA/EMBARK SHIP Arrive Ushuaia, Argentina and transfer to the National Geographic Explorer for embarkation. (B,L,D) FEBRUARY 19: AT SEA/DRAKE PASSAGE We awake this morning well into our journey across the Drake Passage. Lying between Cape Horn and the Antarctic Peninsula, the Drake holds a unique place in maritime lore. Sometimes misty and gray, other times calm and clear, crossing the legendary Drake Passage is unforgettable―a milestone in any adventurer's personal travel history. (B,L,D) FEBRUARY 20-25: ANTARCTICA With long hours of daylight at this time of year, we have ample opportunity to explore the Antarctic Peninsula and the surrounding islands. In keeping with the nature of an expedition, our schedule is flexible so that we can take advantage of the unexpected—watching whales at play off the bow, taking an after-dinner Zodiac cruise, or heading out on an unplanned excursion. We anticipate offering opportunities each day to hike, kayak among the ice floes, and experience close encounters with wildlife. You may have the thrill of watching our powerful ship crunch through the pack ice, or step ashore to thousands of Adélie and gentoo penguins. You’ll learn how climate change affects the penguin populations, and how best to capture your images from a National Geographic photographer. Back aboard, our undersea specialist may present video from that day’s dive or show rare images taken up to 1,000 feet below the surface using our ROV. Our expert staff will craft an expedition where you will learn, see, and experience the wonders of the seventh continent. (B,L,D) FEBRUARY 26-27: AT SEA As we sail back to Ushuaia, an albatross or two may join the avian escort of seabirds that cross our bow, and our spotters will keep an eye out for marine life. There’ll be plenty of time to enjoy a wellness treatment, log some time in the gym, or catch up on the book you haven’t had a minute to read. Celebrate our voyage at a farewell dinner on board. (B,L,D) FEBRUARY 28 – MARCH 1: DISEMBARK/FLY TO MIAMI, FLORIDA After breakfast, we disembark in Ushuaia. Fly by charter to Miami. Please confirm departure and arrival dates/times before booking your flights. (Feb. 28: B,L)
