C T ommodore’s Comments hanks again to P/C Larry Bowyer and P/C Ron Bruce, as well as the outstanding work of Jim Reeves our own dock master Greg Spitzer! The East Marina is 99.9% complete, only needing the wooden cap rails on the sheet piling, and hopefully THE FINAL PAYMENT to Dale Marine. Our insurance agent has insured the East Marina, so we now have $1,250,000.00 in Dock Insurance & Business Interruption Insurance (the sheet steel is not insured). Our legal team (Bruce Partington, P/C Tim Burr, P/C Robby Youd, and our Fleet Captain Hal Smith) has resolved the details of the 12-month Marina Leases which will be assigned to our bank. Fleet USODA Captain Hal Smith and Chairman Tom Pace, Jr. continue their efforts to have “the world’s greatest” USODA event right here, in Pensacola, Florida. In addition to the event itself, they have secured a sponsor (Mike Papantonio, Esq.) for a giveaway of a brand new Full Race Opti for the opening Ceremony event at the Saenger Theatre. Read about the other sponsors in the Fleet Captain’s Report this month. Additionally, we will have US Sailing CEO Jack Gierhart, Commodore Phil Lotz and members of the New York Yacht Club, and Paul Cayard, who is essentially the “Tom Brady” of sailing (2 Olympic victories, 7 World Titles, 7 America’s Cups). Congratulations to the leadership and all of the volunteers for planning and executing this great event for the Pensacola Yacht Club! Our Membership Team of Dean Kirschner, Tiffany Meece, R/C Nicole Ferry, our Staff, and the Membership Committee continue to break all records. The Board approved the applications and posting of 8 New Members at our June 20th meeting. Total Membership is approaching 610 members! The Board has appointed a committee to study the “capping” of all membership classes, other than the Regular Voting Membership. Stay tuned, but if you have friends that would like to enjoy the benefits of Pensacola Yacht Club Membership, you need to get their names to one of our membership leaders listed above, soon! P/C John Matthews has announced a “Command Performance” of the Sundowners Ceremony on Friday, July 6th (at sundown). Please make every effort to ATTEND! PYC JUNIORS “How do we love thee? Let us count the ways!” SMART, ENERGETIC, TALENTED, GORGEOUS, SUCCESSFUL, SAILORS EXTRAORDINAIRE . . . PYC’S FUTURE! MAKE PLANS TO ATTEND THE USODA OPTIMIST NATIONALS - JULY 15-22 PAGE 3 | JIB SHEET
Vice Commodore’s Comments Facilities Report – June 2018 Carlton Proctor With the impressive new East Marina now completed – on time and on budget -- your Board of Directors is turning its attention to several other smaller but much needed improvement projects. • Perhaps the most noticeable is the addition of the gravel road and angled parking spaces that lie between the pool and our east beach. The project was the brainchild of Tom Pace, Board Member and Chair of the 2018 USODA National Championships that get under way July 13. The grading of the gravel road and the marking of the parking spaces were accomplished at minimum cost by PYC’s outstanding Dockmaster Greg Spitzer. The new road and parking spaces will enable USODA participants, parents and judges much better access to the beach area where the boats will be launched. It will also give more direct access to the East Marina by those members renting boat slips. • Greg also built a new and expanded loading dock at the rear of the clubhouse. The new dock will make ingress and egress much easier for service truck deliveries. Which begs the question: Is there anything this guy can’t do? • On another front, your Board of Directors has authorized General Manager Jim Warwick to negotiate with local carpet companies to replace the carpet on the Club’s ground floor, including the main entrance foyer and throughout the Grill Room. • It’s estimated the cost will be in the $10,000 to $15,000 range to replace the six-year-old carpet, which is definitely showing its age. Once bids are in and a contract signed, installation of the new carpet will take place sometime shortly after the USODA event, which concludes July 22. • Elsewhere, the Club has finished installing four RV hook-up sites on the west side of the Club’s property. The sites will provide electrical and water services. A per-night cost for RVs utilizing the four sites, which will remain grassy, has not yet been determined. All in all, 2018 has been a banner year for PYC improvements, both large and small. And there’s more to come! Stay tuned. Respectfully submitted, Carlton Proctor, Vice Commodore A LIFELONG LEARNER! Congratulations to our “already highly accomplished” member, Dr. David Chandler. David recently added a Masters Degree in Health Care Leadership to complement his other numerous titles and awards. Dr. Chandler, we are proud of your achievements! PAGE 4 | JIB SHEET
R M ear Commodore’s Comments emorial day is always epic at PYC. This year was no different, even though the weather didn’t allow us to Nicole Ferry have our waterslides! So now, Summer is officially here! Our membership is growing. We have 610 members to date. Clearly our members are talking to others about how great membership at PYC really can be. While our growth is commendable, it is only as good as our retention. We need to nurture our new members! You can help by introducing your self or by mentoring a new member. It gives you an opportunity to renew your love of PYC as seen through the eyes of a new member who is seeing it for the first time. If you want to join me in retaining our new members, contact me at 850-291-2325 or email: nkferry@bellsouth.net Have you checked out our “swag”? Coral Reef Sailing offers towels, shirts and hats. We are ordering items to have on hand but if it isn’t fast enough, look on our website in the member section. There is a ship store link that will take you to their site. Your swag is only limited by your imagination! Did you know that you can access our members’ contact information? Check out our website and enter the member section. You can actually see their information and access your own monthly bill. The website is always a work in progress. If you have any suggestions, don’t hesitate to reach out to me. Starting September 7th, and every Thursday thereafter in the month of September, you can learn the “West Coast Swing “or the “Cha-Cha.” Sign up soon! A round of applause should be given to our own Commodore’s wife, Susan Reeves. She had a dream. Etiquette classes at PYC have officially begun. A HUGE thanks to Pensacola Mayor Ashton Hayward for handing out the certificates of completion to the participants. The class was full! We are going to hold the classes again! Maybe even adult classes, if there is interest! If you see me around, don’t hesitate to stop me and give me feedback. I want this Club to do more than you think it can. This is your home away from home. This is your Club! We have our weekly blast each week that is sent via email on Saturdays. If you aren’t receiving them, please call our main line and ask for Jennifer. She can add you. The blast also has links to each event and how to make reservations. It is ideal for our staff to have a head count for each event so that we have enough food for each member and their guest. Welcome to our Newest Members! ∏LA SOCIEDAD de LOS VILLISTAS! Official Villista Pin Congratulations! Linda, Karen & LeAnne LeAnne Pickering Newest Villista Member Over the past month I have fielded several questions about pictures in the Jib Sheet and on the web site in which various people, male and female, seem to be wearing mustaches. The mustachioed people are all proud members of the Villista Society. This limited society is an important part of Regata al Sol, honoring those who have sailed or actively participated as race committee in 10 or more Regatas al Sol. Considering that the regatta is raced every other year, society members must be actively participating for a minimum of 20 years! The society was named for Pancho Villa, one of the most prominent figures of the Mexican Revolution who always sported a thick, heavy black mustache. He is credited for several decisive rebel victories forcing Mexican dictator Porfirio Diaz from power. There are many conflicting stories about Pancho Villa, leading one to wonder if he were a “good guy” or a “bad guy.” He had little appreciation for any government or authority. He had several wives without the benefit of divorce or annulment. He robbed trains and stole work animals then gave all proceeds to the poor, earning him the nickname of “The Modern Robin Hood.” He eventually made his way to Hollywood where he starred in movies about his life. The Villista Society name was chosen because the life of Pancho Villa was as ever changing and unpredictable as the Gulf of Mexico. He sought victories over dictators as we seek victories over weather and seas. During the regatta awards ceremony all members of the society are introduced as they take their place on the stage. With backs turned to the audience they apply their mustaches. New inductees are then introduced and brought to the stage. They are then awarded their own mustaches and pins by the current members. Its all very official, ceremonial, and flamboyant. This year our own LeAnne Pickering was inducted into the Villista Society. Needless to say, it is quite an honor to be wearing a mustache at the awards party. Currently there are 28 members in the Villista Society, including nine PYC members. PYC members who are also Villista Society members include Mike Beard, Ron Bray, Paul Gillette, Bob Kriegel, John Matthews, Jim Oyler, Linda Oyler, Talbot Wilson, and LeAnne Pickering. I might add there are only three women in this group and they all sail for Pensacola Yacht Club. Besides LeAnne and Linda, Karen Kriegel is also a Villista. When you see any Villista member, ask them for a Regata al Sol story. Their stories are many and varied. Article by: Linda Oyler PAGE 8 | JIB SHEET
Successful Rescue Completed at PYC Coordinated Efforts of a Good Samaritan, the EMS and PYC Source: The Pensacola News Journal Provided by Talbot Wilson June 9, 2018 at 10:00 AM PENSACOLA — A family of four whose boat sank in the rough waters of Pensacola Bay was rescued by a “Good Samaritan” who performed CPR on their baby, saving her life, before taking the family to shore. According to a report from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, on Friday, May 18 the family from East Brewton, Ala., had taken out their brand new boat, a 15-foot stick steer vessel that they had just purchased the day before, for a family outing on Pensacola Bay. The boat’s operator, 30-year-old Russell Lassiter, told FWC officials they launched the boat from Bill Dickson Boat Launch, left Bayou Grande and headed east toward Deer Point in Gulf Breeze. They were halfway across the bay when they realized the water was too rough, so they turned around and headed back toward Bayou Grande. On their way back, a large wave came right across their boat and swamped the entire vessel immediately, sinking it. Lassiter was thrown into the water along with, his wife, 25-year-old Shelby Shatto, and their children, a 3-year-old boy and 9-month- old girl. Both children were wearing life jackets at the time, the report said. The family treaded water for 25 minutes in 3- to 4-foot waves before being spotted by a sailboat operated by Michael Kirk, a catamaran charter captain and “Good Samaritan.” The report said Kirk struggled to get close enough to the family due to the rough waves, but was eventually able to pull all four from the water. The baby, however, wasn’t breathing when she made it onto the sailboat, the report said. Kirk called 911 and performed CPR on the baby, getting her to breathe again before rushing them to the Pensacola Yacht Club where help was available and coordinated with EMS. The mother and baby were taken to Sacred Heart Hospital and treated for saltwater ingestion, the report said. Shatto was released the same day she was admitted, but the baby was held another day for observation. An FWC officer who went to visit the pair in the hospital noted the baby was “alert and smiling” when he entered the family’s room. The same officer met with Kirk a few days after the incident and thanked him for his “heroic deeds.” By May 21, the family had returned to Alabama and the baby was continuing to see a doctor, but had “zero deficiencies.” The mother said all four family members were “doing great.” FWC officers tried to locate the capsized vessel but were unsuccessful. NOTE: Pensacola Yacht Club is proud to coordinate with the EMS, Fire & Rescue, and Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation - we try to be in a state of readiness for any potential emergencies. Ship’s Log Dave Hoffman This month I am excited to report that after 110 years we now have a photograph of our first commodore, George T. Morgan (1908-1909). Commodore Morgan was a prominent local attorney, city comptroller and attorney for the Escambia county commission before moving to Tallahassee to serve as a state tax auditor. The photo will be framed by our own Jean Russ and put in its proper place in the Commodores’ Lounge. The accompanying photo was discovered by UWF “super archivist” Jackie Wilson in the Henry Hilton-Green Research Center. Henry Hilton-Green was a prominent member of PYC and was a generous benefactor to our club as well as the UWF Historic Trust. Another connection to this discovery is that Commodore Morgan was elected county attorney in 1909 by a tie-breaking vote cast by then Commission Chairman H. Mck. Oerting. Mr. Oerting’s descendants have held leadership positions at PYC over the decades including John Oerting as PYC Commodore and as GYA Commodore. And who can forget our unforgettable D.O.? PYC’s 1st Commodore George T. Morgan The 2018Optimist Nationals Opening Ceremony July 14th at Plaza Ferdinand and the Saenger Theater American Magic is Coming! All Opti sailors entered in the Optimist National Championships are requested to attend a Gala Ceremony keynoted by an exciting, inspirational America’s Cup presentation in Downtown Pensacola’s historic Saenger Theater by USODA, The Pensacola Yacht Club and the PYC Satori Foundation and the New York Yacht Club American Magic, U.S. Challenger for the 36th America’s Cup. Fleet Captain’s Report VOLUNTEER FOR FUN – and a FREE LUNCH Hal Smith JOIN THE PRESTIGIOUS PYC RACE COMMITTEE! Assignments are made for all positions, but reserves are welcome and sometimes needed for the Junior Olympics June 30 – July 1 and the Optimist National Championship July 14-22. Contact our Race Committee chairperson, Betsy Moraski moraskib@cox.net, and Betsy will welcome you to our team. DO YOU HAVE A 14’ – 26’ CENTER-CONSOLE OR SIMILAR POWERBOAT? IF SO, WE NEED YOU! There will not be too many smaller powerboats for the Optimist Nationals. We need you, or rather your boat, and preferably the two come together. We need lots of small boats for mark setting, umpiring, safety, etc., for these large coming regattas. It is always a ton of fun to participate, and driving around your boat is a great way to play. Someone who knows where to set a mark, or what to do in a medical emergency, will be on your boat to do that work. This is yet another way to earn a free lunch. How can you beat that? ONE MORE COMMENT ABOUT REGATA AL SOL: Last month we reported that PYC members Paul and Rachael Gillette and Bob Kriegel won their respective classes. John Matthews coordinated events for PYC. But there is more: The Gillette’s “Atlantic Union II” walked away with “1st in the Racing Division,” “The President de Mexico Award” (1st Racing Division), “The Club de Yates Isla de Mujeres Award” (Navigator), the “Madden Randle Award” (Best Performance), “The Gulf Marine Award” (Ist Florida Racing Division), and “The Florida Governor’s Award” (Ist Florida Racing corrected) perpetual trophies. Bob Kriegel not only won the Non-Spinnaker class, but also beat all of the spinnaker boats in the two cruising spinnaker divisions – sailing non-spinnaker! Bob picked up the Class and Division trophies, as well as the “Van Cleef Award” (Cruising Division corrected), “La Secretaria de Marina Award” (Navigator), and non-spinnaker overall perpetual trophies. JUNE EVENTS: 1. Fiesta of Five Flags Boat Parade: PYC hosted the starting and end of the big event. Over 20 boats participated with a huge party in our ballrooms to initiate the craziness. 2. Navy Cup: We had some great individual efforts but participation was embarrassingly low. We will do better next year. 3. hallenge Cup: The PYC team launched a valiant effort on Saturday establishing a second place position, but slipped on C Sunday in tight scores. 4. Gulfport to Pensacola Race: Congratulations to Michael Patterson and his “Belafonte” crew for finishing just seconds behind world famous Randy Smyth and taking 2nd in the multihull class by finishing in 7 hours and breaking the previous course record by 3 hours! In addition, John Mathis and crew on “Forerunner” finished 2nd correcting just ahead of 3 other boats in the PHRF B fleet. “Atlantic Union II” and “Shanti” also proudly represented PYC in the 37 boat fleet. 5. I nternational Billfish Tournament: This tournament is for serious anglers in some of the best fishing waters anywhere. Hopefully, you were one of the lucky ones to participate. The Jib Sheet deadline was too early for results, but last year PYC members won big! 6. J unior Olympics: June ended with a big bang hosting the Junior Olympics for Optimists, Lasers and 420’s, while executives from US Sailing were here to observe. PYC is on the national stage. COMING EVENTS: July brings not only the traditional 4th of July Celebration, Blue Angels, and classic hotdogs and beer! It brings the Optimist Nationals with 350-450 boats/competitors from at least 12 different countries for 8 days of competition, July 15-22. Again we will be seen around the world with media keeping up with the regatta action and results. A huge team of great volunteers have organized an amazing event with Tom Pace leading us. His enthusiasm is infectious. You want to catch this. Talbot Wilson is making sure the world notices. Don’t miss coming to the Club and seeing all of the fun. PAGE 12 | JIB SHEET
C J ruiser’s Corner ere and Karen Allen ordered some nice weather for the June raft up. Saturday saw mid 80s with a nice Jim & Linda Oyler southerly breeze and bright sunny skies. Jere and Karen arrived at Fort McRee early enough to plant the PYC flag and secure a great spot on the beach for our feasts. They were soon joined by several more boats and almost 50 people. We were happy to welcome three new members and a potential member to our raft up group. Everyone enjoyed swimming, snorkeling, dinghy riding, and boat hopping all Saturday afternoon. What was Dave Norfleet searching for while he was snorkeling? Could it have been his anchor? As the afternoon progressed, the boaters began to assemble on the beach. A loud cheer was heard when Club Manager, Jim Warwick and Dock Master, Greg Spitzer arrived in a PYC boat loaded with delicious fried chicken and potato salad. That added the finishing touches to the many sides, salads, and desserts brought from the various boats. Many thanks to Jim and Greg for brining our dinner to Fort McRee. Y’all are the best! During the night a thunderstorm attacked the anchorage and flashlights could be seen all around as captains and crew were checking or adjusting anchors to make sure their own boats were secure and other boats were not a threat. We lovingly refer to this as the “3 AM anchor dance.” The storm was brief and all boats remained happy. Sunday morning brunch was tasty and varied as always. The weather was looking a little iffy so most everyone made the decision to head home early in the day and all were safe and secure by the time the afternoon thunderstorm arrived. Next raft up is scheduled for July 14 at Little Sabine. This is the annual Blue Angel Air Show and the biggest weekend of the year for Pensacola Beach. Everything that floats will be on the water for the show so it’s a good idea to get there early. Some boats arrive on Wednesday or Thursday. Ken and Shelli Branch will be hosting this raft up in conjunction with the Elks Club. Saturday afternoon after the air show the Elks will be grilling hamburgers and hotdogs in the picnic area under the building. There will be a nominal fee for the burgers and dogs. PYC members and Elks are asked to bring side dishes. The Sunday brunch will boast the usual Bloody Marys and Mimosas in the same location at the Elk’s lodge. Bring a brunch dish and celebrate the morning. This raft up is accessible by auto so if you are on “The Beach” come join us on Saturday evening or Sunday morning. See you on the water or around The South’s Finest Yacht Club. 2018 RAFT UP SCHEDULE Date: Hosts: Destination: July 14 Ken/Shelli Branch Little Sabine/Blue Angels August 11 Tom Pace TBD/Predicted Log Race September 8 TBD Larry/Ann Marie Bowyer October 6 Chip/Joyce MacMillan Pirate’s Cove/Lost Bay Regatta November 3 Jimmy/Lisa Bradley Fort McRee/Blue Angels December 8 Jim & Linda Oyler Marina Party & Brunch December 15 PYC “Lighted Boat Parade” January 1, 2019 Jim & Linda Oyler Brunch in the Sailing Center YOU CAN’T TOP THIS ! D S o You Ride? everal of the PYC Sons of Boaters motorcycle gang met June 5th at the Club to discuss Bob Kriegel activities for the remaining year and to share libations. We agreed to try to pick out dates well in advance for our planned rides not only to accommodate scheduling, but to encourage impromptu rides, as well. Anyone, anytime, can send out an email to our ride list (see above mailing list) suggesting a ride anywhere, anytime! (L-R): Bob Kriegel, Barbara Wade, Jim Oyler, Bob Kriegel, Steve Harp, and Ian & Susan McKinnon touring Dave Norfleet, Alan McMillian, Bob Sutton, Jim Oyler the west. Steve Harp, and Ian McKinnon Our planned rides include the following: Bob Sutton, ride leader, will schedule the July ride soon, possibly the 15th, and possibly northern Santa Rosa July: County with a lunch at Grover T’s in Milton. We will schedule a get together at PYC for a show and tell – with the McKinnons and their Colorado trip, Jim, Bob, and Steve and the Key West trip, and Bob and Steve with their point-to point – continguous and continental US trips! August: Weekday ride Wednesday the 15th, meet late afternoon at PYC and return early evening. Need a ride leader! September: Another weekday ride Wednesday the 12th, Steve Harp to coordinate. October: Thunder Beach Motorcycle Rally in Panama City for both a day ride (27th) and an overnighter! Jim Oyler will be the ride leader. November: Dave Norfleet will be the ride leader for a day ride for Saturday the 17th. We will plan on a distance ride up the Natchez Trace to the Rattlesnake Saloon in northern Alabama the weekend of November 10th. - or alternatively a ride to Apalachicola if the weather looks too wintery. Need a ride leader for this ride! December: Bob Kriegel will be the ride leader for the “Last Ride of the Year” to the Stagecoach Café in Stockton, Al. – most likely the 29th! Steve Harp, Bob Kriegel and Jim Oyler rode to Key West and back in June – and this was be the start of Steve’s SE to NW (Prudhoe Bay, Alaska) US ride, and Bob’s contiguous US ride! Bob accompanied Steve into Canada – Edmonton – before heading for Bellingham, in northwest Washington. Both joined up later to ride back spending time in southeast Utah. Ian and Susan McKinnon took their bikes to Telluride for the Telluride Music Festival in mid June. Then they joined up with the UnBound USA group to celebrate their twentieth anniversary riding the Colorado Rockies! Unbound USA (unboundusa.com) is a group of “wild hogs” who get together annually for a destination ride. (All of us!) You are invited to submit a favorite recipe from your travels. We will try to include one recipe each month. These can be recipes that you fell in love with, that reflected your trip, and perhaps even recipes that you obtained by “hook or by crook.” If you don’t have the exact recipe, make your best guess. It will be close, and may turn out even better!! We had a delicious recipe last month for Mexican Corn Etapes, submitted by Linda Oyler. We didn’t receive one for this month. Come on, now! Our readers are hungry! This new column is just in time for a summer season for cruising and chowing down! Send to Marcia Roberts: rsailer@aol.com.
