Two programs will launch this year to provide support to people facing systemic barriers to success; one in MOMO PRODUCTIONS the form of job training and the other Young woman working on desktop computer at home through funding. "The apprenticeships are a wonderful opportunity because many of our underserved community members are very talented and need an opportunity to be developed, up-skilled and trained," said VP and Executive Director of Miami Community Ventures Sheri Colas- Gervais. 7/13/2021 Miami-Dade Beacon council seeks company partners for Miami Community Ventures initiatives - South Florida Business Journal wage jobs to participants. The living wage in Miami-Dade county is defined at about $14 per hour, Colas-Gervais said. "Any employer that is interested in providing living-wage jobs and are committed not only to what it means for their business, but what it means for the community, are welcomed and can reach out," Colas-Gervais said. The apprenticeship would include classroom instruction and on- the-job training for participants for up to two years. All MCV participants are low-income residents, 85% of which reside in communities with poverty rates of at least 20%. Though MCV recruits potential candidates, employers make final hiring decisions. Colas-Gervais said the series has great potential for the business community. "It's a win-win because the employer has the opportunity to have a professionally designed and tailored apprenticeship that is state approved," she said. "It's not coming out of their pockets, just requires their commitment." MCV is set to launch its first apprenticeship for about 15 individuals at Miami's Bean Automotive Group, in partnership with Miami Dade College and CareerSource South Florida this month. Upon successful completion of the program, participants will take an exam to become certified automotive technician specialists. Colas-Gervais said MCV decided to focus its first iteration of the series on the auto industry because of the change it faces. "Going from combustible engines and gasoline to electric cars requires a totally different skill set," she said. "This results in a case of demand [for trained individuals] exceeding supply." Though open to any suggestion, Colas-Gervais said MCV is especially interested in partnering with employers from industries undergoing similar transitions. https://www.bizjournals.com/southflorida/news/2021/07/12/miami-community-ventures-initiatives.html?s=print 2/4
7/13/2021 Miami-Dade Beacon Council seeks company partners for Miami Community Ventures initiatives - South Florida Business Journal The apprenticeship program is just one initiative MCV has planned to increase the economic stability of the county. Its Small Business Entrepreneurship Track offers training to female- owned Black and LatinX early-stage businesses with annual revenue of less than $500,000 seeking coaching and mentorship to scale. Bank of America is the initiative's founding sponsor. "Small businesses are there and they need this," Colas-Gervais said. "It would bring value to them and to the community." Founded in 2019 by the Miami-Dade Beacon Council — the county's economic development partnership — MCV has raised $2 million to date and has placed over 80 people in jobs since October 2020, with average wages that exceed the living wage target. The unemployment rate in Miami-Dade County was 6.7% in May, exceeding the national unemployment rate of 5.8%, according to Federal Reserve economic data. "Through our initiatives, we are providing economic mobility and opportunity," Colas-Gervais said. "Together we are creating jobs for our underserved community members." 7/13/2021 White Sox catcher Grandal gives $25,000 to local travel team I Miami Herald Miami itralo BASEBALL MLB star Yasmani Grandal remembers South Florida roots with well-timed donation BY WALTER VILLA MIAMI HERALD WRITER JULY 05, 2021 11:34 AM f ► Listen to this article now 03:22 Powered by Trinity Aut ORDER REPRINT In 2011, when Yasmani Grandal met Heather — the woman who would become his wife — he told her he worked in construction. In reality, Grandal at that time was a top minor-league baseball prospect on his way to the majors after starring at Miami Springs High and the University of Miami. Grandal and Heather had been dating for one year — in Arizona, where she's from and where he was playing Triple A baseball — before he finally told her about his actual career. 7/13/2021 White Sox catcher Grandal gives $25,000 to local travel team I Miami Herald Grandal, a two-time All-Star catcher who now plays for the Chicago White Sox, has given his time and money to a lot of causes, Heather said, and he doesn't do it to seek publicity. Carlos Marti, the coach of the Miami-based Florida Legends travel team for players age 18 and under, recently received a $25,000 donation from Grandal. That money, Marti said, financed a trip to Joplin, Missouri, where the Legends on Sunday qualified for the 12-team Connie Mack World Series, which will be held July 23-31 in Farmington, New Mexico. "We're extremely grateful to Yas," Marti said. "He didn't even play for the Legends, but he hasn't forgotten his roots in Miami." Indeed, Grandal played for other youth-league teams like the Miami Stings, Miami Maniacs and Hialeah Heat. "His parents [Maria and Eliaser Grandal] still have those jerseys and pictures," Heather said. In other words, those early days in a player's career still carry impact For the Legends, this will be their 10th trip to the Connie Mack World Series and their fourth in a row. And although they have never won the Mack title, 19 former Legends players have made it to the major leagues, a list that includes Manny Machado, Anthony Rizzo, Albert Almora, Zack Collins, Andrew Suarez, Aramis Garcia, Peter O'Brien and Luke Jackson. Yet for all those stars, Grandal's donation is the biggest one ever received by the Legends from a baseball player. https://www.miamiherald.com/sports/m1b/article252579103.html 2/6
7/13/2021 White Sox catcher Grandal gives $25,000 to local travel team 1 Miami Herald That charitable spirit is typical Grandal, according to his agent, Michael Maulini. "Once every homestand in Chicago, Yas rents a suite and donates it to a low- income family so they can watch the White Sox in style," Maulini said. "Yas has always given back to the community. He just never let it become known publicly. That's not his character." Heather said she and Maulini were finally able to convince Grandal — who was not available to speak to the Herald for this story due to his busy baseball schedule — that it is OK to take an occasional bow. Among the causes Grandal supports is autism, working with a group called Arizona Helping Hands. Heather said Grandal loves visiting with autistic kids, and the feeling is mutual. Meanwhile, Adrian Morales, who went on to win two College World Series titles as South Carolina's starting third baseman, is now the head coach at Miami-Dade College. But in high school, he and Grandal were teammates at Miami Springs. "Yas donates catching and other gear to us at MDC and to about 10 to 15 Miami high schools," Morales said. "Even though he doesn't play for the Marlins, he is still active in the Miami community. "He now lives in Arizona and speaks with a heavy American accent. But, other than that, he hasn't changed. He's still that kid from Hialeah." cD COMMENTS v 0 Comments Sort by Oldest Add a comment... Facebook Comments Plugin https://www.miamiherald.com/sports/m1b/article252579103.html 3/6
7/13/2021 Down the Fairway: Glens Falls Country Club sees three hole-in-ones in one day !The Daily Gazette \ Tuesday, July 13,2021 THE DA I LY GAZETTE WHEN CREDIBILITY MATTERS Down the Fairway: Glens Falls Country Club sees three hole- in-ones in one day By Bob Weiner I July 10, 2021 Niskayuna High School grad Torn Haggerty has been head pro at Glens Falls CL for more than 40 years. (Photos provided) Share 1 I Fi4 In his more than 40 years as head pro at scenic Glens Falls Country Club, Rexford native and Niskayuna High School graduate Torn Haggerty figured he'd seen just about everything you can observe in his profession that often deals with strange bounces from a tiny white ball. But the Northeastern New York PGA Hall of Farner witnessed a rare event last month. https://dailygazette.com/2021/07/10/down-the-fairway-glens-falls-country-club-sees-three-hole-in-ones-in-one-day/ 1/11
7/13/2021 I Down the Fairway: Glens Falls Country Club sees three hole-in-ones in one day The Daily Gazette Ti DA I LY LQ Sr., and deceased brother, veteran Schenectady Municipal Golf Course head pro Bob Haggerty Jr., are also in the NENY PGA Hall of Fame, was happy to verify three holes-in-one at his course on the same day last month. The odds of any one player recording an ace are pretty steep. To witness three on the same layout on the same day is almost unbelievable. "Never in my memory have I seen or even heard of something happening like this," Haggerty said. "It's amazing. We have a hole-in-one deal at our club. If any male golfer records a hole-in-one, everyone, even if they don't play golf, gets a drink. That day, the bartender did quite well.' Stu Ginsberg started the parade of aces with a shot from 110 yards off the green tees on the third hole. He used a 9-iron, and the shot went in about 8:30 a.m. Then, it was Bob Huntz's turn, as he flew a hybrid 184 yards into the cup on the 12th hole around 2 p.m. Closing out the super shots was Joe Richardson, who hit an 8-iron on the third hole again, this time from the 142- yard white tees at about 4 p.m. "It's mind-boggling," Haggerty said. "The percentages are tremendous against anything like this ever happening. Some years, we have three holes- in-one all year. Then, sometimes we have 15 holes-in-one in one season. But three in one day is really something." The barrage of aces isn't the only thing keeping a smile on Haggerty's face. His course, designed by fame architect Donald Ross, has been ranked 86th in the country by GOLF magazine. "We've had so many accolades recently," Haggerty said, "We are very proud." Glens Falls CC, a private club located in Queensbury off of Round Pond Road, began as a nine-hole layout in 1912 and, expanded to 18 holes by 1921. It's known for its rolling hills, outstanding scenery, challenging approach shots https://dailygazette.com/2021/07/10/down-the-fairway-glens-falls-country-club-sees-three-hole-in-ones-in-one-day/ 2/11

The course has been host to some of the greatest players in the game, especially from 1929 to 1939, when it was the site for the Glens Falls Open. Such legendary players as Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, Gene Sarazen, Sam Snead and Walter Hagen competed at Glens Falls CC. Haggerty was asked why Glens Falls CC is so special. "First of all, we were lucky to be designed by one of the greatest architects in history in Donald Ross," Haggerty noted. "But the thing I think is great is that you can play here every day and not get sick of it. There aren't many flat lies, it's very a very picturesque course, and it's quite unique. We get calls all the time from people who to want to play here, but unfortunately, we can't accommodate outsiders unless they are invited by our members as guests. "Almost all of our local pros think this is the best course in the area. We have quite a reputation." Haggerty is one of the area's most experienced golf professionals. After graduating from Niskayuna in 1970, where he was the No. 1 player on the golf team that went to the state tournament, he attended Miami-Dade College for a year before serving as Al Stein Jr.'s assistant pro at Glens Falls CC for eight seasons. Haggerty earned his PGA membership in 1981 and took over the head pro duties from Stein that same year after Stein left to become part owner of a golf course. Among Haggerty's career highlights was serving on the NENY PGA's nominating committee, tournament committee and board of directors. He was named the winner of the Bill Strausbaugh Award for club relations and community service in 1988, was the Merchandiser of the Year for private clubs three times and was also the honorary captain for the pro team in the https://dailygazette.com/2021/07/10/down-the-fairway-glens-falls-country-club-sees-three-hole-in-ones-in-one-daY/ 3/11
